Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fair Dinkum Economy offers an easy-to-read, easy-to-understand economic guide for everyone. It explores the recent decline in the living standards of developed countries and negative effects of the swing in the balance of power to the Asian and Indian regions. Author Robert Gibson maintains that the way this economic change is happening will not benefit any country. What’s more, there is an alternate path we can take that could lead us to a better, more equal world. It is not a nice thought that the twentieth century may have seen the peak in the status and strength of Western Nations. If we keep going the way we are, however, that is what history may record. We need to be encouraged to present our ideas because debate is healthy. New ideas stimulate thinking along different lines, about different possibilities. The Fair Dinkum Economy presents an idea—a plan that is not just about what is good for the richest nations, but that instead works with the global trading system for the betterment of all mankind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formidable challenges confront Australia and its human settlements: the mega-metro regions, major and provincial cities, coastal, rural and remote towns. The key drivers of change and major urban vulnerabilities have been identified and principal among them are resource-constraints, such as oil, water, food, skilled labour and materials, and carbon-constraints, linked to climate change and a need to transition to renewable energy, both of which will strongly shape urban development this century. Transitions identifies 21st century challenges to the resilience of Australia’s cities and regions that flow from a range of global and local influences, and offers a portfolio of solutions to these critical problems and vulnerabilities. The solutions will require fundamental transitions in many instances: to our urban infrastructures, to our institutions and how they plan for the future, and perhaps most of all to ourselves in terms of our lifestyles and consumption patterns. With contributions from 92 researchers – all leaders in their respective fields – this book offers the expertise to chart pathways for a sustainability transition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does Australia, a nation with one of the world's best economies, have such a dim view of its own performance? Why does it see itself as worse off than some of the basket-case economies of southern Europe? How did a country that was smart enough to avoid recession and mass unemployment despite a global meltdown get so down on itself? In Glory Daze Jim Chalmers argues that the combination of hyper-partisanship and self-serving incentives in politics have resulted in a deficit of national self-esteem. This insider account provides a unique perspective on national identity. Chalmers concludes that unless a stop is put to the poisonous politics of recent years, Australia runs the risk of squandering existing national advantages and compromising our ability to tackle the challenges of the future.

But todays headlines continue to highlight the Israeli-Palestinian struggle and Israels quest for peace. Even so, another struggle is quietly rampant within world Jewry: the fight to secure Israels future. Offering a unique perspective on this issue, The Fair Dinkum Jew serves as an informative primer to show how the Abrahamic Covenant is vital to Israels survival. Author Allan Russell Juriansz discusses the three great pillars of this CovenantLand, Torah, and Messiahand shows how Israels only hope for security lies within these terms. Juriansz breaks down years of Jewish history to prove the relevance of Judaism to Jewish existence and future in terms of the Abrahamic Covenant. He then discusses diff erent aspects of the Arab infi ltration and occupation of Palestine and examines the current confl ict between Jews and Arab Palestinians in terms of the post-1967 borders. In addition, he off ers potential solutions for peace that could possibly lead to stability within the Middle East. The Fair Dinkum Jew issues a stirring call for Israels need to believe in and defend its political, national, and religious integrity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social and economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and of extreme climate events have brought into sharp relief the serious deficiencies of our political economies. The dominant global ideology of neoliberalism and its architects and beneficiaries are responsible for this. Bilateral development assistance is an integral part of the neoliberal grand design. However, while the deficiencies of neoliberalism have been starkly exposed by the pandemic, its collapse is unlikely in the short-term. Much bilateral assistance will therefore continue to be self-serving. Within these confines, and on the basis of a sharply critical analysis of the functioning of technical assistance at the point of the design and delivery of programmes and projects, this book identifies crucial supply-side nodes of power and influence where feasible and relatively straight-forward ‘functional’ reforms - strategy, structure, selection, training - would make genuinely developmental results for recipients more likely and enhance donor interests at the same time. It argues that more authentic, empathetic, and altruistic technical assistance will be essential to bringing this about. The arguments are supported by primary, published evidence gathered by the author during 18 years of full-time employment as a team leader or programme manager of technical assistance programmes. The book will be of interest to students of development management, development economics, political economy and international relations, as well as policy makers, development practitioners and supply- and demand-side government officials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the changing digital geographies of the Anthropocene. It analyses how technologies are providing new opportunities for communication and connection, while simultaneously deepening existing problems associated with isolation, global inequity and environmental harm. By offering a reading of digital technologies as ‘more-than-real’, the author argues that the productive and destructive possibilities of digital geographies are changing important aspects of human and non-human worlds. Like the more-than-human notion and how it emphasises interconnections of humans and non-humans in the world, the more-than-real inverts the diminishing that accompanies use of the terms ‘virtual’ and ‘immaterial’ as applied to digital spaces. Digital geographies are fluid, amorphous spaces made of contradictory possibilities in this Anthropocene moment. By sharing experiences of people involved in trying to improve digital geographies, this book offers stories of hope and possibility alongside stories of grief and despair. The more-than-real concept can help us understand such work – by feminists, digital rights activists, disability rights activists, environmentalists and more. Drawing on case studies from around the world, this book will appeal to academics, university students, and activists who are keen to learn from other people’s efforts to change digital geographies, and who also seek to remake digital geographies.
