Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to determine the extent that computer-related factors affect the success of nontraditional college students. Since nontraditional students typically have fewer skills than traditionally-aged students, they may be less efficacious regarding their ability to use technology. Unfortunately, such reduced confidence may adversely affect the entire college experience for students, and ultimately, successful employment. The simple process of obtaining information on campus websites may be daunting enough; however, when students enter the classroom, they often find that course requirements include considerable amounts of computer use. Therefore, in addition to learning specific course content, nontraditional students must also learn how to operate computers and conduct Internet research. Such expectations may reduce the potential for college success. To conduct the research, surveys were administered to students attending two Midwestern community colleges. Using the resultant data, various analyses were conducted to examine interactions between computer-related variables and course grades and completion rates. Results indicated that high school access was the most significant factor in determining computer efficacy in college students. The second most successful method of obtaining confidence was found among students who used computers for work. Students employed with computers also enrolled in more online courses than students who were unemployed or who worked in non-technical positions. Additional factors that correlated to efficacy were high-bandwidth Internet access and the availability of computer-related devices. Although more nontraditional than traditional students withdrew from college classes in general, nontraditional students were not more likely to withdraw from computer literacy or online courses. Therefore, adult students seemed to compensate for their reduced proficiency by persisting in the classes necessary to improve skills. Computer efficacy appeared to be more critical than computer skills in online course enrollment. Students with greater confidence in their abilities enrolled in more online courses, even if their actual skills were lower than other students. Additional relationships between computer skills and efficacy and college success factors such as persistance and improved grades are also discussed.

Book excerpt: Little is known about student success in online learning environments, especially how the predisposing characteristics that the learner brings to the learning environment may differentially affect student outcomes. This study explored the question of whether a student's "readiness" to be a self-directed learner is a predictor of student success in an online community college curriculum. The specific goal of this investigation was to determine whether there was a significant relationship between self-directed learning readiness-as measured by Guglielmino's (1977) Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS)- and student success-as measured by course completion, grade point average (GPA) and student satisfaction, the latter assessed by student responses to an opinion poll. The subjects of this study were community college students in the state of Washington, enrolled in one or more transfer-level online courses delivered via WashingtonONLINE (WAOL) during fall quarter 1999. Students who voluntarily chose to respond to two elective surveys comprised the study sample. A correlational research design was used to test the explanatory power of self-directed learning readiness and to describe the relationships between variables. Since this study was designed to test hypothesized relationships, the resulting correlation coefficients were interpreted in terms of their statistical significance. The expected outcome of this study was to confirm or disconfirm a statistically significant relationship between self-directed learning readiness and student success in an online community college curriculum. The findings of this study failed to achieve this outcome due to (1) the lack of statistical reliability of the SDLRS among the subject population; (2) the resulting lack of validity of the SDLRS among the study sample; (3) a nonresponse effect; and (4) a self-selection effect. The unanticipated outcome of this study was evidence that student perception of student/instructor interactions is a single variable predictor of student success among community college students in an online learning environment. Recommendations for further study include Web-specific research methodologies that address the potentially deleterious effects of nonresponse and self-selection in cyber-research environments and continued exploration of the multiple facets of student success in asynchronous learning domains.

Book excerpt: This quantitative research study explored the relationship between students' perceived computer self-efficacy and actual knowledge of computer related skills in computer hardware/technology, windows, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and whether gender, race, and education level affected the research findings. The participants in this study were students enrolled in an introductory computer concepts course at a community college located in the southeastern region of the United States. The computer course was a requirement for all students to receive an Associate of Arts and Associate of Applied Science degree. Data was collected in traditional face-to-face class sections and consisted of a pre- and post-computer self-efficacy survey and a pre- and post-test skills assessment on three different campuses. The scores in the area of computer hardware/technology, windows, Word, Excel, and Power Point were compared to determine whether a relationship exists between Computer self-efficacy and actual knowledge in the area of computers. In addition to a series of a one-way Analysis of Variance, a Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance, and a Bivariate Correlation, the study also utilized descriptive analysis of demographic data and responses to a questionnaire regarding participants' prior technology experience and usage. Findings of the study indicated that students' computer self-efficacy was much greater than actual knowledge in the area of computers. Findings of the study did show no significant difference in computer self-efficacy concerning gender, race, and education. No significant differences were found in the education level and skill level of the participants at the beginning of the CSC 1113 course. A significant difference was found in skill level among the different races at the beginning of the CSC 1113 course with the exception of Power Point. The study did show that there was no significant difference in skill level for gender except in the area of technology. The study found a positive correlation in the numbers of computer courses students completed in high school to computer self-efficacy at the beginning of the semester in the course CSC 1113. At the completion of the course CSC 1113, Computer Concepts, computer self-efficacy scores were significantly higher. Findings also showed a significant increase in the skill levels, Windows, Word, Excel, and Power Point at the completion of the CSC 1113 course. The study had not shown significant difference in hardware/technology skills at the completion of the CSC 1113 course. --Page ii.

