Book excerpt: Broiler breeder chickens are the parent stock used to produce broiler chickens raised for human consumption and have long been caught in a welfare dilemma. The immensely successful selection of fast-growing meat-type chickens over the last 80 years has created a remarkably efficient meat-producer and given us access to cheap chicken meat but has also created health problems for the animals. These problems especially affect the breeder generation, which must be raised with strict feed restriction to limit weight gain and thus maintain physical health and normal fertility. At the same time, however, feed restriction causes chronic hunger and feeding frustration with reduced animal welfare as a result. In the EU alone 60 million breeders are affected annually and although the problem is well-known within the industry, there is financial incentive to keep selecting for even higher growth potential in broilers, further increasing the problems for broiler breeders. Many strategies for reducing the impact of growth restriction on breeder welfare have been suggested and are usually aimed at somehow increasing the amount of feed given at feeding times. This can be done either through adding bulky fibers to the diet or by reducing feeding frequency. In this thesis, focus is on the latter as we explore the effects of intermittent fasting (IF) on the welfare of young broiler breeders as well as wild-type Red Junglefowl. Intermittent fasting, or “skip-a-day” feeding, is supposedly the most common feeding strategy for broiler breeders worldwide but is perceived as welfare-reducing and thus illegal in Sweden and several other European countries. In spite of this, the scientific knowledge of how this type of feeding affects chicken welfare is scarce. Assessing the overall effect of IF on breeder welfare is complicated by large variations in both physiological and behavioral parameters between feeding and fasting days, but it does appear that chicken welfare is improved at least on the feeding days of IF regimens. It also seems that some of the health benefits reported from mammalian studies of IF may apply to chickens as well, although behavioral indicators still point to welfare issues unless the level of feed restriction can be relaxed. In comparison with daily feed restriction, IF appears to increase the motivation for feed consumption but to reduce the motivation for appetitive behaviors such as foraging, which may explain why birds fed on this type of schedule are often reported as calmer.

Book excerpt: The Annual Beltsville Symposium provides a forum for interaction among scientists involved in research that is vitally important to agri culture and to the agricultural sciences. The Twelfth Symposium in this series focused on the unifying biochemical and physiological mechan isms controlling growth and development of biological systems - ani mals, plants insects. Unraveling the complex biochemical mechanisms associated with the sequencing of organism growth and development and identifying, locating, and manipulating key control mechanisms are essential in utilizing the full potential of biotechnology for improving the composition and quality of agricultural products and the profitability of agriculture. Accordingly, speakers directed their remarks to basic aspects of biological mechanisms in their area of specialization with considera tion given to current status, future direction, potential impact, and limitations to progress. The Symposium addressed fundamental questions in: -Tissue specific gene regulation: cell division and differentiation -Mechanisms for regulating hormone concentration -Hormonal regulation of growth and development -Non-hormonal regulation of growth and development -Nutritional regulation of growth and development Because the backgrounds of the symposium attendees covered a wide spectrum in the basic biological and physical sciences, each topic was introduced by a brief overview, but general reviews were avoided in favor of findings from on-going research projects. The symposium brought together a distinguished group of invited scientists from around the world who are leaders. Many attendees made poster presentations which increased the exchange of ideas and sti mulated informal discussion.

It’s a combination that Avalon discovered after years of self-experimentation and intense research on the mechanics of body fat regulation. In What When Wine, Avalon shares her journey to a healthier lifestyle, with the tips and tricks she learned along the way, as well as a jumpstart plan including 50 delicious Paleo-friendly, gluten-free recipes by chef Ariane Resnick.

Book excerpt: When I first heard of intermittent fasting, through a Pinterest post in 2017, I assumed that it, too, was going to be a waste of my time and that it was pretty much just a "starvation diet."I've done those in the past -- and was miserable every step of the way. Also? From my own experience and those of my friends, starvation diets didn't work. That said, I am and-always-have-been a sucker for the next new and shiny diet plan... so I gave it a try for 3 days. (PS: this is usually how I do things. I go all on board for 3 days and then I crash and burn....)Anyhow, I didn't do a lick of research before diving straight in with a 4 hour eating window that I decided should only be between 12 noon and 4 pm. I decided that I was going to have coffee with a bit of "spackle" (powdered creamer) in it for breakfast and chicken broth for lunch. Any time I felt hungry through the day (and it was ALL DAY hunger), I would have a cup of Bengal Spice (cinnamon-flavored) tea or a mug of chicken broth. In my eating window I would eat a "healthy dinner" of about 1000 calories. I didn't allow myself to have any sugar or anything "fun" to eat. I white-knuckled it through my 3 days. I now know what I did wrong, and how if you do it correctly, intermittent fasting is actually pretty darn easy to stick with in the long term. I've now been at it for over a year, and the stubborn 10 pounds that have plagued me my entire adult life have slowly disappeared and stayed away.I get it that this sounds way too good to be true and you're likely to be skeptical. If you want to get into more of the science-y stuff of how this all works without simply being a "starvation diet" then I urge you to do some research on your own. If you are still with me, this is how you do it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of intermittent fasting is not new. Intermittent fasting is the process of avoiding food and calorie-rich drinks for a certain amount of time. Intermittent fasting or IF involves a cycle of eating and fasting. It is an eating pattern where one shift to periods of eating and fasting over a given period of time. There is nothing set in stone about it and you can do different types of intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting isn't a diet. It is a way of eating that humans have been doing for centuries. Don't confuse starvation with fasting. Fasting is completely different from starvation in one crucial way: control. Starvation is the involuntary abstention from eating. Fasting, on the other hand, is voluntary abstention from eating for health, weight loss, spiritual or other reasons. Food is readily available, but you choose not to eat it. Fasting has no standard duration. Anytime you are not eating and skipping meals are technically fasting. This book has the best assortment of delicious, easy to make meals ranging from breakfast to desserts that will aid your weight loss within a short span of time. Are you ready? Grab this copy and start licking your fingers as you devour that luscious meal. The recipes in this book are my favorite, they make every minute spent in the kitchen worth!
