Book excerpt: The History of Olympics can be traced all the way back into the ancient Greek times while they honored Zeus with many days of celebration, praise and the sporting events of the times. Back then only men from Greece could participate and there were no woman allowed. Heracles, a son of Zeus was said to have started the first Olympics and the History of Olympics and events that were held started evolving from there. There were many running events along with events in chariot racing and various games to see who could hurl a javelin the farthest and the same things was done with a heavy metal discus. These ancient Olympics are thought to have started out in or around the year 776 B.C. and continued for around twelve centuries when they were banned for being sacrilegious and offending to Christianity.

Download or read book Sound Affects written by Sharon Jane Mee and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sound Affects: A User's Guide is a collection of sonically-charged concepts ranging from those felt, 'heard' and repeated (silence, the oriental riff, shuffle), to the vocal (whispers, sing, the disembodied voice), to sounds at the threshold (tin/ny, thump, buzz) to sounds beyond the limits of audibility (inaudible tremors, distortion, sub-bass). Sound Affects invites the reader to reflect on the ways that sounds produce affects and the ways that affects can operate as sound. Each of the entries develops a particular perspective on sound and affect through a close analysis of audiovisual and/or sonic objects. The objects chosen not only illustrate the concept in question but also demonstrate how the object encourages us to rethink the relationships between sounds and affects. Influenced by the sound theory of Eugenie Brinkema (2011), the concepts of Sound Affects plot the shift in volume from silence that opens up a space to be heard to the audibly near, from the audibly near to sounds beyond the limits of audibility. Sound Affects is an intellectual adventure for those who theorize and listen. The book can also be enjoyed as a narrative of sounds, its absences and its shifting intensities.
Book Synopsis The Politics of Interweaving Performance Cultures by : Erika Fischer-Lichte
Download or read book The Politics of Interweaving Performance Cultures written by Erika Fischer-Lichte and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a timely intervention in the fields of performance studies and theatre history, and to larger issues of global cultural exchange. The authors offer a provocative argument for rethinking the scholarly assessment of how diverse performative cultures interact, how they are interwoven, and how they are dependent upon each other. While the term ‘intercultural theatre’ as a concept points back to postcolonialism and its contradictions, The Politics of Interweaving Performance Cultures explores global developments in the performing arts that cannot adequately be explained and understood using postcolonial theory. The authors challenge the dichotomy ‘the West and the rest’ – where Western cultures are ‘universal’ and non-Western cultures are ‘particular’ – as well as ideas of national culture and cultural ownership. This volume uses international case studies to explore the politics of globalization, looking at new paternalistic forms of exchange and the new inequalities emerging from it. These case studies are guided by the principle that processes of interweaving performance cultures are, in fact, political processes. The authors explore the inextricability of the aesthetic and the political, whereby aesthetics cannot be perceived as opposite to the political; rather, the aesthetic is the political. Helen Gilbert’s essay ‘Let the Games Begin: Pageants, Protests, Indigeneity (1968–2010)’won the 2015 Marlis Thiersch Prize for best essay from the Australasian Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies Association.
Book Synopsis Forty Years of Sport and Social Change, 1968-2008 by : Russell Field
Download or read book Forty Years of Sport and Social Change, 1968-2008 written by Russell Field and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1968 was a year of protest in civil society (Prague, Paris, Chicago) and a year of protest in sport. After a world-wide campaign, the anti-apartheid movement succeeded in barring South Africa from the Olympic Games, while US athletes from the Olympic Project for Human Rights used the medals podium to decry the racism of North America. Meanwhile, students in Mexico demonstrated against social priorities in Mexico, the host of the 1968 Games. These events contributed significantly to the rejection of the idea that sports are apolitical, and stimulated the scholarly study of sport across the social sciences. Leading up to the Beijing Olympic Games, similar dynamics were played out across the globe, while a campaign was underway to boycott the ‘Genocide Olympics’. The volume, To Remember is to Resist, came out of a three-day conference on sports, human rights and social change hosted by the University of Toronto forty years after Mexico and eighty days before the Beijing Opening Ceremony. The contributions to this volume capture the memories of activists who were "on the ground" using sport as a site for the struggle for human rights and provide scholarly examinations of past and current human rights movements in sport. This book was previously published as a special issue of Sport in Society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The War in Iraq, the 2000 Election Debacle, the Monica Lewinsky Affair, and so many other pivotal events shaped the American experience in the 21st Century. This book takes the timelines for these critical events (and MANY more), and then it meshes them together for a historical perspective. They say "Hindsight is 20-20," and as such, readers can now see those events in the context of their times, and not the context of a politically-charged opinion piece. Here and now, readers can view the entire American experience in Iraq from President Bush Sr.'s 9/11/90 address to Congress (in which he declared the start of a New World Order), through the wars, the inspections, the repeated air campaigns, the failed diplomacy, and finally to Saddam's capture. There are also specific sections showing never-before seen timelines of The Ignored War over the No-Fly Zones in Iraq, and the growth of Al Queda in the New World Order. Events which continue to be viewed in a political perspective had a historical effect and not just a political effect.
