Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Egypt, from the Old to the New Kingdom, enigmatic texts were created on the basis of non-standardized lists of characters and phonetic signs, the exact principles of which are still unclear to this day. For the first time, this study examines in detail the three most comprehensive known inscription texts from the New Kingdom, which were discovered in the tombs of Tutenchamun, Ramses VI and Ramses IX. Darnell shows that these three texts have a theological, iconographic and formal connection, and calls them collectively the "Book of the Solar-Osirian Unity". Differentiated and lively, he presents the content and theological peculiarities of these texts that deal with the afterlife with each other and in relation to other enigmatic texts of the new as well as the Middle and Old Kingdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a result of my childhood questions about myself as I wondered how did I appear to be myself suddenly with hardly any past recollection and I wondered about my understanding of my own experiences in my life and things of that nature. I wanted to look beyond the 'Creator's wish' part, a prevalent mode of resignation of the thought process, to find a logical and scientific explanation by myself through reading. Eventually I developed the wisdom that the answer lies in the understanding of the brain. When I realized that it is my brain that is somehow generating all my experiences for me, it led to a pretty engrossing experience trying to understand it since. Since this is a book about the brain, I thought it was necessary to discuss the fundamental aspect of its structure. However, I only laid a gross picture with broad strokes only after briefly discussing the highlights of the history of evolution of the brain. Then I tried to address some of the big questions like the consciousness and the generation of the mind and self from a neurological point of view. I went ahead and discussed the mechanism of some of the attributes of self as well. Some of the functional aspects are elucidated as how we fall in love or how we navigate directions and so forth. Computation is the basis by which the brain derives its conclusions. The plasticity of the brain enables us to learn new skills. The genetic aspect cannot be overemphasized. I have included some fascinating data that has recently been found out in these regards. Psychiatric illnesses always fascinated me. I have discussed the genetic basis and pathophysiology of a few of them, like Depression, Alzheimer's disease, etc. The whole book is written on the basis of the latest findings by dedicated professionals. Here I am like a collector who has put all this in a concise deliberation to share my own understandings regarding what it takes for each of us to be the way we are.

Book excerpt: By the present contribution by Modest Guţu, the family Leptocheliidae enriched with 29 new taxa (a subfamily, seven genera and 21 species), as it results from the list, hereinafter. Subfamily Leptocheliinae Lang, 1973: - Genus Alloleptochelia n. g., with the species: A. angusta n. sp., A. heardi n. sp., A. insolita n. sp., A. monotricha n. sp. and A. multiarticulata n. sp.; - Genus Chondrochelia n. g., with the species: C. andersoni n. sp., C. baliensis n. sp., C. dentitruncata n. sp. and C. distincta n. sp.; - Genus Kalloleptochelia n. g., with the species: K. maiorina n. sp., K. pauxilla n. sp. and K. robusta n. sp.; - Genus Leptochelia Dana, 1849, with the species: L. afrieurina n. sp. and L. splendida n. sp.; - Genus Paraleptochelia n. g., with the species P. magnispina n. sp.; - Genus Permixtimella n. g., with the species P. oculifurcillata n. sp.; - Genus Poorea Edgar, 2012, with the species P. obscurus; n. sp. and P. tanzaniensis n. sp. Subfamily Konariinae Bamber, 2013: - Genus Antiparus n. g. with the species A. longisetosus n. sp. Subfamily Metaleptocheliinae nov.: - Genus Metaleptochelia n. g. with the species M. estafricana n. sp. and M. vestpacifica n. sp. Also, the female of the species Leptochelia forresti (Stebbing, 1896), unknown up to now, is described and illustrated for the first time, and the male is minutely redescribed. It is for the first time when a large number of taxa (six genera and 12 species) of the family Leptocheliidae are minutely described on the basis of both sexes, this allowing the establishing of the common morphological features in the males and females of the same species, as well of those present at the genus level. The males of the genus Antiparus n. g. and of the species Antiparus longisetosus n. sp., Poorea obscurus n. sp. and P. tanzaniensis n. sp. and the females of the genus Kalloleptochelia n. g. and of the species Alloleptochelia insolita n. sp., A. multiarticulata n. sp., Kalloleptochelia maiorina n. sp., K. pauxilla n. sp., K. robusta n. sp. and Leptochelia afrieurina n. sp. are unknown. The identification keys of the leptocheliid subfamilies are presented, for the genera of the subfamilies Leptocheliinae and Konariinae, as well as the identification keys of the species of the genera Leptochelia, Alloleptochelia n. g., Kalloleptochelia n. g., Makassaritanais Guţu, 2012, Metaleptochelia n. g. and Poorea Edgar, 2012, and of the new species of the genus Chondrochelia n. g. Considering that the females and males of the species of the family Leptocheliidae have different morphological features, the key of the genera of the subfamily Leptocheliinae (the most numerous within the family, having 20 genera) refers both to the common features of the two sexes (when it was possible) and separately, for females and males allowing a more precise identification. The studied material provided from the Indo-West-Pacific shallow waters. The comments from the Addendum refer to the recent English version of the chapter Order Tanaidacea (revised and updated by Kim Larsen after the original text co-authored by Modest Guţu and the late Jürgen Sieg), from the well-known Traité de Zoologie (Tome VII, Fascicule III A, Crustacés Pracarides), founded by P.