Book excerpt: The set to which this volume belongs is informally entitled "The Eternal Series," because each volume of the set unfolds an aspect of the reality of God's relationship with humanity that reaches from eternity past to eternity future. The formal title of the series is "An Evangelical Introduction to Reformational Theology." Here are the volume titles: Part I: Scripture: The Revealed Source For Theology I/1 The Eternal Word: God Speaking To Us I/2 The Eternal Torah: Living Under God Part II: God: The Personal Source Behind Theology II/1 The Eternal God: God Revealing Himself To Us II/2 The Eternal Christ: God With Us II/3 The Eternal Spirit: God Living In Us Part III: Redemption: The Christ-Centered Heart of Theology III/1 The Eternal Purpose: Living In Christ III/2 Eternal Righteousness: Living Before God III/3 Eternal Salvation: Christ Dying For Us III/4 Eternal Life: Christ Living In Us Part IV: Consummation: The Lived Shape of Theology IV/1 The Eternal People: God in Relation To Israel IV/2 The Eternal Covenant: Living With God IV/3 The Eternal Kingdom: Living Under Christ Part V: Method: The Comprehensive Foundation of Theology V/1 Eternal Truth: The Prolegomena of Theology These volumes have been written for the informed Christian who is somewhat familiar with both the Bible and Christian theology. As you will learn in these volumes, that order-first Bible and then theology-is crucially important. So too is the distinction (but not the separation!) between these two: the Bible is not theology, and theology is not the Bible. Both following that order and honoring that distinction are prerequisites for healthy, charitable, and enduring Christianity. Dr. Willem J. Ouweneel is a Dutch author whose three doctorates-one each in biology, philosophy, and theology-rank him among the premier Bible scholars of this generation, and equip him with breadth of vision and depth of insight. When these volumes are read alongside an open Bible, the patient reader will acknowledge the authority of the claims being defended. The reader's certitude will ultimately come to rest, not in any particular theological system or model, but in the inspired, infallible Word of God, and more importantly, in the God of that Word. As such, this entire series and these volumes are fresh and faithful reformulations of the essence of biblical faith and life as that was transmitted throughout the centuries, was rediscovered in the Reformation, and has come to be known as Reformational theology: sola Scriptura, sola gratia, sola fide, solus Christus, soli Deo gloria.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER #1 bestselling author Lisa Scottoline offers a sweeping and shattering epic of historical fiction fueled by shocking true events, the tale of a love triangle that unfolds in the heart of Rome...in the creeping shadow of fascism. What war destroys, only love can heal. Elisabetta, Marco, and Sandro grow up as the best of friends despite their differences. Elisabetta is a feisty beauty who dreams of becoming a novelist; Marco the brash and athletic son in a family of professional cyclists; and Sandro a Jewish mathematics prodigy, kind-hearted and thoughtful, the son of a lawyer and a doctor. Their friendship blossoms to love, with both Sandro and Marco hoping to win Elisabetta's heart. But in the autumn of 1937, all of that begins to change as Mussolini asserts his power, aligning Italy's Fascists with Hitler's Nazis and altering the very laws that govern Rome. In time, everything that the three hold dear--their families, their homes, and their connection to one another--is tested in ways they never could have imagined. As anti-Semitism takes legal root and World War II erupts, the threesome realizes that Mussolini was only the beginning. The Nazis invade Rome, and with their occupation come new atrocities against the city's Jews, culminating in a final, horrific betrayal. Against this backdrop, the intertwined fates of Elisabetta, Marco, Sandro, and their families will be decided, in a heartbreaking story of both the best and the worst that the world has to offer. Unfolding over decades, Eternal is a tale of loyalty and loss, family and food, love and war--all set in one of the world's most beautiful cities at its darkest moment. This moving novel will be forever etched in the hearts and minds of readers.

Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. The Eternal Dissident offers rare insight into one of the most inspiring and controversial Reform rabbis of the twentieth century, Leonard Beerman, who was renowned both for his eloquent and challenging sermons and for his unrelenting commitment to social action. Beerman was a man of powerful word and action—a probing intellectual and stirring orator, as well as a nationally known opponent of McCarthyism, racial injustice, and Israeli policy in the occupied territories. The shared source of Beerman’s thought and activism was the moral imperative of the Hebrew prophets, which he believed bestowed upon the Jewish people their role as the “eternal dissident.” This volume brings Beerman to life through a selection of his most powerful writings, followed by commentaries from notable scholars, rabbis, and public personalities that speak to the quality and ongoing relevance of Beerman’s work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The psalms--the prayers of the chosen people, the prayers of the people of God--have a spontaneity and timeless pertinence which is unique. They are an integral part of Christian liturgies; yet they pose difficulties for many who sense that they have sprung from a cultural milieu which is totally alien to our own. This problem can only be solved by a careful study of their origins, their literary structures, their content, and their intent. A vast literature has grown up around the psalter. But modern biblical discoveries, research, and scholarship have opened the way to a greater understanding and finer appreciation of the inspired prayers. The author, one of the leading exegetes of our time, has produced a monumental and comprehensive work which reflects his vast research and erudite judgment. The scholar and the biblical student will find this thorough treatment invaluable. And educated men of all religions, who share a common invaluable scriptural tradition, should also find it essentially helpful and enlightening. This many-faceted work clearly illustrates that biblical scholarship knows no denominational boundaries. The psalter is a bridge of prayer in this ecumenical age, and readers will find the author's insights and analyses most helpful in making the psalms more vital in their lives and a more unifying bond in man's search for God in our time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What this book argues for in today’s twenty-first-century church was a hallmark doctrine of old school Presbyterianism of the nineteenth century: the doctrine of the spirituality of the church. Which eschatological approach one uses will affect one’s understanding of the nature and practice of missions. Mission creep—the expansion of the church’s original objective(s)—is a real concern for the contemporary church, and how one understands eschatology affects one’s focus on missions. The mission of the church is narrow (Matt 28:18–20), and the calling of individual believers is broad (Rom 12:1–2). If we fail to make this crucial distinction, the church’s mission will lose its biblical emphasis. And if the church’s mission is lost, then the authority structure, instantiated in the offices and officers of the church, devolves into illegitimacy, because the church is no longer advancing the kingdom ends she was mandated to do by King Jesus. If the institutional church fails to do this, we will be relinquishing and abdicating and abandoning our most singular and particular and peculiar kingdom of God vocation: the harvesting, gathering, and perfecting of the saints.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely regarded as the twentieth century s greatest theologian, Karth Barth refocused the task of Christian theology and demonstrated its relevance to every domain of human life, from the spiritual to the social to the political. It is precisely the broad sweep of Barth s theology that makes a book like The Great Passion of such great value a succinct yet comprehensive introduction to Barth s entire theological program. Of the many people who write on the life and thought of Karl Barth, Eberhard Busch is uniquely placed. A world-renowned expert on Barth s theology, he also served as Barth s personal assistant from 1965 to 1968. As Busch explains, one cannot fully understand Barth the theologian apart from understanding Barth the man. In this book he weaves doctrine and biography into a superb presentation of Barth s complete work. Busch s purpose in this introduction is to guide readers through the main themes of the multivolume Church Dogmatics against the horizon of our own times and problems. In ten sections Busch clearly explains Barth s views on all of the major subject areas of systematic theology: the nature of revelation, Israel and Christology, the Trinity and the doctrine of predestination, the problem of religion, gospel and law, creation, salvation, the Holy Spirit, ecclesiology, and eschatology. A distinctive feature of the book is the way Busch lets Barth speak for himself, often through surprising quotations and paraphrases. Busch also shows how Barth s writing should be read as a dialogue, constantly and consciously engaging other voices past and present, both inside and outside the church. Most important, The Great Passion demonstrates that Barth s thought is still remarkably helpful today.
