Book excerpt: This work contains a complete description of the set of all unitarizable highest weight modules of classical Lie superalgebras. Unitarity is defined in the superalgebraic sense, and all the algebras are over the complex numbers. Part of the classification determines which real forms, defined by anti-linear anti-involutions, may occur. Although there have been many investigations for some special superalgebras, this appears to be the first systematic study of the problem.

Book excerpt: Lie superalgebras are a natural generalization of Lie algebras, having applications in geometry, number theory, gauge field theory, and string theory. This book develops the theory of Lie superalgebras, their enveloping algebras, and their representations. The book begins with five chapters on the basic properties of Lie superalgebras, including explicit constructions for all the classical simple Lie superalgebras. Borel subalgebras, which are more subtle in this setting, are studied and described. Contragredient Lie superalgebras are introduced, allowing a unified approach to several results, in particular to the existence of an invariant bilinear form on $\mathfrak{g}$. The enveloping algebra of a finite dimensional Lie superalgebra is studied as an extension of the enveloping algebra of the even part of the superalgebra. By developing general methods for studying such extensions, important information on the algebraic structure is obtained, particularly with regard to primitive ideals. Fundamental results, such as the Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt Theorem, are established. Representations of Lie superalgebras provide valuable tools for understanding the algebras themselves, as well as being of primary interest in applications to other fields. Two important classes of representations are the Verma modules and the finite dimensional representations. The fundamental results here include the Jantzen filtration, the Harish-Chandra homomorphism, the Sapovalov determinant, supersymmetric polynomials, and Schur-Weyl duality. Using these tools, the center can be explicitly described in the general linear and orthosymplectic cases. In an effort to make the presentation as self-contained as possible, some background material is included on Lie theory, ring theory, Hopf algebras, and combinatorics.

Book excerpt: Supersymmetry was created by the physicists in the 1970's to give a unified treatment of fermions and bosons, the basic constituents of matter. Since then its mathematical structure has been recognized as that of a new development in geometry, and mathematicians have busied themselves with exploring this aspect. This volume collects recent advances in this field, both from a physical and a mathematical point of view, with an accent on a rigorous treatment of the various questions raised.

Book excerpt: Almost free divisors and complete intersections form a general class of nonisolated hypersurface and completer intersection singularities. They also include discriminants of mappings, bifurcation sets, and certain types of arrangements of hyperplanes such as Coxeter arrangements and generic arrangements. Associated to the singularities of this class is a "singular Milnor fibration" which has the same homotopy properties as the Milnor fibration for isolated singularities. This memoir deduces topological properties of singularities in a number of situations including: complements of hyperplane arrangements, various nonisolated complete intersections, nonlinear arrangements of hypersurfaces, functions on discriminants, singularities defined by compositions of functions, and bifurcation sets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes a new way of looking at the classical inequalities. The most famous such results (Hilbert, Hardy, and Copson) may be interpreted as inclusion relationships, $l^p\subseteq Y$, between certain (Banach) sequence spaces, the norm of the injection being the best constant of the particular inequality. The authors' approach is to replace $l^p$ by a larger space, $X$, with the properties: $\Vert l^p\subseteq X\Vert =1$ and $\Vert X\subseteq Y\Vert =\Vert l^p\subseteq Y\Vert$, the norm on $X$ being so designed that the former property is intuitive. Any such result constitutes an enhancement of the original inequality, because you now have the classical estimate, $\Vert l^p\subseteq Y\Vert$, holding for a larger collection, $X=Y$. The authors' analysis has some noteworthy features: The inequalities of Hilbert, Hardy, and Copson (and others) all share the same space $Y$. That space-alias ces($p$ )-being central to so many celebrated inequalities, the authors conclude, must surely be important. It is studied here in considerable detail. The renorming of $Y$ is based upon a simple factorization, $Y= l^p\cdot Z$ (coordinatewise products), wherein $Z$ is described explicitly. That there is indeed a renorming, however, is not so simple. It is proved only after much preparation when duality theory is considered.

