The generally admitted but vaguely conceived doctrine of the connexion between mind and body has been throughout discussed definitely. In treating of the Emotions, I include whatever is known of the physical embodiment of each. The Natural History Method, adopted in delineating the Sensations, is continued in the Treatise on the Emotions. The first chapter is devoted to Emotion in general; after which the individual kinds are classified and discussed; separate chapters being assigned to the AEsthetic Emotions - arising on the contemplation of Beauty in Nature and Art - and to the Ethical, or the Moral Sentiment. Under this last head, I have gone fully into the Theory of Moral Obligation. It has been too much the practice to make the discussion of the Will comprise only the single metaphysical problem of Liberty and Necessity. Darwin's book gave to three men the impetus to develop, the theory of the emotions as organic processes, and this theory has not only become so strongly eu trenched in scientific thought that it is practically assumed to day as the basis for the study of the emotional life, but has also led to the development of the hypothesis of reaction or response as the basis of all mental life: a hypothesis which is rapidly sup planting the phrenologists' theory of brain-activity. The three men who independently developed the organic theory of the emotions were Carl Georg Lange in Denmark, William James in America, and Alexander Sutherland in Australia. The writings of James and Lange had profound influence on contempo rary and later psychologists, and on this account it is not unfair to apply the name J ames-lange Theory to the organic theory of the emotions, as is customarily done. This implies no lack of appreciation of the work of Sutherland, or of the contributions of Ribot, Mosso, and later investigators. In the first of these addresses, the Ether Day Address, delivered at the Massachusetts General Hospital in October, 1910, I first enunciated the Kinetic Theory of Shock, the key to which was found in laboratory researches and in a study of Darwin's "Expression of the Emotions in Man and in Animals," whereby the phylogenetic origin of the emotions was made manifest and the pathologic identity of surgical and emotional shock was established. Since 1910 my associates and I have continued our researches through - (a) Histologic studies of all the organs and tissues of the body; (b) Estimation of the H-ion concentration of the blood in the emotions of anger and fear and after the application of many other forms of stimuli; (c) Functional tests of the adrenals, and (d) Clinical observations. It would seem that if the striking changes produced by fear and anger and by physical trauma in the master organ of the body - the brain - were due to work, then we should expect to find corresponding histologic changes in other organs of the body as well.
