Book excerpt: Mollusc species currently constitute a major threat to sustainable agriculture. This threat is associated with cultivation of new crops, intensification of agricultural production systems and the spread through human trade and travel of species adapted to these modified environments. In some crops their significance is only now becoming apparent with the decline in the importance of other pest groups which can be effectively controlled. The book focuses on: toxicology of chemicals; deployment of molluscicides in baits; specific crop situations worldwide; current pest status of mollusc species and progress towards development of solutions.

Book excerpt: A comic tale written in verse which shows that more than good intentions are needed to succeed. Giant African Land Snails have invaded the tiny island of Bim. Ras Spear, farmer from Fairy Vale is at his wits end trying to cope with the invasion. A neighbour gives him advice. The young farmer follows this advice and imagines being hailed as a hero but finds himself in hot water instead. Set in the Caribbean the illustrations are colourful and detailed. Read Together: Ages 4 - 6; Read Alone: Ages 6 - 9.In this book Stoute combines a comic tale with information on the Giant African Land Snail. Her goal is to encourage children to be aware of the world around them. Although the first half of the books is fictional, she weaves many topical subjects into the story like fish migration and foods enjoyed by specific nations; she offers many topics which promote discussion long after the text has been read. Silva-Freimane's illustrations are detailed and authentically depict the plants, animals and landscapes of the Caribbean. She creates synergy by using emotionally expressive cartoon type characters to amplify the comic effect.Author Biography: Author, June Stoute was born and educated in Barbados. She has also lived in Curacao, St. Lucia, USA and the UK. She worked for twenty years in the toy industry. This and raising two children kindled an avid interest in education and child development. Stoute's poetry, short stories and picture books have won several awards in the Barbados National Independence Festival of Creative Arts, Barbados. Her interests are eclectic but her primary focus is family and social issues. Stoute's daughter, Jehanne Silva-Freimane, is the illustrator. A self-taught artist, Silva-Freimane, holds a BSc from the University of the West Indies and an MBA from the University of Leeds. She is also creator of an e-commerce art site, Just Some Lines. She resides in Europe with her husband and two young children. The first edition of this book (now out of print)received Silver Awards in the National Independence Festival - Barbados in two categories - poetry and book.

It's a big wide world, full of critters that are larger than life! Sure, there are the usual suspects: blue whales, polar bears, elephant seals . . . but others will take you by surprise. The giant snail, for instance, or the ginormous Atlas moth. Like Pink Is for Blobfish and Cute as an Axolotl, Big as a Giant Snail will cover a wide variety of species, while subtly delving into misconceptions and stereotypes associated with size. Best of all? These tall tales are totally true! "Awe-inspiring... This work fits into so many lessons, from endangered species to climate change and habitat preservation, that it’s hard to imagine a collection that would not benefit from having it on its shelves." —School Library Journal

Book excerpt: This new volume on Biological Invasions deals with both plants and animals, differing from previous books by extending from the level of individual species to an ecosystem and global level. Topics of highest societal relevance, such as the impact of genetically modified organisms, are interlinked with more conventional ecological aspects, including biodiversity. The combination of these approaches is new and makes compelling reading for researchers and environmentalists.

Many people are not aware of the adorable and hardy land mollusks, more commonly referred to as land snails. There are over 60,000 species of land snails, and of those, there are 4 common species that are kept as pets. Snails we talk about are the Giant African Land Snail, Helix Aspersa, Milk Snails, and Bulimulus land snails.
