With Each Other, and 2. With Josephus The following pages consist, in part, of the substance of two Sermons which I had last year occasion to deliver from the University Pulpit in Cambridge, the one in English, the other in Latin, exhibiting Undesigned Coincidences between the several writings of the Evangelists, or between those writings and Josephus. The materials, which might be considered supplementary to Lardner and Paley, I had collected, from time to time, as independent arguments for the Veracity of the Gospels and Acts, without any determinate purpose in so doing, beyond my own immediate satisfaction. Thoughts which have been thus progressively accumulating, I cannot now always trace to their beginnings, however I may desire it. But an attentive perusal of the New Testament, and of the Jewish Historian, has furnished me with nearly all of them. At the same time, it is possible that a hint from a commentator may have suggested one; that another I may have met with, originally applied to a different purpose, though here made subservient to the Evidences; that a third may, without my recollecting it, have been already urged under a similar form, and for the same object. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Key to the Narrative of the Acts of the Apostles IT has been well said that the religious know ledge vouchsafed before the Christian era was like the gradual dawning of light, which leads us to' anticipate the rising of the sun; that Christ's advent, when at length He came in humiliation, was like a sunrise obscured by cloud; and that only when the 'rushing mighty wind' of Pente cost had blown aside those earlier mists, could men behold Him, as indeed He is, the source of all their light and joy. Therefore in the 'acts of the Apostles, ' much more than in the Gospels, have we Christ revealed to us in the fulness of His strength, reigning, as He still reigns, 'at the right hand of power.' And it may well be that St. Luke meant to imply this in that Opening phrase of his 'second treatise, ' where he alludes to his Gospel as containing but the beginning: of all that Jesus did and taught. The Apostles had received a promise that they should see 'greater things than these' hereafter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Acts of the Holy Apostles Confirmed From Other Authors, and Considered as Full Evidence of the Truth of Christianity: With a Prefatory Discourse Upon the Nature of That Evidence Shall a man grudge his pains, and spare himself the thought and study, to be satisfied of the truth of the religion he pro fesses? Can he be too solicitous, too diligent, in an affair of the utmost consequence? No, certainly; his labour and fatigue in the inquiry ought to bear some proportion to the great moment of the truth he is seeking; till he is firmly persuaded that he has the justest reason to give his assent to it, and is fully determined to be governed by it. For should we he never so strongly convinced of the truth of religion, but at the same time will not form our lives agreeably thereto, we might as well have omitted the pains we were at in examining its evidence, and confirming ourselves in the belief of it, because it cannot be of any service to us to see our way to happiness, if we refuse to walk in it. Forasmuch as the religion we have been educated in is that delivered down to us by Christ and his disciples as revealed from heaven, it is our concern most certainly well to consider and duly to weigh its pretensions that if the proofs there are for its being true and genuine are substantial, and carry conviction with them, we may with all cheerfulness per form the things thereby enjoined, and with pleasure wait for the glory and felicity therein promised. The first thing that offers itself to our thoughts, in the trial of a revelation pretending to come from above, is, whether it be worthy of God and suited to the condition of man. If it teaches doctrines contradictory to the nature of God, or to that reason with which he has endued us; if it recommends examples or enjoins precepts inconsistent with the moral attributes of the divine Being, or the eternal rule of right reason; if it insist on the practice of such things as tend manifestly to the hurt and detriment of man, and to the preventing his happiness; we may justly and warrantably conclude that it is not from heaven. But the more fully we examine, and the more thoroughly we comprehend the Christian scheme, the more firmly shall we be persuaded that it was fitting to be revealed by God, and received by men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Contents and Origin of the Acts of the Apostles, Vol. 1: Critically Investigated The present work of Professor Zeller is so well known as to need no introduction. Following out the hints of Schnecken-burger, the importance of which had been apprehended by Baur and Schwegler, the distinguished author wrote a series of elaborate articles in the Tubingen Journal. These were subsequently revised, for the purpose of a separate work. The publication thence resulting is an epoch-making one, evincing the highest critical ability, and propounding a tendency which actuated the writer of the Acts, in harmony with the leading opinions of the Tubingen School. The impossibility of reconciling the Apostle Paul's statements and conduct, as seen in his Epistles, with those in the Acts, and the conciliatory motive which prompted and moulded the latter, are set forth with great skill. As the work was published in 1854, it has been thought desirable to give a specimen of the later literature on the same book of the New Testament, for which purpose Overbeck's Introduction to his edition of De Welte's Commentary has been selected. That the views of Zeller are substantially correct can hardly be doubted, though some details are perhaps pushed to an extreme. