Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Governors Letter-Books, 1818-1834, Vol. 1 The Illinois State Historical Library presents in this volume the first of a new series which will be devoted to the manuscript material illustrating the office of the chief executive of the state. The letter-books here printed are in the office of the secretary of state at Springfield. The rule in printing has been to reproduce faithfully the copies as they were written, as far as the printed page can do so. There has been no attempt, therefore, to correct the spelling or punctuation of the original. In cases of doubt, however, the correct form has been chosen. One important change has been made. The letters were copied in the letter-book as opportunity and fancy dictated, so that order was entirely lacking and in many cases letters were copied twice. We have rearranged the material in chronological order, except in the case of enclosures, and have omitted the second copies, all the more important changes of this character being noticed in the foot notes; and we believe that this will make the volume more useful to students. In closing we wish to make our acknowledgments to Secretary James A. Rose for the courtesies he has extended to us and our assistants, and to Mrs. Jessie Palmer Weber for furnishing the copies of the portraits hat illustrate the volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Correspondence of Jonathan Worth, Vol. 1 In 1845 a convention of delegates from the counties composing his congressional district nominated him for Congress. He accepted the nomination, entered the field and was beaten by his competitor, Gen. Alfred Dockery. In these words Jonathan Worth described a part of his life when asked to do so by his friend, John H. Wheeler. He never finished it. The fragment is interesting as his own words, but, apart from the fact that only a portion of his life is covered, it is inadequate as a description of a well-rounded life as full of success and honor as that of the subject of this sketch. The Worths came to North Carolina from Nantucket. They were nearly all Quakers. The family was characterized by the qualities of industry, thrift, devotion to principle and the fear of God. Cense quently they were successful, not only in a material way, but also in obtaining the confidence, respect and admiration, if not the liking, of all those with whom they came in contact. They were men of too firm a mould, were too given to forming their own opinions and then living up to them, instead of accepting them ready made, to he liked by all. Like all strong men they had enemies, but none who could say anything to their discredit. It was of this stock that Jonathan Worth was sprung, and of which he was a fair and representative type. His father, Dr. David Worth, was a physician of reputation in his section. His mother was Eunice Gardner, of Guilford county. He was the eldest of twelve children, nine of whom lived to old age. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to Washington and Accompanying Papers, Vol. 1: 1752-1756 A complete edition of the writings to Washington, given verbatim et literatim from the original letters as received and indorsed by him, supplies not only the sequel to his own writings, but possesses an independent value in exhibiting fully the opinions, designs, and acts of those who were associated with him, and furnishes original facts of history not to be obtained from other sources. The manuscript collection was acquired from George Corbin Washington by purchase under the Acts of Congress approved June 30, 1834, and March 3, 1849, and deposited in the Department of State, Washington, D. C. This, the colonial or ante-revolutionary series, consists almost exclusively of correspondence and papers hitherto unprinted. It begins with the first manuscript in the collection of the "Letters to Washington," and ends with the date of his arrival at Cambridge, July 2, 1775, when he took command of the armies of the United Colonies: that is to say, to the period that has been partially covered by Sparks's correspondence of the American Revolution. The prosecution of this work has received encouragement from many. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.