While the delivery method of the course (i.e., face-to-face or online) may vary, the content is similar in that the overall goal is to acclimate first-year students to the collegiate environment and assist them in becoming proficient in study skills, time management, planning for their career, and setting them on a trajectory to completing a degree or academic credential. With the increased interest in distance education and online learning, some colleges and universities are offering student success courses that were traditionally face to-face, in an online format as well. As these courses become more commonplace at two-year institutions, little research exists on the effectiveness of the delivery method for these courses, as well as whether delivery method used can aid the progression of a community college student to degree completion. This quantitative study examines delivery methods of a student success course at a two-year institution and its impact on student academic performance and persistence towards a subsequent semester of coursework while controlling for various demographic variables. Subjects took the success course in either their first academic semester or first academic year at the selected institution during the fall 2014 and fall 2016 terms for both face-to-face and online delivery methods. Research focused on the impact of student success course modality on current semester outcomes (proximal) and subsequent semester outcome (distal). Proximal results indicated that female, non-traditional aged students who received a passing score on the computer placement exam, took the course face-to-face in their first semester, classified as White/Non-Hispanic, and were Non-Pell eligible were more likely to complete as many semester credit hours as they attempted and receive a grade of A in the course. Distal results indicated that male, non-traditional aged students who received a passing score on the computer placement exam, took the course by a full-time instructor and were Non-Pell eligible were more likely to complete as many subsequent semester credit hours as they attempted. The three variables that consistently impacted the outcomes were Age, Pell/Non-Pell, and Computer Placement Score for both proximal and distal outcomes. Results of the variable Pell/Non-Pell were the most pervasive findings across all research questions. In this study, those who were Pell eligible were less successful in the current semester of taking the success course and in the subsequent semester after the success course was taken compared to those who were Non-Pell eligible.

Book excerpt: Technology usage is increasing important for community college students, but whether nontraditional students differ from traditional students in technology usage and support was unclear. Further, it was not known whether Nontraditional and Traditional community college students feel equally connected to the college when using social networking software for school purposes. A large percentage of students attending community colleges have characteristics that may negatively influence their persistence in college. These at-risk characteristics include receiving a ged (General Education Development test) or not completing high school, delaying postsecondary enrollment, being financially independent of one's parents, being a single parent, having dependents other than a spouse, attending college part-time, and working full-time. Students who possess one or more of these characteristics are categorized as nontraditional students. However, nontraditional students cannot be lumped into one grouping. Using Horn's nontraditional definition, students are considered minimally nontraditional if they have one characteristic, moderate if they have two to three, and highly nontraditional if they have four or more. The more at-risk characteristics a student has, the less likely they will persist in college. Retention activities geared toward nontraditional students is extremely challenging. Emerging technologies in the form of social networking and course management tools may be a means to engage nontraditional students that are preoccupied with preexisting obligations and time constraints. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether traditional and nontraditional students use social networking and course management tools differently and explored group differences in student-faculty interaction and support for learners within the context of emerging technology usage. This study utilized the 2009 California subset of Community College Survey of Student Engagement (ccsse) and technology supplemental. Twelve Californian community colleges participated in the survey, totaling 9712 respondents. Data were analyzed with anova to contrast traditional and nontraditional groups, and using simple correlation to determine the relationship between technology use and both student-faculty interaction and support for learners. Differences and relationships were considered statistically significant at a threshold of p less than 0.05. The findings suggest that emerging technology usage differed between traditional and nontraditional students, such that highly nontraditional students use technology less overall and less for classroom use. Traditional students use course management significantly less than nontraditional students. Moreover, technology use was inversely related with student-faculty interaction, such that the higher the technology usage, the lower the student-faculty interaction. This pattern was evident across traditional and nontraditional student categories. Additionally, technology use was inversely related with support for learners, such that the higher the technology usage, the lower the student support. This pattern was evident across traditional and nontraditional student categories. Lastly, exploratory analyses suggest that when connected via social networking, traditional and nontraditional groups feel equally connected. Combined these findings suggest that emerging technologies in the form of social networking and course management tools may be a form of engagement that community colleges can utilize in the retention of nontraditional students. Book excerpt: The predominant use of lecturing in introductory STEM classrooms-which perpetuates a stressful, competitive, and unsupportive learning environment-has been identified as one of the primary causes of diminished student motivation and interest, eventually leading to exit from these fields. These effects are exacerbated among women and students of color, who are traditionally underrepresented and underserved in STEM fields. Active learning has been linked to positive cognitive, motivational, and academic outcomes among students at 4-year institutions. However, empirical work examining its application in 2-year colleges is limited. This study investigated the relationship between active learning and community college students' long-term academic success in STEM. To understand how active learning impacts success in STEM, a conceptual framework was created depicting the direct and indirect links between active learning, self-efficacy beliefs in math and science, and academic outcome measures, accounting for student person inputs and contextual factors. Applying structural equation modeling techniques on a longitudinal dataset collected over a period of four years, the study uncovered an underlying mechanism through which active learning contributes to community college students' long-term academic outcomes in STEM. The study revealed the positive but indirect link between active learning and STEM success through the mediating effects of self-efficacy beliefs. The identification of self-efficacy beliefs in math and science as powerful mediating mechanisms highlights the prominent role motivational beliefs play in STEM success and pinpoints active learning as a potentially effective pedagogical approach for stimulating the development of these beliefs. Results of the multiple-group structural equation modeling analyses indicated that the modeled relationships are invariant across gender and racial/ethnic groups. Findings of this study may thus provide insights for policy development and shed light on directions for future research.
