Book Synopsis Byron and John Murray by : Mary O'Connell
Download or read book Byron and John Murray written by Mary O'Connell and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-05 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Byron and John Murray: A Poet and His Publisher is the first comprehensive account of the relationship between Byron and the man who published his poetry for over ten years. It is commonly seen as a paradox of Byron’s literary career that the liberal poet was published by a conservative publishing house. It is less of a paradox when, as this book illustrates, we see John Murray as a competitive, innovative publisher who understood how to deal with his most famous author. The book begins by charting the early years of Murray’s success prior to the publication of Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, and describes Byron’s early engagement with the literary marketplace. The book describes in detail how Byron became one of Murray’s authors, before documenting the success of their commercial association and the eventual and protracted disintegration of their relationship. Byron wrote more letters to John Murray than anyone else and their correspondence represents a fascinating dialogue on the nature of Byron’s poetry, and particularly the nature of his fame. It is the central argument of this book that Byron’s ambivalent attitude towards professional writing and popular literature can be illuminated through an understanding of his relationship with John Murray.
Book Synopsis A Visitor's Guide to Jane Austen's England by : Sue Wilkes
Download or read book A Visitor's Guide to Jane Austen's England written by Sue Wilkes and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Wilkes makes the world of Jane Austen come to life . . . from travel to fashion, shopping, leisure, and, of course, finding a mate” (Britain Express). Immerse yourself in the vanished world inhabited by Austen’s contemporaries. Packed with detail and anecdotes, this is an intimate exploration of how the middle and upper classes lived from 1775, the year of Austen’s birth, to the coronation of George IV in 1820. Sue Wilkes skillfully conjures up all aspects of daily life within the period, drawing on contemporary diaries, illustrations, letters, novels, travel literature, and archives. Were all unmarried affluent men really “in want of a wife”? Where would a young lady seek adventure? Would “taking the waters” at Bath and other spas kill or cure you? Was Lizzy Bennet bitten by bed-bugs while traveling? What would you wear to a country ball or a dance at Almack’s? Would Mr. Darcy have worn a corset? What hidden horrors lurked in elegant Regency houses? “A delight. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that paints such a vivid picture of daily life in late 18th and early 19th century England. It makes a perfect companion for Austen’s beloved novels.” —The Heritage Traveller “A thoroughly engaging—and very informative—‘eyewitness’ guide to everything from medical matters to modes of travel.” —Joceline Bury, Jane Austen’s Regency World “Written as if to a first-time traveler in the Regency . . . an inviting read . . . a perfect gift for every Janeite friend and family member.” —Austenprose “A worthy contribution to the field of Austen social history and uses the mundane realities of life to illuminate the reader’s experience.” —Sensibilities

Book Synopsis Shakespeare in Swahililand by : Edward Wilson-Lee
Download or read book Shakespeare in Swahililand written by Edward Wilson-Lee and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with Victorian-era expeditions in which the Complete Works of Shakespeare were often the sole reading material carried into the interior of the continent, the Bard became a vital touchstone both for colonizers and the colonized. His plays were printed by liberated slaves as some of the first texts in Swahili, were performed by Indian laborers while they built the Uganda railroad, were used to argue for native rights, and were translated by intellectuals, revolutionaries, and independence-movement leaders. Wilson-Lee tallies Shakespeare's unlikely yet profound emergence and continued presence in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, and South Sudan, and discovers overwhelming evidence that Shakespeare's works provide a key insight into cultural development throughout the region. -- Adapted from jacket flap.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection explores the role of martial masculinities in shaping nineteenth-century British culture and society in a period framed by two of the greatest wars the world had ever known. It offers a fresh, interdisciplinary perspective on an emerging field of study and draws on historical, literary, visual and musical sources to demonstrate the centrality of the military and its masculine dimensions in the shaping of Victorian and Edwardian personal and national identities. Focusing on both the experience of military service and its imaginative forms, it examines such topics as bodies and habits, families and domesticity, heroism and chivalry, religion and militarism, and youth and fantasy. This collection will be required reading for anyone interested in the cultures of war and masculinity in the long nineteenth century.
Book Synopsis The Reception of Classical German Literature in England, 1760-1860, Volume 10 by : John Boening
Download or read book The Reception of Classical German Literature in England, 1760-1860, Volume 10 written by John Boening and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extensive scope of this collection means that this documentary record of the reception of German literature in England is a valuable scholarly resource. One of the most important features of British literary and intellectual history over the past 250 years is the influence of German literature. From the second half of the 18th Century, through the first decades of the 19th, German books and ideas attracted, then gained the attention of a nation. Despite the acknowledged importance of the influence on writers such as Coleridge and Carlyle the subject, though often alluded to, was rarely studied. This collection provides a guidebook through the masses of periodical and allows the English side of the Anglo-German literary relationship to be explored in detail. In order to make the collection useful to scholars with a wide range of interest, it has been divided into three parts: Part 1 is a chronological presentation of commentary on German literature in general. It also contains collective reviews of multiple German authors, notices of important anthologies and reactions to influential works about Germany and its culture. Part 2 collects reviews of 18th Century individual German authors and Part 3 is devoted to the English reception of Goethe and Schiller. Parts 2 & 3 contain cross-references to the collective reviews of Part 1. Containing over 200 British serials and articles and reviews from all the major English literary periodicals, the collection also includes a broad sampling of opinion from the more general magazines, including some popular religious publications.
