Chapter XII THE ATTACK It did not prove an altogether easy task to collect in Leet all the camels that we needed for our journey. Leet is a very small town with a population numbering only a few hundred, and with no commercial connections whatever. To facilitate matters with regard to our journey I thought it advisable to pay my respects to the Sheikh of Leet. Never before had a Christian entered his home. The medium of our conversation was my dragoman. After the customary felicitations had been exchanged, the Sheikh invited me to dine with him. His house was a hut put together of boards and matting, and without windows of any kind. Along two sides of the room stood divans covered with skins. The walls were hung with weapons. The rest of the furniture of the room consisted of smoking apparatus. Throughout the entire time before dinner, cups of Mocha and of a sort of lemonade were passed around. The coffee was of the Arabian variety, viz., in its preparation the husks of the coffee bean, and not the beans themselves, are boiled. The result is a bitter drink not at all palatable to Europeans, but which, for the sake of politeness, must be swallowed down under any circumstances. The preparations for the meal were begun while we were sitting in the room. First of all, quite a large round mat of woven straw was laid on the bare earth in the middle of the room. Then servants brought in rice, which was heaped in a huge mound in the middle of the mat. A few jars of mixed pickles completed the course. Instead of sitting, we lay down at the table. Spoons were provided, however. Soon we were all cheerfully doing our best to diminish the mountain of rice. Meanwhile the meat course had arrived at the front of the house. It consisted of a whole roast...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from India and the War IN estimating the results to India of this war, it is safe to say that it will have no effect on the great masses of the people - at any rate, no direct effect. There was a slight tremor, almost approaching to panic, among the villages round about Madras on the east coast and near Cochin on the west coast, when the Emden appeared in Indian waters and threw a few shells on to the land and sank a few ships. The story goes that the captain of the Emden got hold of a few fishermen when he was prowling about Madras and told them to tell their fellows on land that the British mj had been defeated on the high seas, and that his ship was the vanguard of a host of other German ships on their way to India. The story, like most war stories, lacks confirmation, but that there was some sort of apprehension among the village folks is certain, from all that one has heard. An Indian government official wrote to say that for a whole week end he was occupied with receiving callers from neigh bouring villages anxious to be assured that there was to be no change of sirkar. That tremor has now passed with the disappearance of the Emden, and things have got back to their even tenor. The war apparently is forgotten except in the little echoes that come gently and fitfully from the bazaars of the city. Other and more important matters now fill the mind - births, marriages, and funerals - and so long as the sun shines and the rains fall in their season, and the tax is not too heavy, and there is enough grain and salt, life will be as tolerable as ever; for the villagers' attitude to life is seldom anything more than an amused tolerance. You may remember myself coming to see you, a year after the end of the war, with the manuscript of a book hidden in an old army blanket. The blanket was not recognisable as such, since with considerable skill I had fashioned an overcoat from it the script I had written during three weeks of fierce mid nights and famishing morrows, following an almost intolerable pain. Nevertheless, you managed to read approximately words of my tale. The kindly encouragement you gave me, the hopes you aroused, and most of all, your friendship, were directly responsible for my eventual retirement to the remote country, there to devote all my time and energy to the recasting of my whole scheme and the selection of characters and episodes that would bear their part in its presentation. I realised many things that I might have to starve that most things that make youth enjoyable I must forgo. (however, I made some good friends in Devon, so I did not mind having but one meal a day). It was borne upon me that one volume could not possibly contain all I had to say, unless that volume were as big as the post-war Who's Who, and rivalry with such an immense work of fiction would be both fatuous and foolish.
