Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the several entrances to the White Mountains, none is more majestic than the Franconia Gateway. The gateway begins in the valley of the Pemigewasset River and reaches through broad meadows, between jagged mountains, alongside quiet pools and cascades of sparkling water, into the wilderness of Franconia Notch and beyond. Altogether, this region contains more historical secrets and hidden treasures than any other part of the White Mountains. The Franconia Gateway opens the way from a new perspective. With nearly one hundred fifty breathtaking views and fascinating stories, this history and guide leads from lore of the Native Americans, explorers, and early entrepreneurs to the logging boom years and the subsequent preservation era on to the days of the artists and poets and, ultimately, the tourists. The journey progresses through the communities of Plymouth, Campton, Thornton, Waterville Valley, Woodstock, and Franconia, and includes all the wonder and mystery of sites such as the Lost River, the Flume, and the Old Man of the Mountain.

Book excerpt: "Franconia" In 1838 the first riverboats came up the Saint Croix River full of adventurous and hardy immigrants who came for the timber, the fertile ground and to start a new life. Many came across the pier at a place called "Franconia" a growing and prosperous river town just south of Taylors Falls, Minnesota by The Dalles on the Saint Croix in Chisago County, Minnesota. A small boat landing is all that is left of a waterfront that rivaled any on the upper Saint Croix River. Ansell Smith's Sawmill and others once fronted the river at Franconia with paddleboats arriving and departing daily. The once thriving river town declined after the railroads came through on November 9th, 1880. It no longer was the only way for immigrants to find their way into this part of Minnesota. The old village of Franconia is hidden away down along the river bluffs just south of Taylors Falls, Minnesota with many Victorian style homes remain and in unbelievably well preserved state. They are occupied mostly in the summer with other homes and cabins replacing the old structures described in this book. Up above the bluffs of the Saint Croix River are modern farms that were homesteads with log homes and barns. Agriculture remains the major economic force in the township with new homes and growing businesses developing every year like the "Franconia Sculpture Park." Although the old village of Franconia is down by the river the same name was given for the township that runs from Highway 8 on the north to the Washington County line on the south. The Saint Croix River on the east and about six miles to the west with Hazelden on the far western border. "Franconia" "An Immigrants Gateway" is a must read to understand what life was like for our ancestors that came and made Franconia their homes. Buy the book today for yourselves to remember and your family to learn from and enjoy. Remember the history of Franconia

The B&M loomed particularly large in the Granite State, where it controlled 96 percent of all tracks and was the primary conveyance through the rugged heart of New England s most formidable mountain range. From the gravity-defying Mount Washington Cog Railway to logging transport trains to the famous Depression-era Snow Train, A History of the Boston & Maine Railroad traces the fascinating history of New England's most renowned railway.

Whether hiking, fishing, skiing, or kayaking, Greg Parsons and Kate Watson have enjoyed experiencing water in all its various forms. But the form that has continuously fascinated them is the rarest and most beautiful one water can take: the waterfall. Full of allure and majesty, waterfalls are dramatic demonstrations of how the landscape changes over time. This greatly expanded edition describes more than 200 new waterfalls and provides extensive trail and road updates. Waterfalls throughout each of the New England states are described according to type, height, trail length and difficulty, water source, and the ideal seasons to visit. They are also rated for their inherent beauty so you can decide how best to spend your time. Chapters are organized by state, and each includes a map to help you easily identify other waterfalls nearby. With special appendixes of the best swimming holes, multi-waterfall day trips, and long-distance waterfall hikes, New England Waterfalls delivers a wealth of information for seekers of these regional treasures.
