It has survived the shocks of eighteen centuries, and now it sways more human hearts than ever. In our own time controversies have broken over it like fierce summer atoms, which only brighten and enrich the face of the landscape they threaten to ruin. For a little while the theory of evolution was confidently affirmed to have shaken a strong ground for our belief in the Bible; it was soon made clear that it had only strengthened it. For fifty years unsparing criticism played upon the historical Christ it only brought him nearer and made his glory more visible to men. Hostile investigation has contributed to our knowledge of the New Testament and has left its credit and authority unimpaired, and now the Old Testament is passing through the same fire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in All Lands, 1894 Persecution is compulsory attempts by a party in a nation to compel other parties to adopt their con victions, in which legitimate persuasion and the exercise of reason are given, and compulsion, bribery, or some other illegitimate methods of the same sort is employed. But persecution is a horrible thing when the government of a country in icts all kinds of tortures short of death itself to compel those who differ from them to believe what they do not believe and see what they do not see. This iaa kind of persecution which happily now is hardly found except in Russia. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Presbyterians have a house of worship, but they do not sustain a regular service. It was reported that they were about to begin their work anew. Earth's fields the reapers wait, And low much golden grain is bending now So low that fallen, soiled, and stained it lies Because no hand has gleaned The harvests ripe Invite thy love, thy prayer, thy toil. Before Thine eye and near thine hand the burdened plains Are spread. Thy zeal for souls, thine earnest zeal He asks, who loved and lived and bled and died Salvation to secure for thee and thine. The cost, so great. He freely paid; endured 83101117, war! 5t0rg The cross; despised the shame: so deep the joy He found in pain and travail of his soul For sons of men - for thee! And now he looks To thee, and with a voice so tender, sweet With truest love. He bids thee enter now The Opened gates to gather sheaves for him. Blood-purchased are these waiting fields and sealed His own with all the weight of crushing shame He bore for thee and them. For this purpose we have opened a library containing a goodly number of Bulgarian and Russian books. All books pre sented to our library will be gratefully received and acknowledged. Deeply realizing the need of similar societies in other towns, we would recommend that our brethren organize such societies, as far as possible, in every town, for we believe the best way to counteract Me Protestant propaganda is to have educated priests. Book excerpt: The classic Harmony of the Gospels by J. W. McGarvey and Philip Y. Pendleton with interspersed comments. Attractively re-typeset, this enduring work is a valuable resource to modern Bible students. "In most commentaries a fifth or sixth of the space is taken up in drawing distinctions between the texts of the four Gospels, while in this work these distinctions are placed before the reader's eye, where he can see them for himself at a glance. Moreover, in other commentaries, which give the text, another sixth or seventh of the work is taken up in reprinting in the notes that portion of the text concerning which the commentator wishes to speak. Our interjected method avoids all this needless repetition, and makes it possible for us to present the comment with the least preliminary verbiage or introductory setting. Time is also saved because the reader does not have to look back and forth from the text at the top to the comment at the bottom of the page. Again, other commentaries lose a large amount of space by using the King James text. Those which preceded the revision waste space correcting the translation and modernizing its English: those published since the revision suffer a similar waste by drawing endless comparisons between the two texts. By choosing the American revision as the basis for our work, we have a text which needs but little explanation or apology, and we are thereby enabled to employ the reader's time and strength to his best advantage." --Excerpted from the Introduction

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this dictionary is to give an account of everything that relates to Christ - His Person, Life, Work, and Teaching. It is in a sense complementary to the Dictionary of the Bible, in which, of course, Christ has a great place. But a dictionary of the Bible, being occupied mainly with things biographical, historical, geographical, or antiquarian, does not give attention to the things of Christ sufficient for the needs of the preacher, to whom Christ is everything. This is, first of all, a preacher's dictionary. The authors of the articles have been carefully chosen from among those scholars who are, or have been, themselves preachers. And even when the articles have the same titles as articles in the Dictionary of the Bible, they are written by new men, and from a new standpoint. It is thus a work which is quite distinct from, and altogether independent of, the Dictionary of the Bible. It is called a Dictionary of Christ and the Gospels, because it includes everything that the Gospels contain, whether directly related to Christ or not. Its range, however, is far greater than that of the Gospels. It seeks to cover all that relates to Christ throughout the Bible and in the life and literature of the world. There will be articles on the Patristic estimate of Jesus, the Medieval estimate, the Reformation and Modern estimates. There will be articles on Christ in the Jewish writings and in the Muslim literature. Much attention has been given to modern thought, whether Christian or anti-Christian. Every aspect of modern life, in so far as it touches or is touched by Christ, is described under its proper title. James Hastings (1852-1922) was a distinguished scholar and pastor. He was founder and editor of the Expository Times and is also well known for editing the five-volume Dictionary of the Bible, as well as the Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics, the Dictionary of Christ and the Gospels, and the Dictionary of the Apostolic Church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the 99% occupied Wall Street... Before the concept of social justice had impinged on the social conscience... Before the social safety net had even been conceived... By the turn of the 20th Century, the era of the robber barons, Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) had already accumulated a staggeringly large fortune; he was one of the wealthiest people on the globe. He guaranteed his position as one of the wealthiest men ever when he sold his steel business to create the United States Steel Corporation. Following that sale, he spent his last 18 years, he gave away nearly 90% of his fortune to charities, foundations, and universities. His charitable efforts actually started far earlier. At the age of 33, he wrote a memo to himself, noting ..".The amassing of wealth is one of the worse species of idolatry. No idol more debasing than the worship of money." In 1881, he gave a library to his hometown of Dunfermline, Scotland. In 1889, he spelled out his belief that the rich should use their wealth to help enrich society, in an article called "The Gospel of Wealth" this book. Carnegie writes that the best way of dealing with wealth inequality is for the wealthy to redistribute their surplus means in a responsible and thoughtful manner, arguing that surplus wealth produces the greatest net benefit to society when it is administered carefully by the wealthy. He also argues against extravagance, irresponsible spending, or self-indulgence, instead promoting the administration of capital during one's lifetime toward the cause of reducing the stratification between the rich and poor. Though written more than a century ago, Carnegie's words still ring true today, urging a better, more equitable world through greater social consciousness.

Book excerpt: I have heard of a land Where the imagination has no fences Where what is dreamed one night Is accomplished the next day/FONT In the late 1880s, signs went up all around America - land was free in the Oklahoma territory. And it was free to everyone: Whites, Blacks, men and women alike. All one needed to stake a claim was hope and courage, strength and perseverance. Thousands of pioneers, many of them African-Americans newly freed from slavery, headed west to carve out a new life in the Oklahoma soil. Drawing upon her own family history, National Book Award winner Joyce Carol Thomas has crafted an unforgettable anthem to these brave and determned people from America's past. Richly illustrated by Coretta Scott King Award honoree Floyd Cooper, I Have Heard of a Land is a glorious tribute to the Afrian-American pioneer spirit. 00-01 Sequoyah Children's Book Award Masterlist
