Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do ancient historians pursue their craft? From the evidence of coins, pottery shards, remains of buildings, works of art, and, above all, literary texts--all of which have survived more or less accidentally from antiquity--they fashion works of history. But how exactly do they go about reconstructing and representing the past? How should history be written? These and related questions are the subject of Neville Morley's engaging introduction to the theory and philosophy of history. Intended for students and teachers not only of ancient history but of historiography, the philosophy of history, and classics, his book addresses the implications of debates over methodological and theoretical issues for the practice of ancient history. At the present time, Morley says, students of ancient history are left to come to their own understanding of the field through a process of trial and error. In his view, too many professors regard "questions of theory and methodology... as pointless distractions from the business of actually doing history. Worse, [these questions] may even be perceived as a threat to the subject." Asserting that more attention must be given to fundamental matters, Morley considers such topics as the nature of historical narrative, style in historical writing, the use and abuse of sources, and the reasons for studying history.

Book excerpt: The definitive guide to the world of contemporary and electronic music by the media's top music pundit 'An exhilarating history of pop - a brilliant and joyous book' Guardian 'A passionate, irresistible encouragement to listen more, and to listen better' Sunday Times Has pop burnt itself out? Inspired by the video for Kylie Minogue's hit single 'Can't Get You Out of My Head', acclaimed rock journalist Paul Morley is driving with Kylie towards a virtual city built of sound and ideas in search of the answer. Their journey bridges the various paradoxes of twentieth-century culture, as they encounter a succession of celebrities and geniuses - including Madonna, Kraftwerk, Wittgenstein and the ghost of Elvis Presley - and explore the iconic and the obscure, the mechanical and the digital, the avant-garde and the very nature of pop itself.

Book excerpt: ‘Fascinating...I’ll never look at a rose in quite the same way again.’ Adrian Tinniswood The rose is bursting with meaning. Over the centuries it has come to represent love and sensuality, deceit, death and the mystical unknown. Today the rose enjoys unrivalled popularity across the globe, ever present at life’s seminal moments. Grown in the Middle East two thousand years ago for its pleasing scent and medicinal properties, it has become one of the most adored flowers across cultures, no longer selected by nature, but by us. The rose is well-versed at enchanting human hearts. From Shakespeare’s sonnets to Bulgaria’s Rose Valley to the thriving rose trade in Africa and the Far East, via museums, high fashion, Victorian England and Belle Epoque France, we meet an astonishing array of species and hybrids of remarkably different provenance. This is the story of a hardy, thorny flower and how, by beauty and charm, it came to seduce the world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Morley, in the West Riding of Yorkshire: Including a Particular Account of Its Old ChapelDunstan having, therefore, at least, six himdred acres of land, in Morley, and Ilbert, about other six hundred, in waste; and there being a wood of about a mile in length and breadth, or 640 acres of forest, we are enabled to compare the present, with what was, near 800 years ago, considered the extent of the Township; and taking the above, not as admeasurement, but a very rude estimate as to wood and waste, we find it, by some means, considerably enlarged; for, we have now about acres within the Township, including our new Inclosures and waste.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morley: Ancient and Modern The volume herewith presented to the reader is a sequel or companion to the two previous works of the author, on the history of his native town. The "Rambles about Morley," and "The History and Antiquities of Morley," published respectively in 1866 and 1876, have distinctive features of their own; and it is hoped that this History (written in 1886) will be found to possess a freshness which will insure for it a welcome perusal, not only by those who have read the previous volumes, but also by others who would like to have a description, in greater detail, of village life in the West Riding of Yorkshire, in the early years of the present century. It would be an act of presumption on my part to send forth this volume, were I unable to record anything further regarding our ancient town than already appears in print; but in gathering material for this work, I have found much new and valuable matter, which adds to our previous knowledge respecting the place and people in bygone days. Our town has not been "at a standstill" during the last one hundred years. Indeed, if some Morley Rip Van Winkle were just emerging, not from a twenty years' but a century's sleep, and were to seek his old haunts, he would miss nearly all the ancient landmarks; would find that the old buildings, which in his day were the homes of his neighbours, had been all swept away; and would enquire, all but in vain, for the descendants of his former friends and acquaintances. Book excerpt: 'The book should be an interesting read for advanced students within the field and for experts working in it.'Contemporary PhysicsIn 1887, Michelson and Morley tried to observe in laboratory the 'ether drift' by measuring a small difference in the velocity of two perpendicular light beams. The result of their measurements, however, was much smaller than the classical prediction and interpreted as a 'null result'. This was crucial to stimulate the first pioneering formulations of relativity and, as such, it represents a fundamental step in the history of science. Since then, many repetitions of that original experiment have been performed with better and better sensitivity and the standard conclusion has been always the same: no genuine ether drift has ever been detected. However, in the authors' new scheme, the small irregular residuals observed in laboratory show surprising correlations with the direct observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) with satellites in space. This opens the possibility of finally linking the CMB to a fundamental reference frame for relativity, with substantial implications for the interpretation of non-locality in the quantum theory. The importance of the issue would require new dedicated experimental tests and significant improvements in the data analysis. Otherwise, without such more stringent checks, these crucial experiments will remain forever as an enigma for physics and the history of science. The book illustrates the many facets of this research together with historical accounts on some leading scientists involved in these measurements.

Book excerpt: Ever since the age of seven, old enough to form an identity but too young to be aware that 'southern' was a category, Paul Morley has always thought of himself as a northerner. What that meant, he wasn't entirely sure. But he wondered why, when as a child he was so ready to abandon his Cheshire roots and support the much more successful Lancashire cricket team, and when as an adult he found he could travel between London and Manchester in less than two hours, he continued to say he was from the north.
