Book Synopsis The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child: An Analysis of Treaty Provisions and Implications of U.S. Ratification by : Jonathan Todres
Download or read book The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child: An Analysis of Treaty Provisions and Implications of U.S. Ratification written by Jonathan Todres and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This in-depth text goes beyond the rhetoric of the debate on children’s rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in particular, to provide a detailed examination of the impact that U.S. ratification of the Convention would have on U.S. law. The chapters have been written by leading children’s advocates and scholars with a general audience in mind, as the authors believe that it is important for all Americans to become informed about the Convention and about children’s rights in general. With a greater understanding of the substance of the Convention and children’s rights, readers will be better positioned to determine what the real issues are, what is simply rhetoric without any basis in fact or law, and how they can address the real issues in an effective manner in order to provide a better world for all children.
Book Synopsis Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, by : Christian Tams
Download or read book Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, written by Christian Tams and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Genocide Convention) has a special standing in international law and international politics. For 60 years, the crime of genocide has been recognised as the most horrendous crime in international law, famously designated the 'crime of crimes'. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of its adoption the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights stated that 'genocide is the ultimate form of discrimination'. In the same context the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court described the Genocide Convention as a 'visionary and founding text for the Court'. The Convention has as such influenced the subsequent development of many different areas of international law. For example, the 1951 Advisory Opinion on the Genocide Convention enabled the International Court of Justice to shape the modern regime of reservations to treaties. More recently, the prohibition against genocide has become a crucial pillar of the regime of international criminal law developing since the 1990s, with genocide being one of the core crimes falling under the jurisdiction of the UN ad hoc tribunals, the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia and the permanent International Criminal Court. In this work the 19 provisions of the Convention are analysed article-by-article, with abundant references to state practice and case law.

A deft but readable application of psychoanalytic theories, especially masochism (by way of Deleuze and Studlar), extends the utility of psychoanalysis to the understanding of film genre and film audiences. It is indispensable reading for scholars and students of film theory.

Book Synopsis The Ghost on the Ramparts and Other Essays in the Humanities by : Robert B. Heilman
Download or read book The Ghost on the Ramparts and Other Essays in the Humanities written by Robert B. Heilman and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ghost on the Ramparts presents fourteen of R. B. Heilman's essays on the teaching of English and the profession of the humanities. These essays deal with such diverse topics as administrative ways and means, pedagogical shibboleths and heresies, uses and abuses of literacy, clichés of style, moot issues of history and criticism, and above all the nature of the humanities and their continuing significance. The persuasive discussions of all these subjects reflect the author's wide professional experience, his wit and wisdom, and his superb sense of style. The chairman of a distinguished English department for over twenty years, Heilman well knew the ins and outs of administration. He considers not only the practical problems of maintaining a large department but also the more complex matters involving a chairman's attitude toward deans, toward colleagues of many kinds, and toward oneself as a committed teacher and administrator. Also a literary critic of established reputation, Heilman's explicative side appears in most of these essays as he provides illustrative examples from many different sources while discussing the nature of history and criticism in the humanities. The unity of these essays is no less impressive than the mind of their maker, who instances a remarkable capacity for seeing life in the humanities steadily and whole.
