Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Midland Railway, Its Rise and Progress: A Narrative of Modern Enterprise The last fifty years have witnessed a mighty and beneficent revolution in the Midlands of England. A few men of enterprise have led others on to a work which has revived trade, created new industries, enriched at once the landlord and the peasant, the manufacturer and the merchant, and promoted the happiness and well-being of the nation. And in this service the Midland Railway has been especially concerned. When the Author inquired for the beginning of the history of the Midland Railway - when he tried to find the source of the highest tributary stream of events - his friends of the Midland Railway Company were unable to help him. The oldest official records were searched in vain. Sir James Allport, then the General Manager, and Mr. E. S. Ellis, the Chairman, could tell much; but they could not say where the Midland Counties Railway, the first of the three lines that eventually were amalgamated to form the Midland Company, had its initiation. Fortunately the required clue was, unexpectedly, discovered. One day, riding in a train with Mr. Robert Harrison, of Eastwood, near Nottingham, that gentleman suggested to the Author that in the private books of his firm - Messrs. Barber, Walker and Co., - some facts bearing on the subject might perhaps be ascertained. He would have them searched. Book Synopsis The Early History of Railway Tunnels by : Hubert Pragnell
Download or read book The Early History of Railway Tunnels written by Hubert Pragnell and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2024-08-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the early railway traveller, the prospect of travelling to places in hours rather than days hitherto was an inviting prospect, however a journey was not without its fears as well as excitement. To some, the prospect of travelling through a tunnel without carriage lighting, with smoke permeating the compartment and the confined noise was a horror of the new age. What might happen if we broke down or crashed into another train in the darkness? To others it was exciting, with the light from the footplate flickering against the tunnel walls or spotting the occasional glimpses of light from a ventilation shaft. To the directors of early railway companies, planning a route was governed by expense and the most direct way. Avoiding hills could add miles but tunnelling through them could involve vast expense as the Great Western Railway found at Box and the London and Birmingham at Kilsby. Creating a cutting as an alternative was also costly not only in labour and time, but also in compensation for landowners, who opposed railways on visual and social grounds having seen their land divided by canals. Construction involved millions of bricks or blocks of stone for sufficiently thick walls to withstand collapse. However, the entrance barely seen from the carriage window might be an impressive Italianate arch as at Primrose Hill, or a castellated portal worthy of the Middle Ages as at Bramhope. This book sets out to tell the story of tunnelling in Britain up to about 1870, when it was a question of burrowing through earth and rock with spade and explosive powder, with the constant danger of collapse or flooding leading to injury and death. It uses contemporary accounts, from the dangers of railway travel by Dickens to the excitement of being drawn through the Liverpool Wapping Tunnel by the young composer Mendelssoln. It includes descriptions from early railway company guide books, newspapers and diaries. It also includes numerous photographs and colored architectural elevations from railway archives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homes on the Midland for New York Business Men: A Description of the Region Traversed by the New Jersey Division of the New York Midland Railway, Between New York City and Ellenville, Ulster Co;, N. Y The recent completion of the New Jersey Division of the New York Midland Railway, bringing within easy distance of the Metropolis many thriving towns and villages, hitherto comparatively remote, and rendering eligible, as convenient places of residence for New York business men, numerous picturesque and healthful localities, previously accessible only by stage or wagon, has made desirable the publication of a world of this character, with a view to placing before the thousands of tired city toilers, a clear, plain statement of the facilities and advantages offered to purchasers of homes in the fertile and rapidly growing region thus newly opened to direct railway communication, the careful reader will especially remark in his imaginary journey over the the, the tendency to a rapid yet healthful development in most of the places treated of. With the railroad has come an infusion of new enterprises, new projects, new life. Manufactures, churches, school-houses, hotels, and scores of tasteful residences are springing up; new settlements are cleared, surveyed, graded and put upon the market, only to find ready buyers; travel steadily increases, and lo we have another great outlet from the dust, and brick and stone of the crowded city to the green fields and pure air of the suburbs.
