Book Synopsis Winterson Narrating Time and Space by : Mine Özyurt Kılıç
Download or read book Winterson Narrating Time and Space written by Mine Özyurt Kılıç and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-27 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, scholars, students and aficionados of Jeanette Winterson will find ten analyses of time, space and narrative in her works. From her very first novel, Jeanette Winterson has made her characters move in time and in space, and she has always shown a sophisticated interest in narrative forms, and this is the first book to focus entirely on these central concerns. The writers of the essays provide different perspectives on the three subjects, from postmodernism to quantum physics, queer theory to genre studies and the uncanny to stylistics. In its section on time and narrative, the volume offers a fresh approach to Winterson's works, with a concentration on autobiographical elements, love, desire, the language of quantum physics, and the queer uncanny. The next section, space and narrative, pursues the motifs of journeys, utopic spaces, cyberspace and labyrinths, and includes a chapter on the shorter fiction. The last section, which comprises essays that cover all three elements of time, space and narrative equally, examines these themes as they affect Winterson's representation of voices and corporeality, and her use of romance narrative in the children's fiction. The volume covers Winterson's major fiction, with the Introduction connecting the images of huts, rivers and fire-gazing that are found extensively in her works to the themes of time and space, and bringing the discussion up to Winterson's latest novel, The Stone Gods. A mixture of established and new scholars presents in this book an exciting array of the latest ideas on this respected and popular writer.
Book Synopsis Short Stories From The Library of Wayne King Livingston by : Wayne King Livingston
Download or read book Short Stories From The Library of Wayne King Livingston written by Wayne King Livingston and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-06-10 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories you are about to read are from traveling and a culmination from eight years of my wife and I living among the people in lands of rich stories, not excluding Ireland. It has given me great joy to write of our adventures in a format that takes the best of times, stirred with some pathos of fallen friends and then mixed into the tales within! These reminiscences will be treasured by my wife Pat and I - forever! No one character is represented in his or her entirety and no narrative can be said to be an actual event. These storied chapters herein, capture our lives as it might have happened. I have pasted the wonderful characters together from all the many vignettes we encompassed while dwelling amongst one of the most reflective societies today. Not reflective in some lofty sense, but as in a mirror of life that needs the rich loamy land and vibrant countryside to place one’s heart into. Ireland, with not much doubt, is the last and most beautiful, virginal country left today. Thanks to flying, there are many corners and stories on this earth that I have seen and wrote about of great exotic beauty and depth, but the endowments of pastoral Ireland leave one breathless. It’s soft and natural charm is the result of native Irishmen resisting the huge industrial revolution that has changed lives within the short span of our diminutive existences. The Emerald Isle is a refuge from the unbridled growth of material things. Time will undoubtedly take this last resort, but there are those of us who have advantaged ourselves with an affair of the heart - a sojourn with Ireland! The Author
Book Synopsis Security, Governance, and State Fragility in South Africa by : Edward L. Mienie
Download or read book Security, Governance, and State Fragility in South Africa written by Edward L. Mienie and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2020-03-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do existing measures of state fragility measure fragility accurately? Based on commonly used fragility measures, South Africa (SA) is classified as a relatively stable state, yet rising violent crime, high unemployment, endemic poverty, eroding public trust, identity group based preferential treatment policies, and the rapid rise of the private security sector are all indications that SA may be suffering from latent state fragility. Based on a comprehensive view of security, this study examines the extent to which measures of political legitimacy and good governance, effectiveness in the security system – especially with respect to the police system – and mounting economic challenges may be undermining the stability of SA in ways undetected by commonly used measures of state fragility. Using a mixed-methods approach based on quantitative secondary data analysis and semi-structured interviews with government officials, security practitioners, and leading experts in the field, this study finds that the combination of colonization, apartheid, liberation struggle, transition from autocracy to democracy, high levels of direct and structural violence, stagnating social, political, and economic developments make South Africa a latently fragile state. Conceptually, the results of this research call into question the validity of commonly used measures of state fragility and suggest the need for a more comprehensive approach to assessing state fragility. Practically, this study offers a number of concrete policy recommendations for how South Africa may address mounting levels of latent state fragility.
