Book excerpt: The objective of this research was to examine the effect of stocking density (SD) on growth, behaviour, and welfare in 1.) conventional (274-342 cm2/bird) and 2.) furnished (247 335 cm2/bird) rearing cages. SD was adjusted by altering group size. In conventional cages, stocking density significantly affected bodyweight; pullets from lower densities were heavier than those from high densities. Rearing density did not affect feeding behaviour, feather pecking, or aggression. The effect of SD on bodyweight was inconsistent in 3 strains of pullets reared in cages furnished with perches and a platform. Locomotion decreased as stocking density increased, while most other behaviours were unaffected. The proportion of birds perching at night from high densities declined as birds grew, suggesting that perch space became limiting. The results of this project indicate that stocking density may affect growth, the ability to locomote, and night perching, but this is likely dependent on cage design.

Book excerpt: Concern over animal welfare has had a substantial and growing impact on the livestock industry both in the US and abroad. Quantification of animal welfare has been a challenging area for both the production and the research communities. Feeding behaviors have been shown to be an indicator of animal well-being, thus one method to evaluate and quantify animal welfare is through continuous and automated monitoring of feeding behaviors. Two studies were designed and conducted to evaluate the effects of controversial management practices on the feeding behaviors of poultry. The first study investigated the effects of four cage stocking densities on the feeding characteristics of mature laying hens. The second study investigated the effects of three different beak trimming methods performed at one day of age and two feed forms on the feeding activities of turkey poults from 8 to 21 days of age. As a result of the first study, no significant differences in feeding characteristics could be detected among the four stocking densities studied (348, 387, 426, and 465 cm2 cage floor space per hen; 54, 60, 66, and 72 in2 cage floor space per hen). The second study detected no significant differences in feeding characteristics measured or body weight gains for the four beak trimming methods (non-trimmed control, hot blade, electric arc, or infrared) and the two feed forms (mash or crumble) studied. Quantification of specific responses such as feeding behavior to potential stressors (i.e. stocking density, beak trimming method, and feed form) through studies such as these may yield better livestock housing design and management decisions based upon scientific data to improve animal welfare.

Book excerpt: Broiler breeder chickens are the parent stock used to produce broiler chickens raised for human consumption and have long been caught in a welfare dilemma. The immensely successful selection of fast-growing meat-type chickens over the last 80 years has created a remarkably efficient meat-producer and given us access to cheap chicken meat but has also created health problems for the animals. These problems especially affect the breeder generation, which must be raised with strict feed restriction to limit weight gain and thus maintain physical health and normal fertility. At the same time, however, feed restriction causes chronic hunger and feeding frustration with reduced animal welfare as a result. In the EU alone 60 million breeders are affected annually and although the problem is well-known within the industry, there is financial incentive to keep selecting for even higher growth potential in broilers, further increasing the problems for broiler breeders. Many strategies for reducing the impact of growth restriction on breeder welfare have been suggested and are usually aimed at somehow increasing the amount of feed given at feeding times. This can be done either through adding bulky fibers to the diet or by reducing feeding frequency. In this thesis, focus is on the latter as we explore the effects of intermittent fasting (IF) on the welfare of young broiler breeders as well as wild-type Red Junglefowl. Intermittent fasting, or “skip-a-day” feeding, is supposedly the most common feeding strategy for broiler breeders worldwide but is perceived as welfare-reducing and thus illegal in Sweden and several other European countries. In spite of this, the scientific knowledge of how this type of feeding affects chicken welfare is scarce. Assessing the overall effect of IF on breeder welfare is complicated by large variations in both physiological and behavioral parameters between feeding and fasting days, but it does appear that chicken welfare is improved at least on the feeding days of IF regimens. It also seems that some of the health benefits reported from mammalian studies of IF may apply to chickens as well, although behavioral indicators still point to welfare issues unless the level of feed restriction can be relaxed. In comparison with daily feed restriction, IF appears to increase the motivation for feed consumption but to reduce the motivation for appetitive behaviors such as foraging, which may explain why birds fed on this type of schedule are often reported as calmer.
