Book excerpt: Freja is a joint Swedish and German satellite, launched on October 6, 1992 and orbiting at 600--1750 km, covering the lower part of the auroral acceleration region. It has been designed to provide high-resolution measurements (both temporal and spatial) of auroral plasma characteristics. The high telemetry rate, together with the 15 Mbyte distributed on-board memories allow Freja to resolve meso and micro-scale phenomena in the 100 m range for particles and 1--10 m range for electric and magnetic fields. The UV imager resolves auroral structures of 1 km size at a time resolution of one image every 6 s. The novel plasma instruments are orders of magnitude better than any that have gone before. The Freja Mission is about the scientific objectives, instruments and platform itself. Detailed descriptions are given of the instrumentation and the first data acquired. It is one of the very few books to contain such material in a single volume, relating the instruments' design with their in-flight characteristics. Attended by 150 participants from 18 countries the colloquium was organized into five major themes: regional development, lessons learned, innovations, scientific applications, and education. A special session was organized as well by the organizing committee and supported by the National Space Program Office to present its development of the Taiwan's satellite program and the current status of ROCSAT-1 which is scheduled to be launched at the beginning of 1999. Two main conclusions were drawn from the material presented: microsatellite in general is a very good means for doing space research and technology development, and a suitable vehicle to promote international collaborations.

A principal goal of space plasma researchers is to understand the influence of various transport processes on each other, even when such processes operate at widely varying spatial and temporal scales. We know that large-scale plasma flows in space lead to unstable conditions with small spatial (centimeters to meters) and temporal (microseconds to seconds) scales. The large-scale flows, for example in the magnetosphere-ionosphere system, involve scale lengths of kilometers to several Earth radii and temporal scales of minutes to hours. We must know specific contextual answers to the questions: Do the small-scale waves (microprocesses) modify the large-scale flows? Do these modifications significantly affect the transport of mass, momentum, and energy? How can such coupling processes and their influences be revealed observationally? And, perhaps most challenging of all, how do we incorporate the microprocesses into theoretical models of larger-scale space plasma transport?

Solar system plasmas are highly structured and dynamic and are characterized by great variability in both space and time. The variations in their spatial distribution and temporal evolution occur on a variety of scales, ranging from kilometers (ion gyroradius) to hundreds of thousands of kilometers (coronal mass ejections) and from microseconds (electron plasma frequency) to years (solar sunspot cycle). Space plasma physicists seeking to understand the complex plasma phenomena that occur at the Sun, in the solar wind, and in the magnetospheres and ionospheres of the Earth and other solar system bodies thus face twin challenges. First, they must distinguish variations that are spatial in nature from those that are temporal. The heavy reliance in past investigations on singlepoint in situ measurements has significantly limited their ability to do this. Second, space physicists must elucidate the interrelationships among micro-, meso-, and macroscale plasma phenomena, relationships that organize the various solar system plasmas into a single heliospheric plasma system embedded in the interstellar medium. Here, too, experimental limitations have constrained the development of a global picture of solar system plasmas. However, new technologies promise a significant advance in our understanding of the interconnectedness of solar system plasmas.

Alfven waves are low-frequency and long-wavelength fluctuations that pervade laboratory, space and cosmic plasmas. KAWs are dispersive Alfven waves with a short wavelength comparable to particle kinematic scales and hence can play important roles in the energization and transport of plasma particles, the formation of fine magneto-plasma structures, and the dissipation of turbulent Alfven waves. Since the 1990s, experimental studies on KAWs in laboratory and space plasmas have significantly advanced our understanding of KAWs, making them an increasingly interesting subject. Without a doubt, the solar–terrestrial coupling system provides us with a unique natural laboratory for the comprehensive study of KAWs. This book presents extensive observations of KAWs in solar and heliospheric plasmas, as well as numerous applications of KAWs in the solar-terrestrial coupling system, including solar atmosphere heating, solarwind turbulence, solar wind-magnetosphere interactions, and magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling. In addition, for the sake of consistency, the book includes the basic theories and physical properties of KAWs, as well as their experimental demonstrations in laboratory plasmas. In closing, it discusses possible applications of KAWs to other astrophysical plasmas. Book excerpt: Cluster was one of the two missions - the other being the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) - constituting the Solar Terrestrial Science Programme (STSP), the first `cornerstone' of ESA's Horizon 2000 Programme. After the catastrophic Ariane-5 accident on 4 June 1996 which destroyed the four Cluster spacecraft, the European Space Agency Science Programme Committee gave approval to refurbish the spare Cluster spacecraft and make it ready for flight. This new spacecraft, considered to be the first of a new fleet, is called Phoenix. In the meantime various options to repeat the Cluster four-point measurements are being studied. Since Phoenix, as the fifth Cluster spacecraft, will be equipped with the spare Cluster experiments, the instrumentation articles in this book are still appropriate to the new mission. Furthermore, the objectives of the recovery mission, the ground systems, the ground observation program and the theory and modelling efforts all remain unchanged. Thus this series of articles will continue to be essential to the Cluster community and to the general scientific community as the recovery mission is implemented.
