Book excerpt: Various notions of the Markov property relative to a partial ordering have been proposed by both physicists and mathematicians. This work develops techniques for stying Markov fields on partially ordered sets. We introduce random transformations of the index set which preserves the Markov property of the field. These transformations yield new classes of Markov fields starting from relatively simple ones. Examples include a model for crack formation and a model for the distribution of fibres in a composite material.

Book excerpt: In this book, the author investigates a class of smooth one parameter families of vector fields on some $n$-dimensional manifold, exhibiting a homoclinic bifurcation. That is, he considers generic families $x_\mu$, where $x_0$ has a distinguished hyperbolic singularity $p$ and a homoclinic orbit; an orbit converging to $p$ both for positive and negative time. It is assumed that this homoclinic orbit is of saddle-saddle type, characterized by the existence of well-defined directions along which it converges to the singularity $p$. The study is not confined to a small neighborhood of the homoclinic orbit. Instead, the position of the stable and unstable set of the homoclinic orbit is incorporated and it is shown that homoclinic bifurcations can lead to complicated bifurcations and dynamics, including phenomena like intermittency and annihilation of suspended horseshoes.

Book excerpt: This well-written book is a timely and significant contribution to the understanding of difference equations. Presenting machinery for analyzing many discrete physical situations, the book will be of interest to physicists and engineers as well as mathematicians. The book develops a theory for regular and singular Sturm-Liouville boundary value problems for difference equations, generalizing many of the known results for differential equations. Discussing the self-adjointness of these problems as well as their abstract spectral resolution in the appropriate $L^2$ setting, the book gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a second-order difference operator to be self-adjoint and have orthogonal polynomials as eigenfunctions. These polynomials are classified into four categories, each of which is given a properties survey and a representative example. Finally, the book shows that the various difference operators defined for these problems are still self-adjoint when restricted to ``energy norms''. This book is suitable as a text for an advanced graduate course on Sturm-Liouville operators or on applied analysis.

Book excerpt: This work explores the connection between the lattice of recursively enumerable (r.e.) sets and the r.e. Turing degrees. Cholak presents a degree-theoretic technique for constructing both automorphisms of the lattice of r.e. sets and isomorphisms between various substructures of the lattice. In addition to providing another proof of Soare's Extension Theorem, this technique is used to prove a collection of new results, including: every non recursive r.e. set is automorphic to a high r.e. set; and for every non recursive r.e. set $A$ and for every high r.e. degree h there is an r.e. set $B$ in h such that $A$ and $B$ form isomorphic principal filters in the lattice of r.e. sets.

Book excerpt: This book gives a general systematic analysis of the notions of ``projectivity'' and ``injectivity'' in the context of Hilbert modules over operator algebras. A Hilbert module over an operator algebra $A$ is simply the Hilbert space of a (contractive) representation of $A$ viewed as a module over $A$ in the usual way. In this work, Muhly and Solel introduce various notions of projective Hilbert modules and use them to investigate dilation and commutant lifting problems over certain infinite dimensional analogues of incidence algebras. The authors prove that commutant lifting holds for such an algebra if and only if the pattern indexing the algebra is a ``tree'' in the sense of computer directories.

Book excerpt: The subject of this memoir is the spectrum of a Dirac-type operator on an odd-dimensional manifold M with boundary and, particularly, how this spectrum varies under an analytic perturbation of the operator. Two types of eigenfunctions are considered: first, those satisfying the ``global boundary conditions'' of Atiyah, Patodi, and Singer and second, those which extend to $L^2$ eigenfunctions on M with an infinite collar attached to its boundary. The unifying idea behind the analysis of these two types of spectra is the notion of certain ``eigenvalue-Lagrangians'' in the symplectic space $L^2(\partial M)$, an idea due to Mrowka and Nicolaescu. By studying the dynamics of these Lagrangians, the authors are able to establish that those portions of the two types of spectra which pass through zero behave in essentially the same way (to first non-vanishing order). In certain cases, this leads to topological algorithms for computing spectral flow.

Book excerpt: This book develops stochastic integration with respect to ``Brownian trees'' and its associated stochastic calculus, with the aim of proving pathwise existence and uniqueness in a stochastic equation driven by a historical Brownian motion. Perkins uses these results and a Girsanov-type theorem to prove that the martingale problem for the historical process associated with a wide class of interactive branching measure-valued diffusions (superprocesses) is well posed. The resulting measure-valued processes will arise as limits of the empirical measures of branching particle systems in which particles interact through their spatial motions or, to a lesser extent, through their branching rates.