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Evidences of the New Testament SO accustomed are we to regard the New Tes tament as one book, the work of a single writer, that we are apt to forget and overlook the variety of its contents. It consists of twenty-seven sep arate and independent documents, composed by eight or nine different persons at very different times and under the most varied circumstances. The works of the writers of the Old Testament fall under the head of history proper. They set before us primarily and mainly the history of a nation. In the New Testament all this is changed. The authors of the Gospels are not in any sense historians of their nation. They are biographers of Christ. Even the writer of the Acts of the Apostles confines himself to the doings of those whose business it was to spread abroad the doc trines taught by Christ throughout the world. The points, therefore, where the documents of the New Testament touch upon history proper are not direct, but indirect, and the allusions are and must be incidental. But for this very reason they are extremely important as respects their evidential value. Why? Because, in the first place, to maintain accuracy in the wide field of incidental allusions is a matter of the utmost diffi culty, and no one but an honest, truthful writer would venture on such a perilous experiment at all. Because, in the second place, historical ac curacy in reference to minute incidental allusions is utterly at variance with the mythical spirit, of which the narrative contained in the New Testa ment is sometimes affirmed to be the product. If the whole story is a myth, fabricated ab its composers would have had no object in maintain ing historical accuracy at all, or in being careful that their facts agreed with the testimony of con temporary classical writers. On the contrary, he refers to the city as if still in its grandeur, speaks of the Temple services as if still being observed, and alludes to individual localities, such, e.g., as Solomon's Porch, as if existing and well known. Had the terrible tragedies accompany ing the siege and fall of Jerusalem taken place, there would almost certainly have been some reference _to them. We know that Jerusalem was destroyed in the year a.d. 70. It is therefore concluded that the Book of Acts was written before that date. It has been noticed further that the writer makes no mention of the death of the Apostle Paul. If he had known that the Apostle had actually laid down his life for the Gospel, he could hardly have avoided mention of the fact. Now St. Paul was martyred at Rome probably about the year A. D. 67 or 68, and we therefore conclude that this Book was written before that date. The absence, moreover, of any reference to the writings of St. Paul or to those heresies which disturbed the peace of the Church in the later years of the first century confirms this view. It is believed, therefore, that the Book was written between the years a.d. 63 and 70, and the general Opinion is that it was written at Rome. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostles: Including the Period From the Death of Jesus Until the Greater Missions of Paul The first volume of these Beginnings of Christian History 1 has followed the course of events as far as the death and burial of Jesus. We have now to take up the narrative at this point, namely, Saturday, the 4th of April, A. D. 33. For some time yet it will be, in a way, a continuation of the Life of Jesus. After those months of intoxicating joy, during which the great Founder laid the groundwork for a new order in human affairs, these succeeding years are the most decisive in the world's history. The same Jesus who, by the sacred spark of life which he kindled in the heart of a few friends, created the most august of human institutions, still stirs and renews the hearts of men, stamping that divine seal upon them all. Under that in uence, ever active and victorious 'over death, we shall see confirmed faith in the resurrection, in the agency of the Holy Spirit, in the gift of tongues, in the authority of the Church. We shall trace the organising of the Church at Jerusalem, its first trials, its early conquests, the primitive missions proceeding from its bosom. We Shall follow the swift progress of Christianity through Syria as far as Antioch, where a second capital is founded, in one sense more important than Jerusalem, and destined to supplant it.
