Book Synopsis What Are We Doing When We Pray? by : Vincent Brümmer
Download or read book What Are We Doing When We Pray? written by Vincent Brümmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vincent Brümmer's classic book on prayer from 1984 provides a comprehensive philosophical analysis of central issues regarding the nature and practice of prayer. What do we do when we ask things of other people, when we thank them or praise them, when we express penitence for what we have done to them and ask their forgiveness? And how does doing these things in relation to God differ from when we do them in relation to other people? And what does this entail for the existence and nature of the God to whom we pray? This new edition has been substantially revised and updated. Three new chapters have been added which develop in detail a hint by G.K. Chesterton that faith 'is not a thing like a theory but a thing like a love affair.' Since prayer is the expression of this 'love affair' it is also the clue to understanding the nature of faith. These chapters contribute significantly to the current academic interest in spirituality by showing how Brümmer's analysis of prayer helps us to understand the nature of spirituality, of faith and religious belief, and of theology. Spirituality is not aimed at achieving religious 'experiences' or mystical 'knowledge' about God; it is primarily aimed at attaining the religious form of life and at coming to see the world in the light of faith. Religious belief is not merely a cognitive enterprise like science; it cannot be divorced from spirituality and the life of faith, and is therefore fundamentally existential and not merely intellectual. Serving as a valuable core text for students, this book also contributes to a number of current debates in theology and philosophy of religion: the debates on realism and religious belief, on the rationality of faith and the nature of theology, on the relation between religious belief and morality, on the relation between science and religion and the lively debate among evangelical Christians in America on the 'openness of God.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Directors in the Childrens Advocacy Centers of Georgia state network of CACs have collaborated on a book certain to provide words of future hope and healing for the courageous children who have been victims of childhood sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Indeed, anyone who has experienced a traumatic event, or have been the loved one of such a person, will find value and meaning to the thoughts and messages inside this book. Our mission is to be, now and always, for the children. ___________________ People who work at Childrens Advocacy Centers go to work not just for a job, but in commitment to an important cause. Ultimately, their response and involvement with a child who has alleged child abuse and the childs family, while significant, is relatively brief considering the future lifetime of a child. However, this can be a critical pivot point for everyone involved. With this book, the Childrens Advocacy Centers of Georgia, through the amazing words of the Executive Directors of Georgias CACs, seek to expand their positive influence beyond the immediate needs of child survivors of abuse and their families. The words in this book are parting gifts for the children and families who are served in Childrens Advocacy Centers, for them to read and contemplate, and then re-read, in their own individual journeys toward health and healing (Chris Newlin, MS LPC, executive director, National Childrens Advocacy Center, Huntsville, Alabama).

Book Synopsis New Approaches to Monetary Theory by : Heiner Ganßmann
Download or read book New Approaches to Monetary Theory written by Heiner Ganßmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everybody uses money every day, but we rarely stop to think about how money works. In this book, scholars from different disciplines seek to answer that question; from historians to economists, sociologists, a philosopher and a physicist. Money works as a social construction because we have mutual expectations that support its use – despite the seeming irrationality of trading valuable things or doing strenuous work for pieces of paper or numbers in accounts. Recently, there has been a revival of interest in monetary theory, not least because the impacts of globalizing markets and of new communication and information technologies have changed the forms of money. The deep crisis of the financial system has demonstrated the importance of a functioning monetary system and although renewed interest in this has led to significant contributions in various fields, it remains true that no social science discipline on its own is sufficiently equipped to explain the basic workings of monetary systems, their rapid innovation and their effects on social, economic and political structures. The contributors to this book report on their latest research on the origins of money, on the nature of monetary transactions, on money and the state, and on the role of money and finance in the recent global crisis. They show how established theories of money and the policies guided by these theories went wrong. This collection will be a valuable resource for students and researchers seeking a deeper understanding of money.

Book Synopsis The Politics and Science of Prevision by : Andreas Wenger
Download or read book The Politics and Science of Prevision written by Andreas Wenger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book inquires into the use of prediction at the intersection of politics and academia, and reflects upon the implications of future-oriented policy-making across different fields. The volume focuses on the key intricacies and fallacies of prevision in a time of complexity, uncertainty, and unpredictability. The first part of the book discusses different academic perspectives and contributions to future-oriented policy-making. The second part discusses the role of future knowledge in decision-making across different empirical issues such as climate, health, finance, bio- and nuclear weapons, civil war, and crime. It analyses how prediction is integrated into public policy and governance, and how in return governance structures influence the making of knowledge about the future. Contributors integrate two analytical dimensions in their chapters: the epistemology of prevision and the political and ethical implications of prevision. In this way, the volume contributes to a better understanding of the complex interaction and feedback loops between the processes of creating knowledge about the future and the application of this future knowledge in public policy and governance. This book will be of much interest to students of security studies, political science, sociology, technology studies, and International Relations. Book Synopsis Until Death Does Its Part by : Jonthan Downing
Download or read book Until Death Does Its Part written by Jonthan Downing and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until Death Does Its Part is a term people equate to a ceremony or consider useful only in a matrimonial vow. However, it is pertinent in the lives of Christians every day. The Light affliction that God's chosen people suffer and die to are for a more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Death has to do its part in us, meaning the dying of one's self to the will of our creator God. When we choose to give God what he is longing for in our lives without compromise, we reap the benefits of a peaceable fruit. Death has a part in living the victorious abundant life. God's son died for us, and we must die to self without reservation. The fullness of time has come for the manifestation of the sons of God. Only those who have died to self will reap the harvest. John 3:3""7 lets us know that not only are Christians born again when we come to salvation, but we also continue dying to self as part of the sanctification process. But the dying to self is not easy and must be embraced daily with tenacity and confidence in knowing that he who brought us to this will also bring us through it. Every step on the ladder takes us up higher and the temptation, sometimes greater, but in the midst of it all, we remember the third day of being elevated. The seed that falls to the ground and die will indeed reproduce a ripe harvest and be raised as a testimony of his glory. Living out our destiny and purpose will promote us to dying a thousand deaths to this life. But we were made for this. We must accept what God is calling us to""Until Death Does Its Part!
Book Synopsis Post-Conflict Social and Economic Recovery in Timor-Leste by : Andrew McWilliam
Download or read book Post-Conflict Social and Economic Recovery in Timor-Leste written by Andrew McWilliam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-02 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a rich ethnography of post-conflict social and economic recovery in East Timor following the end of Indonesian military occupation of the territory in 1999. It offers a longer-term analysis of the pathways to rebuilding and restoring local community life, and the budding prosperity that has flowed from participation in spontaneous circular labour migration and the remittance benefits that have followed. Based on extensive comparative literature and field-based empirical research, the book explores the protracted process of cultural and economic revival following a generation-long period of military repression and a sustained struggle for national independence. With a focus on the experiences of Fataluku ethno-linguistic communities in Timor-Leste, the study offers nuanced perspectives on the legacies of conflict and local forms of governance, the revitalisation of customary exchange and ancestral religion. Presenting both an optimistic and alternative narrative in which a traumatised population finds new hope and emergent prosperity, this book highlights a renewed concern with inter-generational well-being and widespread aspirations for prosperity and material benefits following decades of deprivation. It is also an analysis of post-conflict resilience against the odds, illustrating the adaptive possibilities of tradition in the context of globalisation and expectations of modernity. As a major contribution to understanding the emergence and expansion of informal transnational labour migration out of East Timor, this book will be of interest to academics, researchers and policy makers of contemporary Timor-Leste, Southeast Asian Politics, Southeast Asian Culture and Society, Development Studies, Anthropology and Conflict Studies.
