This book was released on 1993 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Community has long been the largest trading bloc in the world. It is also on the way to becoming the world's largest integrated economic zone. Its trade, aid and development cooperation policies are therefore of great importance to developing countries. At the same time, the developing countries have continued to be of interest to the Community, both as outlets for its exports and capital investments and as sources of raw materials. This 1993 book analyses and evaluates European Community trade, aid and industrial policies towards developing countries - their origin, main features, logic, evolution and effectiveness in reaching the goals assigned to them. The author sums up the state of Europe's development policies by describing them as regional in scope, colonial in geographical emphasis, discriminatory in their effects and lacking in overall cogency. This incisive re-evaluation illustrates the different strategies the EC countries might pursue in their relations with the outside world as they progress towards fuller economic integration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New European Community is the first systematic, book-length discussion of the major political institutions of the European Community (EC) after the transformation of the 1987 Single European Act, itself a surprise and a mystery whose effects are unraveled here.Professors Keohane and Hoffmann open the volume by placing the evolution of the new European Community into broad, theoretical perspective. Their expert contributors?including highly regarded international scholars, a judge of the European Court of Justice, and a long-term British politician?present engaging overviews of the process at work in major EC events and institutions. The centerpiece of the volume, Peter Ludlow's chapter on the European Commission, lays out all of the systems and actors in the emerging EC and shows their direct connection with problems of Community development and integration.Filled with examples, illustrations, anecdotes, and valuable data, The New European Community will be indispensable for all students and scholars of international relations and European studies as well as for those in business and government who want to understand the European Community before and beyond 1992.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication deals with the European dimension of tort law. It provides a critical analysis of the acquis communautaire, asking if and to what extent the provisions and case law in the field of tort law are based on a conclusive system and are in accord with the national legal systems. It thus evaluates whether the acquis communautaire form the beginning of a comprehensive and coherent EC tort law or if the single directives and regulations are contradictory and lack a general concept that is yet to be found. To gain an overview of ‘EC Tort Law’ certain provisions and decisions were analysed by a group of authors under thirteen elements that form the basis of tort law e.g. fault/strict liability, causation, damage, damages and limitation of actions. An analysis of these aspects was then undertaken by another group of authors each focusing on their respective legal families within the European Union. The publication also contains a section on terminological issues in EC tort law.

Book excerpt: The inside story of the European Fund for Strategic Investments from 2015 to 2020 told through interviews with the Managing Director, Deputy Managing Director, members of the Investment Committee and final beneficiaries across Europe. The architects of this €500 billion-plus programme, the head of the EU bank and the president of the European Commission, describe the genesis of this financial pillar of the Investment Plan for Europe. Then the people who ran one of the biggest economic stimulus programmes in history detail how they did it—and what the lessons are for policymakers responding to new crises, including the economic shock caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The European Fund for Strategic Investments has been one of the good news stories to emerge in a decade of economic uncertainty. It has gone well beyond its highly ambitious target of €500 billion in mobilised investments. The Juncker Plan has made a strong contribution to the 14 million jobs created in the EU between 2015 and 2020. It has become a success in co-financing projects that otherwise might not have been carried through. It has also charted the path towards new ways of financing. This is not only the case in relatively conventional areas, such as infrastructure, but also in sectors like research and innovation or the contribution to climate change mitigation. This is exactly what makes EFSI so ground-breaking: responding to the needs of the market through continuous financial innovation. The principle of the European Fund for Strategic Investments is here to stay. It has paved the way for its successor, the InvestEU programme, which is to be deployed under the 2021-2027 multiannual financial framework. This publication details why the programme was such a success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction of the European Community (EC) has widely been understood as the product of either economic self-interest or dissatisfaction with the nation-state system. In Europe United, Sebastian Rosato challenges these conventional explanations, arguing that the Community came into being because of balance of power concerns. France and the Federal Republic of Germany—the two key protagonists in the story—established the EC at the height of the cold war as a means to balance against the Soviet Union and one another. More generally, Rosato argues that international institutions, whether military or economic, largely reflect the balance of power. In his view, states establish institutions in order to maintain or increase their share of world power, and the shape of those institutions reflects the wishes of their most powerful members. Rosato applies this balance of power theory of cooperation to several other cooperative ventures since 1789, including various alliances and trade pacts, the unifications of Italy and Germany, and the founding of the United States. Rosato concludes by arguing that the demise of the Soviet Union has deprived the EC of its fundamental purpose. As a result, further moves toward political and military integration are improbable, and the economic community is likely to unravel to the point where it becomes a shadow of its former self.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first major assessment of EC decision-making at the highest levels for ten years, Emil Kirchner examines the Council Presidency's role in European integration. The author demonstrates how the EC Council Presidency plays a crucial role in the integration process enhanced by the Single European Act and the two Intergovernmental Conferences on EMU and Political Union. He evaluates the balance and distribution of power between national and Community actors, and asks whether the Council Presidency is primarily an instrument to maintain national control of EC decision-making, rather than a device for promoting integration. He sheds light on the negotiations which led to the SEA and the two Intergovernmental Conferences, and argues for a new interpretation of the relationship between the EC and its constituent states. EC decision-making is not characterised by a transfer of powers from the national to the EC level, but by a sharing of competences between national and Community institutions and a 'pooling of sovereignties' among member governments that is analogous to 'co-operative federalism'. Decision-making in the European Community will be vital reading for political scientists and students interested in the EC; and for all those seeking to understand European integration, potentially the 1990s' most important political development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over half a century old and continuing to grow in strength and authority, the European Union consists of 25 member states_with more on the waiting list_and a population of 450 million people. Its influence in foreign and domestic affairs and human rights and law reaches far beyond its earlier fields of trade and politics. From the initial ideas about integration leading to the Treaty of Paris and the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community to the current reflection on the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe, The A to Z of the European Union encompasses the most basic elements of the EU and the components that have emerged as a result of them. Through the use of maps, photographs, a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on topics such as leaders, personalities, institutions, enlargements, member states, internal policies, external relations, basic theories, treaties, and law, this dictionary tells a clear and complete story about the European Union that will assist those with greater interest in understanding it.

Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1973, analyses the European Community in a global perspective. It asks and answers two main questions: what does the European Community mean to the masses of the world, and what does it mean to the world community in general? Most critical studies of the EC were made from an internal point of view, and this book is rare in having an external perspective. The author discussed the EC with diverse audiences in 16 countries, and his analyses are invaluable in putting the European project in an international context.
