Book excerpt: This thesis considers the evolution and dynamic behaviour of the northern Uummannaq Ice Stream System (UISS), a large ice stream which extended to the Greenland shelf edge during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The Uummannaq region has been shown to be dominated by areas of selective linear erosion (SLE) and areal scour. Over multiple glacial cycles, enhanced by favourable geology and uplift, SLE controlled the formation of a confluent fjord system which triggered the onset and development of the UISS. At the LGM, northern UISS ice thicknesses reached 1400-1968 m a.s.l., comparable to data from the southern UISS. However, in the north, thicknesses were not sufficient to overtop fjord confines, with ice flow remaining topographically controlled. The presence of thick, fast ice flowing ice in the onset zone suggests that subglacial conditions within the study area were characterised by intense basal sliding. The evolution of bedforms (roches moutonnées and whalebacks) was influenced by basal ice dynamics, but bedrock type, joints and bedding were also critical controls on bedform morphometry. Deglaciation following the LGM began on the outer shelf by 14.9 kyr, with increased air temperature, rising relative sea-level and bathymetric over-deepening driving the UISS to the outer edge of coastal fjords by 11.4-11.0 kyr. Geochronological data demonstrate that the retreat rate of the northern and southern UISS became highly asynchronous during the early-Holocene. In the south, topographic constrictions stabilised the ice from 11.0-9.3 kyr, before it retreated beyond its present ice margin at 8.7 kyr. Ice in the north became pinned at the mouth of Rink-Karrat Isfjord between 11.6-6.9 kyr, remaining stable through the Holocene Thermal Maximum, demonstrating the ability of topography to override climate and sea-level drivers. Geomorphological and sedimentological evidence has demonstrated that the Svartenhuk Peninsula in the northern Uummannaq region, previously cited as an LGM ice-free enclave, was overrun by ice during the LGM. Ice was sourced from the Svartenhuk interior, and expanded radially to the present coastline. This is contrary to existing work, and suggests there may be a need to reassess the evidence for interstadial, high sea-level conditions throughout Greenland.

Book excerpt: Ice streams drain ice sheets rapidly and are key regulators of their mass balance in both palaeo and contemporary settings. Present day ice streams can be identified, and their short-term activity monitored, by measuring the surface velocity of ice sheets. However, in order to understand their long-term behaviour, reconstructions of their activity in palaeo-ice sheets are necessary. Numerous palaeo-ice streams have been identified in the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) and this has considerably refined our understanding of its dynamic behaviour and links to the ocean-climate system. In the north-west sector of the LIS, ice streaming has been hypothesised but detailed mapping of the area has not been carried out and so our understanding of palaeo-ice streaming is limited compared to other areas. This thesis presents a new ice sheet reconstruction of the north-west sector of the LIS that incorporates ice stream activity and pro-glacial lake evolution. Mapping and analysis was carried out using a range of remote sensing imagery and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), which enabled widespread, rapid and systematic coverage of the 800,000 km2 study area. More than 95,000 bedforms have been mapped, including glacial lineations, eskers, moraines and palaeo-channels. These data permit the identification and classification of 272 flow-sets which have been dated using an existing 14C database and relative cross-cutting relationships. Flow-sets are used to construct a robust and self-consistent ice sheet reconstruction, incorporating the activity of ice streams at a temporal resolution of up to 250-500 years. The reconstruction reveals major changes in ice sheet configuration during Late Wisconsinan deglaciation and indicates that margin retreat was complex and dominated by the dynamic spatial and temporal evolution of seven ice stream systems. These ice streams were not synchronous but a peak in their activity occurred between 15 and 13 ka. Their location and behaviour was influenced by the availability of soft sediments, but their temporal switching was likely controlled by sub-glacial meltwater routing and ice piracy. Large proglacial lakes developed during deglaciaton but their evolution did not appear to control ice stream activity, as observed elsewhere in the ice sheet. However, major palaeo-channels are consistent with a previously hypothesised north-west drainage route for Glacial Lake Agassiz.

The objective of ASI (2010) was to develop a small set of Arctic specific social indicators that as a collective would help facilitate the tracking and monitoring of change in human development in the Arctic. ASI indicators were developed for six domains that are considered prominent aspects of human development in the Arctic by residents in the Arctic: Health and Population; Material Wellbeing; Education; Cultural Wellbeing; Contact with Nature; and Fate Control. The objective of the present volume of ASI is to present and discuss the findings of the work on measuring the set of recommended ASI indicators; to conduct a series of regional case studies to illustrate and test the strength and applicability of these indicators; to identify and describe data challenges for the Arctic region specifically in relation to these Arctic specific indicators and to draw conclusions about the ability of ASI to track changes in human development; and to formulate policy relevant conclusions for the long-term monitoring of Arctic human development. The core content of ASI-II is a set of five carefully selected case studies, which form the basis for drawing conclusions about the applicability of the ASI indicators and for formulating policy relevant conclusions. Case studies are performed for Sakha Republic (Yakutia); the West-Nordic Region; Northwest Territories; Inuit Regions of Alaska; and the Inuit World, with the Survey of Living Conditions in the Arctic (SLiCA) used to augment ASI. Findings on the state and changes in Arctic human development and wellbeing are presented. Based on our analysis and conclusions from the five case studies the framework for an ASI monitoring system is introduced. We argue that the long-term monitoring of human development in the Arctic would be greatly facilitated by the regular and frequent collection and reporting of relevant data, including those required for the proposed small set of ASI indicators.
