Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Emotions of Jesus Nothing needs to be said by way of preface to this latest addition to the "Short Course Series," except that it does not aim at being a treatise on the emotional life of Jesus, and that even the field indicated by its title is covered only in part. Other attractive and fruitful topics - such as our Lord's delight in nature, the emotions arising out of His more intimate personal relations, His emotion in the presence of death, His shame, and the rich emotional content of the Passion-narrative - readily suggest themselves, but have had to be altogether omitted, or else are touched upon in a merely incidental way. Whether it may be possible to me at some future time to remedy this, I know not. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern revision of a timeless but forgotten spiritual classic by Robert Law In researching Jesus’s emotional life, Episcopal priest and Day1 producer and host Peter Wallace came across a scanned copy of Robert Law’s book, The Emotions of Jesus, in the Internet Archive. He found it to be a brilliant jewel of a book that flashes light on the facets of Jesus’s emotions and personality, brightening our understanding and appreciation of who Jesus was, how he lived, what it must have been like to be with him, and follow him. Law’s century-old text has been carefully revised for a contemporary audience, without diminishing its beauty. Wallace addresses obscure wording and gender bias and provides background information and notes in order to ensure a fresh appreciation by modern readers. The result is a new approach to understanding Jesus, the wholly human one, who embodied a range of emotions as we do, and who serves as a model for living bold, authentic, and fervent lives today as followers of the way of love. Questions for meditation or discussion are included with each chapter.

Book excerpt: What am I feeling? Emotions can be confusing. One moment we're happy, content, and hopeful, and the next we're anxious, hurt, and overwhelmed. But we don't have to live at the mercy of our emotions. In True Feelings, a mother-daughter team clears away common misconceptions and mixed messages about our feelings to offer us a biblical perspective on emotions— helping us understand how they work, why we feel what we feel, and how to develop good emotional habits. We will see that we don't have to ignore, excuse, or follow our feelings, but can instead learn to honor God with our emotions as an integral part of who he made us to be.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Face of Jesus Of all the vanished faces, once loved by men, two only have been imaged on the Christian heart of the world - the face of Mary and the face of her divine Son. The face of Mary is not always the same face, but it is always hers, revealing, in its many changes, every phase of virgin purity and every outgoing of mother-love. It has become humanity's ideal. The face of jesus, whose emotions in mani fold human experiences from the cradle to the cross, genius endeavors to portray, has been wrought into Christian memories as closely as color into the rose or fragrance into the lily. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to discuss John's references to Jesus' emotions in the light of the current debate regarding Johannine Christology. The Fourth Gospel refers to Jesus' love, joy, and zeal. At times it also portrays him as troubled, deeply moved, and in tears. Do these expressions of emotion underscore Jesus' humanity or his divinity? The study is set against the background of the emotions of God as found in earlier Jewish literature, as well as against that of the emotions of Jesus in the Synoptics and the remainder of the New Testament. Voorwinde argues that the covenant provides the most consistent perspective for viewing both the emotions of Yahweh in the Old Testament and the emotions of Jesus in the Gospels. The Johannine Jesus is found to fulfil the hitherto incompatible roles of covenant Lord and covenant sacrifice. Rather than being expressive only of his humanity Jesus' emotions are also found to underscore his divinity. This is due to the unique genius of this Gospel with its paradoxical presentation of Jesus whose divinity is manifested most eloquently in his weakness, suffering, and death. Only his tears at the grave of Lazarus can be explained as a human emotion pure and simple. All the other emotions, because of their strong connections to the cross, highlight both Jesus' humanity and divinity, albeit for various reasons and in highly nuanced ways. JSNTS 284>

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty Studies About Jesus Jesus is probably the most widely known character of history. Certainly he is the one who has most deeply stirred the emotions of humanity. For nearly nineteen hundred years men have been praying to him and curs ing by him. Men still die for love of him and sometimes kill his disciples for hate of his name. And yet neither his enemies nor those of us to whom he is Friend, and More - than-friend, know enough about him. These Studies from the Christian Gospels are intended to bring out certain main points in his life and teaching that will help those who use them to know more about him and to have more to do with him. If any who are indifferent to him use them it is hoped that they will find him here a challenge, at first perhaps to curiosity, but finally to conscience and conduct.