Book excerpt: In this book, the authors generalize with respect to a tilting module of projective dimension at most one for an artin algebra to tilting with respect to a torsion pair in an abelian category. A general theory is developed for such tilting and the reader is led to a generalization for tilted algebras which the authors call ``quasitilted algebras''. This class also contains the canonical algebras, and the authors show that the quasitilted algebras are characterized by having global dimension at most two and each indecomposable module having projective dimension at most one or injective dimension at most one. The authors also give other characterizations of quasitilted algebras and give methods for constructing such algebras. In particular, they investigate when one-point extensions of hereditary algebras are quasitilted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes a new way of looking at the classical inequalities. The most famous such results (Hilbert, Hardy, and Copson) may be interpreted as inclusion relationships, $l^p\subseteq Y$, between certain (Banach) sequence spaces, the norm of the injection being the best constant of the particular inequality. The authors' approach is to replace $l^p$ by a larger space, $X$, with the properties: $\Vert l^p\subseteq X\Vert =1$ and $\Vert X\subseteq Y\Vert =\Vert l^p\subseteq Y\Vert$, the norm on $X$ being so designed that the former property is intuitive. Any such result constitutes an enhancement of the original inequality, because you now have the classical estimate, $\Vert l^p\subseteq Y\Vert$, holding for a larger collection, $X=Y$. The authors' analysis has some noteworthy features: The inequalities of Hilbert, Hardy, and Copson (and others) all share the same space $Y$. That space-alias ces($p$ )-being central to so many celebrated inequalities, the authors conclude, must surely be important. It is studied here in considerable detail. The renorming of $Y$ is based upon a simple factorization, $Y= l^p\cdot Z$ (coordinatewise products), wherein $Z$ is described explicitly. That there is indeed a renorming, however, is not so simple. It is proved only after much preparation when duality theory is considered.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If $k$ is a field, $T$ an analytic indeterminate over $k$, and $n_1, \ldots, n_h$ are natural numbers, then the semigroup ring $A = k[[T^{n_1}, \ldots, T^{n_h}]]$ is a Noetherian local one-dimensional domain whose integral closure, $k[[T]]$, is a finitely generated $A$-module. There is clearly a close connection between $A$ and the numerical semigroup generated by $n_1, \ldots, n_h$. More generally, let $A$ be a Noetherian local domain which is analytically irreducible and one-dimensional (equivalently, whose integral closure $V$ is a DVR and a finitely generated $A$-module). As noted by Kunz in 1970, some algebraic properties of $A$ such as ``Gorenstein'' can be characterized by using the numerical semigroup of $A$ (i.e., the subset of $N$ consisting of all the images of nonzero elements of $A$ under the valuation associated to $V$ ). This book's main purpose is to deepen the semigroup-theoretic approach in studying rings A of the above kind, thereby enlarging the class of applications well beyond semigroup rings. For this reason, Chapter I is devoted to introducing several new semigroup-theoretic properties which are analogous to various classical ring-theoretic concepts. Then, in Chapter II, the earlier material is applied in systematically studying rings $A$ of the above type. As the authors examine the connections between semigroup-theoretic properties and the correspondingly named ring-theoretic properties, there are some perfect characterizations (symmetric $\Leftrightarrow$ Gorenstein; pseudo-symmetric $\Leftrightarrow$ Kunz, a new class of domains of Cohen-Macaulay type 2). However, some of the semigroup properties (such as ``Arf'' and ``maximal embedding dimension'') do not, by themselves, characterize the corresponding ring properties. To forge such characterizations, one also needs to compare the semigroup- and ring-theoretic notions of ``type''. For this reason, the book introduces and extensively uses ``type sequences'' in both the semigroup and the ring contexts.

Book excerpt: One of the major topics in symbolic dynamics is the analysis of the dynamical systems defined by endomorphisms and automorphisms of subshifts. This includes analysis of the dynamical behavior of one-dimensional cellular automata as a special case. In this work, Nasu introduces the notion of a textile system, which is useful in analyzing the dynamical systems defined by endomorphisms and automorphisms of topological Markov shifts, including one-sided ones. The dynamical properties of automorphisms of sofic systems are also studied. Requiring few prerequisites, this work will appeal not only to specialists in symbolic dynamics but also to nonspecialists interested in symbolic dynamics and those interested in analysis of the dynamical behavior of cellular automata.

Book excerpt: The equation $x'(t) = - \mu x(t) + f(x(t-1))$, with $\mu \geq 0$ and $xf(x) \le 0$ for $0\neq x\in {\mathbb R}$, is a prototype for delayed negative feedback combined with friction. Its semiflow on $C=C([-1,0],{\mathbb R})$ leaves a set $S$ invariant, which also plays a major role for the dynamics on the full space $C$. The main result determines the attractor of the semiflow restricted to the closure of $S$ for monotone, bounded, smooth $f$. In the course of the proof, Walther derives Poincare-Bendixson theorems for differential-delay equations. The method used here is unique in its use of winding numbers and homotopies in nonconvex sets.

Book excerpt: This book presents a systematic study of a new equivariant cohomology theory $t(k_G)^*$ constructed from any given equivariant cohomology theory $k^*_G$, where $G$ is a compact Lie group. Special cases include Tate-Swan cohomology when $G$ is finite and a version of cyclic cohomology when $G = S^1$. The groups $t(k_G)^*(X)$ are obtained by suitably splicing the $k$-homology with the $k$-cohomology of the Borel construction $EG\times _G X$, where $k^*$ is the nonequivariant cohomology theory that underlies $k^*_G$. The new theories play a central role in relating equivariant algebraic topology with current areas of interest in nonequivariant algebraic topology. Their study is essential to a full understanding of such ``completion theorems'' as the Atiyah-Segal completion theorem in $K$-theory and the Segal conjecture in cohomotopy. When $G$ is finite, the Tate theory associated to equivariant $K$-theory is calculated completely, and the Tate theory associated to equivariant cohomotopy is shown to encode a mysterious web of connections between the Tate cohomology of finite groups and the stable homotopy groups of spheres.

Book excerpt: Recent years have seen renewed interest in the solution of parabolic boundary value problems by the method of layer potentials, a method that has been extraordinarily useful in the solution of elliptic problems. This book develops this method for the heat equation in time-varying domains. In the first chapter, Lewis and Murray show that certain singular integral operators on $L^p$ are bounded. In the second chapter, they develop a modification of the David buildup scheme, as well as some extension theorems, to obtain $L^p$ boundedness of the double layer heat potential on the boundary of the domains. The third chapter uses the results of the first two, along with a buildup scheme, to show the mutual absolute continuity of parabolic measure and a certain projective Lebesgue measure. Lewis and Murray also obtain $A_\infty$ results and discuss the Dirichlet and Neumann problems for a certain subclass of the domains.