-P. Grassé. That new version contains numerous unacceptable mistakes since the author was not consulted or at least informed about the re-publication, as it would have been ethically appropriate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ′Once in a while a manuscript stops you in your tracks... What we are offered here is no recovering of old ground but a step change in perspectives on "body matters" that is both innovative and of fundamental importance to anyone working on this sociological terrain...This text is groundbreaking and simply has to be read′ - Acta Sociologica ′This is Shilling at his creative best...these are seminal observations of the classical theories drawn together as never before. Moreover, as a framework [this monograph] provides a genuinely new and fertile way of reconsidering not just classical sociology but contemporary forms as well′ - Sport, Education & Society ′This is a comprehensive, theoretically sophisticated, and ambitious treatise on the body that draws from, and applies, both classical and contemporary sociological theory in a manner that is innovative and thought-provoking. This book is engaging and thought-provoking, but Shilling′s greatest achievement is his ability to illustrate the importance and continued relevance of classical and contemporary sociological theory to real world concerns. It is a book worthy of widespread attention. It reinvigorated my interest in the sociological classics and contained countless nuggets of interesting information that led me to conclude that it would be a worthy book to recommend to a broad sociological audience′ - Teaching Sociology ′Shilling′s book (like his earlier The Body and Social Theory) is crucial reading...a further valuable contribution in a field where he has provided so much′ - Theory & Psychology ′This is an impressive book by one of the leading social theorists working in the field of body studies. It provides a critical summation of theoretical and substantive work in the field to date, while also presenting a powerful argument for a corporeal realism in which the body is both generative of the emergent properties of social structure and a location of their effects. Its scope and originality make it a key point of reference for students and academics in body studies and in the social and cultural sciences more generally′ - Ian Burkitt, Reader in Social Science, University of Bradford ′Chris Shilling is as always a lucid guide through the dense thickets of the "sociology of the body", and his chapters on the fields of work, sport, eating, music and technology brilliantly show how abstract theoretical debates relate to the real world of people′s lives′ - Professor Stephen Mennell, University College Dublin ′What I find very useful and without any doubt valuable, not only in Shilling′s The Body in Culture, Technology and Society but in his work in general, is the breadth and profoundness of his discussion about the body...the style Shilling maintains is crucial for further development of the sociology of the body as a discipline, for it provides us with a rich intellectual environment about the body′ - Sociology ′For any colleague wanting to have a clear idea of how studies of the body can be empirically grounded as well as theoretically ′rich′, Chris Shilling′s The Body in Culture, Technology and Society , is the book to read. To my mind it offers the best account thus far of not only how social action is embodied and must be recognised as such but also of how social structures condition and shape embodied subjects in a variety of social arenas... This is wonderful insightful ′stuff′ – the ideas and intricate thoughts of a scholar such as Shilling who has been immersed in thinking about the complexities of the body in society as well as sociology for a number of years′ - Sociology of Health and Illness This is a milestone in the sociology of the body. The book offers the most comprehensive overview of the field to date and an innovative framework for the analysis of embodiment. It is founded on a revised view of the relation of classical works to the body. It argues that the body should be read as a multi-dimensional medium for the constitution of society. Upon this foundation, the author constructs a series of analyses of the body and the economy, culture, sociality, work, sport, music, food and technology.

Book excerpt: The Enigma of Desire: Sex, Longing and Belonging in Psychoanalysis, introduces new perspectives on desire and longing, in and outside of the analytic relationship. This exciting volume explores the known and unknown, ghosts and demons, sexuality and lust. Galit Atlas discusses the subjects of sex and desire and explores what she terms the Enigmatic and the Pragmatic aspects of sexuality, longing, female desire, sexual inhibition, pregnancy, parenthood and creativity. The author focuses on the levels of communication that take place in the most intimate settings: between mothers and their babies; between lovers; in the unconscious bond of two people— in the consulting room, where two individuals sit alone in one room, looking and listening, breathing and dreaming. Atlas examines the ways in which different languages, translations and integrations focus on birth, death, sexuality, and human bonds. In The Enigma of Desire each chapter opens with a narrative, a therapeutic story which illustrates both the analyst’s and patient’s desires and the ways these interact and emerge in the consulting room. This book will be of interest to anyone who is interested in the intricacies of sex and desire and of great appeal to psychoanalysts, therapists and mental health professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to assess bisexuality through a range of psychoanalytic and critical perspectives, highlighting both the issues faced by bisexual people in contemporary society and the challenges that can be presented by bisexual clients within a clinical setting. Examining bisexuality through the lenses of Lacanian, Winnicottian and Relational psychoanalytic theories, the book outlines the ways in which the concept is at once both dated and yet still tremendously important. It includes case studies to explore the issue of widespread countertransference responses in the clinical setting, in addition to using both bisexual theory and empirical research on biphobia to comment on the social pressures facing bisexual men and women, and the resultant psychological effects. Bisexual identities and practices have become increasingly visible in recent years, and this important book addresses the lack of critical reckoning with the topic within the psychoanalytic community. It will be of great interest to practicing psychoanalysts and psychotherapists as well as to researchers across the fields of psychoanalysis and gender and sexuality studies.
