Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis challenges the idea that the Great Schism between the Eastern and Western Christian Churches was finalized in 1054. Scholarship has traditionally named the event of the Schism of 1054 as the date which finalized the Schism between the Eastern and Western Churches. Modern scholars have challenged this date and have emphasized the Fourth Crusade's attack on Constantinople in 1204 as the date of the Schism's finality. The goal of this paper is to challenge these interpretations. Instead of putting the finality of the Schism in 1054 or the 1204, this paper will argue that the Schism truly ended two and a half centuries later when the Byzantine Empire fell to Ottoman conquest in 1453.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive and exclusive biography on one of the most pivotal figures of the 20th century: Pope John Paul II. As the spiritual head of more than one billion Catholics and a world statesman of immense stature and influence, Pope John Paul II was a major international figure. Yet he remained a mystery—theologically, politically, and personally. Through unprecedented access to both the Pope himself and those close to him, veteran New York Times correspondent and award-winning author Tad Szulc delivered the definitive biography of John Paul II. This strikingly intimate portrait highlights the Polishness that shapes the Pope's mysticism and pragmatism, while providing a behind-the-scenes look at the significant events of his public and private life. Fascinating and thought-provoking, this biography of Pope John Paul II is vital reading not only for Roman Catholics, but for anyone interested in one of the most important figures of our time. The inside story of the negotiations involving John Paul II, Soviet President Gorbachev, and General Jaruzelski of Poland that led to Poland's and Eastern Europe's transition from communism to democracy John Paul II's secret diplomacy, which resulted in the establishment of relations between the Holy See and Israel The never-before-told story of how the Polish communist regime helped to "make" Karol Wojtyla an archbishop, the key step on his road to the papacy. Fascinating and thought-provoking, this biography of Pope John Paul II is vital reading not only for Roman Catholics, but for anyone interested in one of the most important figures of our time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a revisionist examination of the development of European intellectual culture between the high middle ages and 1550. It draws particular attention to the roles of Marsilio Ficino and Erasmus and analyzes major aspects of the work of Aquinas, Soctus, and Ockham, before moving on to Petrarch, Valla, Pico della Mirandola, the devotio moderna, More, Luther, Calvin, and their contemporaries. It establishes radically new perspectives on the Renaissance and the Reformation and on the continuity between them. "It is an important work and sets forth new constructs about Renaissance and Reformation that must be considered."--Marion Leathers Kuntz, American Historical Review "[Levi's] skillfully navigated intellectual journey is a tour de force."--Choice "A refreshingly broad vision of the period."--Times Literary Supplement "A massive and learned work. . . . [A] great wealth of learning."--History: Reviews of New Books
