Book Synopsis The Mexico-U.S. Free Trade Agreement by : Peter M. Garber
Download or read book The Mexico-U.S. Free Trade Agreement written by Peter M. Garber and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seven contributions in this book examine the potential impact of a North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Mexico on the U.S. economy. They cover such key aspects as the general sources of comparative advantage between Mexico and the U.S., regional and local effects on production and employment, and the effect on production in particular industries. The authors start from the premise that the trade agreement will have a small impact on the overall U.S. gross national product because the U.S. economy is large compared to that of Mexico and because there is already much unrestricted trade between the two countries. Several chapters consider how some sources of comparative advantage that cut across industries differential environmental regulations and wage differentials - may affect the outcome. These are followed by chapters that assess the locational effects on U.S. production, either from the viewpoint of which metropolitan areas will gain employment or of the scale effects-transportation cost-tradeoff. Concluding chapters address the effect of the NAFTA on several individual U.S. sectors such as agriculture, automobiles, and financial services. Peter M. Garber is Professor of Economics at Brown University. Contents: Introduction, Peter M. Garber. Environmental Impacts of a North American Free Trade Agreement, Gene M. Grossman, Alan B. Krueger. Book excerpt: This work examines the responses of unions and workers to regional integration and restructuring in the automobile industry in North and Central America. Book Synopsis Developing Countries and World Trade by : Yılmaz Akyüz
Download or read book Developing Countries and World Trade written by Yılmaz Akyüz and published by Zed Books. This book was released on 2003-09 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased participation in world trade is conventionally seen as the key to economic growth and development. Yet, as this book shows through its detailed examination of world trade patterns over the last 20 years, while developing country exports have grown faster than the world average, the rich countries have meanwhile increased their share in world manufacturing valued added. This poses the vitally important policy challenge of what poor countries, confronted by the vigorous expansion of their foreign trade but no comparable rise in income, should do. Primary commodity prices have collapsed in value, and there is a real danger that the terms of trade for their exports of manufactured goods may do the same. The key challenge confronting poor countries today is not more trade liberalization on their part, but how to improve the terms of their participation in world trade and to increase the still limited and unstable benefits they derive from it.

Book Synopsis Multinationals and Foreign Investment in Economic Development by : E. Graham
Download or read book Multinationals and Foreign Investment in Economic Development written by E. Graham and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-04-28 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past twenty or so years, foreign direct investment (FDI) flows have increased at rates approaching the astounding, especially so during the 1990s. While much of the increase was due to unprecedented cross-border mergers and acquisitions among high-income countries, the amount of FDI flowing to developing nations also grew substantially. This volume examines the economics of this FDI to developing countries. Some chapters are theoretical in nature, others empirical, and still others are largely policy-oriented. Topics covered include whether FDI makes an autonomous contribution to growth in these nations and whether or not 'spillovers' are generated by this investments. Also covered are effects of policy intervention by governments on FDI flows and whether non-economic factors (e.g. cultural factors) might figure as determinants of location of FDI.

Book Synopsis Latin American Business by : Werner Baer
Download or read book Latin American Business written by Werner Baer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examine the costs and benefits of fiscal “wars” between Brazilian states Latin American Business examines Brazil’s use of fiscal incentives to attract investors to help remedy disparities in the country’s regional distribution of income. Since the 1990s, individual Brazilian states have taken the initiative in trying to lure domestic and foreign firms to locate within their borders, targeting the automotive industry, textiles, and shoe production. But their efforts have led to mixed results and questions about whether these fiscal wars have been legitimate attempts at regional economic development or simply a distortion in the allocation of resources. This insightful collection of case studies and essays sheds considerable light on the issue. For several generations, the notion has been debated both in advanced industrial countries and in developing countries that regional differences in income will gradually be eliminated as poor regions (where money is scare but labor is not) benefit from the inflow of investments. In reality, this has rarely happened; Latin American Business examines why that has been the case in Brazil. The book’s contributors fuel this continuing debate, analyzing topics that include Bahia’s efforts to attract a Ford plant, the Mercedes-Benz project in Juiz de Fora, the case of Renault in Paraná, fiscal incentive programs in Pernambuco, and the tax incentive policies of Ceará. Latin American Business includes: an evaluation of the costs and benefits of federal and state incentives given to Ford Motor Company to attract a plant in Bahia an analysis of the use of state and municipal incentives by the state of Minas Gerais in dealing with Mercedes-Benz Corporation a look at Paraná’s agreement with Renault and the degree to which it has created jobs and attracted other investments an examination of structural changes in the Brazilian automotive industry a look at the Brazilian automotive industry in the 1990s an evaluation of the results of Pernambo’s fiscal incentives program from 1996 to 2003 a discussion of the economic logic for tax incentives a look at the economic effects of regional tax incentives and much more Latin American Business is an essential resource for academics, business practitioners, public policymakers, and anyone working in the international development community.
Book Synopsis Free Trade in the Americas by : Sidney Weintraub
Download or read book Free Trade in the Americas written by Sidney Weintraub and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), an ambitious venture in regional market integration which builds on the principles of the North American Free Trade Agreement. It assesses the long-term corporate and public policy measures to cope with the increased monetary, fiscal and structural interdependence that will be required if the benefits of the FTAA are to be realized. The contributors suggest that with enlightened US leadership and the cooperation of Brazil, Mexico and Argentina, the FTAA could eventually match the EU in the world economy and as a multilateral leader. Initiatives to promote a culture of relational cooperation in a system of liberalized global commerce are stressed. In Latin America, there is an urgent need for such cooperation in order to enhance the region s lackluster growth rate and reduce the occurrences and severity of financial crises. The United States, Canada and Mexico will also benefit from the development of dynamic structural links with their regional neighbours. The authors highlight the importance for US policy initiatives to be complemented by constructive and harmonious corporate collaborations. This spirit of alliance capitalism will help ensure the FTAA promotes social justice as well as economic efficiency. This fully integrated volume, written by leading specialists in the field, will become an indispensable source for analysis of the prospects and role of the FTAA in the global economy. It will be warmly welcomed by informed readers such as international business experts, bankers, corporate executives, economists dealing with fiscal and monetary integration, and those interested in Latin American business.