Book excerpt: This work explores the connection between the lattice of recursively enumerable (r.e.) sets and the r.e. Turing degrees. Cholak presents a degree-theoretic technique for constructing both automorphisms of the lattice of r.e. sets and isomorphisms between various substructures of the lattice. In addition to providing another proof of Soare's Extension Theorem, this technique is used to prove a collection of new results, including: every non recursive r.e. set is automorphic to a high r.e. set; and for every non recursive r.e. set $A$ and for every high r.e. degree h there is an r.e. set $B$ in h such that $A$ and $B$ form isomorphic principal filters in the lattice of r.e. sets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a general systematic analysis of the notions of ``projectivity'' and ``injectivity'' in the context of Hilbert modules over operator algebras. A Hilbert module over an operator algebra $A$ is simply the Hilbert space of a (contractive) representation of $A$ viewed as a module over $A$ in the usual way. In this work, Muhly and Solel introduce various notions of projective Hilbert modules and use them to investigate dilation and commutant lifting problems over certain infinite dimensional analogues of incidence algebras. The authors prove that commutant lifting holds for such an algebra if and only if the pattern indexing the algebra is a ``tree'' in the sense of computer directories.

Book excerpt: Various notions of the Markov property relative to a partial ordering have been proposed by both physicists and mathematicians. This work develops techniques for stying Markov fields on partially ordered sets. We introduce random transformations of the index set which preserves the Markov property of the field. These transformations yield new classes of Markov fields starting from relatively simple ones. Examples include a model for crack formation and a model for the distribution of fibres in a composite material.

Book excerpt: This work studies equivariant linear second order elliptic operators P on a connected noncompact manifold X with a given action of a group G . The action is assumed to be cocompact, meaning that GV=X for some compact subset V of X . The aim is to study the structure of the convex cone of all positive solutions of Pu= 0. It turns out that the set of all normalized positive solutions which are also eigenfunctions of the given G -action can be realized as a real analytic submanifold *G [0 of an appropriate topological vector space *H . When G is finitely generated, *H has finite dimension, and in nontrivial cases *G [0 is the boundary of a strictly convex body in *H. When G is nilpotent, any positive solution u can be represented as an integral with respect to some uniquely defined positive Borel measure over *G [0 . Lin and Pinchover also discuss related results for parabolic equations on X and for elliptic operators on noncompact manifolds with boundary.

Book excerpt: Bounds for orthogonal polynomials which hold on the whole interval of orthogonality are crucial to investigating mean convergence of orthogonal expansions, weighted approximation theory, and the structure of weighted spaces. This book focuses on a method of obtaining such bounds for orthogonal polynomials (and their Christoffel functions) associated with weights on $[-1,1]$. Levin and Lubinsky obtain such bounds for weights that vanish strongly at 1 and $-1$. They also present uniform estimates of spacing of zeros of orthogonal polynomials and applications to weighted approximation theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir examines the automorphism group of a group $G$ with a fixed free product decomposition $G_1*\cdots *G_n$. An automorphism is called symmetric if it carries each factor $G_i$ to a conjugate of a (possibly different) factor $G_j$. The symmetric automorphisms form a group $\Sigma Aut(G)$ which contains the inner automorphism group $Inn(G)$. The quotient $\Sigma Aut(G)/Inn(G)$ is the symmetric outer automorphism group $\Sigma Out(G)$, a subgroup of $Out(G)$. It coincides with $Out(G)$ if the $G_i$ are indecomposable and none of them is infinite cyclic. To study $\Sigma Out(G)$, the authors construct an $(n-2)$-dimensional simplicial complex $K(G)$ which admits a simplicial action of $Out(G)$. The stabilizer of one of its components is $\Sigma Out(G)$, and the quotient is a finite complex. The authors prove that each component of $K(G)$ is contractible and describe the vertex stabilizers as elementary constructs involving the groups $G_i$ and $Aut(G_i)$. From this information, two new structural descriptions of $\Sigma Aut (G)$ are obtained. One identifies a normal subgroup in $\Sigma Aut(G)$ of cohomological dimension $(n-1)$ and describes its quotient group, and the other presents $\Sigma Aut (G)$ as an amalgam of some vertex stabilizers. Other applications concern torsion and homological finiteness properties of $\Sigma Out (G)$ and give information about finite groups of symmetric automorphisms. The complex $K(G)$ is shown to be equivariantly homotopy equivalent to a space of $G$-actions on $\mathbb R$-trees, although a simplicial topology rather than the Gromov topology must be used on the space of actions.

Lin studies $E(X,A)$, the quotient of $\mathrm{{\mathbf{Ext}}}^{eu}_s(C(X),A)$ by a special class of trivial extension, dubbed totally trivial extensions. This leads to a BDF-type classification for extensions of $C(X)$ by a $\sigma$-unital purely infinite simple $C^*$-algebra with trivial $K_1$-group. Lin also shows that, when $X$ is a compact subset of the plane, every extension of $C(X)$ by a finite matroid $C^*$-algebra is totally trivial. Classification of these extensions for nice spaces is given, as are some other versions of the Weyl-von Neumann-Berg theorem.
