Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what a man thinks and what he feels—truly feels—when he is in the process of losing his wife to cancer and is her caregiver? Have you wondered how he feels after he loses his wife to cancer? Nothing prepares him for the overwhelming feelings of loss, of being alone, of anger at God until that very moment is upon him. Yes, there are clinical descriptions of what to expect at the loss of a spouse, such as: You may have feelings of anger, at God or at your spouse for leaving you, feelings of loneliness, abandonment, guilt or despair. These feelings are normal. Is that all? Yet there were no articles or descriptions of the depth of those emotions, the utter desolation of being alone after watching a spouse breathe her last breath, and how painful the loss really can be when it all sinks in, because men are supposed to suck it up, to be strong and move on. This journal describes everything from the mundane day-to-day incidents, concerns, hopes, victories, doubts, and frustrations of being the primary caregiver for a dying wife, to the interactions between the author and his sons—his wife’s two sons that he adopted and his oldest son from a previous marriage. It also describes the utter desolation he felt and ultimately lived through after his wife of twenty-eight years took her last breath on the morning following winter’s first snow of 2010 with only him at her side.

Sam plans to avoid the festivities, but when the first snow of winter arrives, and he and Jasper are trapped alone together at Alderton Hall, they find themselves revisiting old traditions and painful memories together—and discovering that things may not have been quite as either of them thought five years earlier. This story previously appeared in the Gifts For The Season anthology

My stay at Jozankei entered the 4th week. It was a warm day in the daytime recently, but it was a thunderstorm from the dawn on the passing of the cold front. It began to snow in the evening and a snowstorm at midnight. It's so cold that I can not sleep. Vitton wanders alone in a quiet late night spa town. Well, will I be able to endure the cold until morning? Fri., Oct. 21, 2016 at 03:38 AM ... It is Vitton who is experiencing snow camping for the first time in Jozankei, south of Sapporo city, Hokkaido. It is very cold and can not sleep, sometimes frightened by the sound of the snow sliding down from the top of the tent and goes out of the tent. When I wandered with a blurred consciousness, the crucifix appeared before my eyes. Really! Is it? And, the singing voice of the hymns came to be heard. That's right. A passage of "Nearer, My God, to Thee" is ..., Really?

Every Christmas Eve he mourns his losses by returning to the family vacation home in Sunset Harbor, Washington, his family's destination that fateful night. Only this year he's also mourning the loss of his hockey career and wondering what's left to live for. When he finds a kitten starving and half frozen in a foot of snow, he rushes the tiny thing to the local animal hospital. Still reeling from the unexpected loss of her father on Christmas Eve two years ago, Dr. Sarah Whitney opens the door to her clinic and finds a rough and tough professional athlete holding a minuscule kitten in his big hands. Only a miracle can save the frozen creature and only a miracle can heal the devastating losses suffered by both Sarah and Blake. But Christmas is the time for healing and miracles if only you believe and give love a chance.

This book was released on 2022-08-18 with total page 703 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing US literature from 1876 to 1910, this volume aims to account for the period's immense transformations while troubling the ideology of progress that underwrote much of its self-understanding. This volume queries the various forms and formations of post-Reconstruction American literature. It contends that the literature of this period, most often referred to as 'turn-of-the-century' might be more productively oriented by the end of Reconstruction and the haunting aftermath of its emancipatory potential than by the logic of temporal and social advance that underwrote the end of the century and the beginning of the Progressive Era. Acknowledging that nearly all US literature after 1876 might be described as post-Reconstruction, the volume invites readers to reframe this period by asking: under what terms did post-Reconstruction American literature challenge or re-consolidate the 'nation' as an affective, political, and discursive phenomenon? And what kind of alternative pasts and futures did it write into existence?
