Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Human Machine and Industrial Efficiency Most of the substance of this little book constituted the two Cutter Lectures on Preventive Medicine and Hygiene, which were given at the Harvard Medical School, April 25 and 26, 1918, under the title "Industrial Efficiency and the War." Many of the facts here presented relate to war industries, but they are none the less pertinent as illustrating the principles enunciated; and even if interest in the facts dies out, the principles, it is hoped, will survive and receive attention long after the war has ended. I believe fully that any activity in which the human body plays so large a part as it does in industry must be organized on a physiological basis before the highest degree of efficiency can be secured. In the field of human activity here discussed a science of industrial physiology must come into being, a science of the human machine in industry, and this must be developed largely within industrial establishments themselves. They constitute the laboratories in which much of the observation and experiment of the future must be made. Book excerpt: Winner, Association of American Publishers' Professional and Scholarly Publishing Award in Business, Management and Accounting In the late nineteenth century, corporate managers began to rely on photography for everything from motion studies to employee selection to advertising. This practice gave rise to many features of modern industry familiar to us today: consulting, "scientific" approaches to business practice, illustrated advertising, and the use of applied psychology. In this imaginative study, Elspeth H. Brown examines the intersection of photography as a mass technology with corporate concerns about efficiency in the Progressive period. Discussing, among others, the work of Frederick W. Taylor, Eadweard Muybridge, Frank Gilbreth, and Lewis Hine, Brown explores this intersection through a variety of examples, including racial discrimination in hiring, the problem of photographic realism, and the gendered assumptions at work in the origins of modern marketing. She concludes that the goal uniting the various forms and applications of photographic production in that era was the increased rationalization of the modern economy through a set of interlocking managerial innovations, technologies that sought to redesign not only industrial production but the modern subject as well.

Book excerpt: Will the workplace of the future be overrun by machines and robots? Are the new frontiers of artificial intelligence (AI) on the cusp of dethroning us in efficiency, intelligence and innovative potential? Automation and AI will augment our human world and potential. The winners of the future of work are those that harness the power of machines to their advantage. Human/Machine is the only guide you need to understand the fourth industrial revolution. It sets out a road map to the challenges ahead, but also unlocks the wondrous opportunities that it offers. Human/Machine explores how we will work symbiotically with machines, detailing how institutions, companies, individuals and education providers will evolve to integrate seamlessly with new technologies. With exclusive case studies, this book offers a glimpse into the future and details how top companies are already thriving on this very special relationship. From gamification in job training to project management teams integrated with bots and predictive technologies that fix problems in the supply chain before they happen, the authors deliver a powerful manifesto for the adoption and celebration of automation and AI. In a much more fluid, skills-based economy, we will all need to prove our worth and future-proof our skills base. This book offers a blueprint to avoid being left behind and unearth the opportunities unique to human-machine partnership ecosystems.
