Book excerpt: While in the late 1970s and early 1980s health compliance research on adults represented a vigorous field of study, a marked decline of interest on the topic set in during the last part of the 1980s. By contrast, research on health compliance involving pediatric populations was less popular during the same period; however, interest in this topic -- as evidenced by the contributions to this volume -- is on the increase. Four main themes -- relating to theory, measurement, prevention, and intervention -- emerge and are interwoven among the chapters. These themes help to bind and unify the volume into a conceptual whole because although the sections are divided along thematic lines, contributors often include elements of some or all of the themes in their chapters. This state of affairs reflects the interdependence of these thematic issues and suggests how important they are for the state of the art.

Book excerpt: A complete guide to evidence based interventions for children and adolescents The past decade has witnessed the development of numerous interventions proved to be highly effective; several treatments are now considered to be "well established" or "probably efficacious" interventions for children. Given the range of providers working with children—clinical psychologists, child psychiatrists, clinical social workers, school psychologists, and marriage and family therapists—this book is designed to provide all professionals the information they now need about the use of these evidence-based interventions (EBIs), as well as the evaluation criteria used to determine their efficacy in in meeting the mental health needs of children. Alfano and Beidel have assembled a team of experts to write the disorder chapters. Each chapter begins with an overview of the disorder then delves into evidence-based approaches to treatment, the impact of parental involvement, case-by-case modifications, progress measurement, and clinical examples. In overview chapters the editors cover: The role of development in treatment planning and implementation Dissemination of EBIs into school and community settings The use of controversial therapies with children Emerging methods of service delivery and access improvement Comprehensive Evidence Based Interventions for Children and Adolescents provides clinicians, researchers, and students alike with the theoretical, conceptual, and practical skills to provide children and adolescents with the best care possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence-based Paediatric and Adolescent Diabetes brings together an international group of paediatric diabetes specialists to address the cause, course and complications of all types of diabetes. From a careful review of the latest research, they propose the best possible evidence-based recommendations for the care of children and the youth with diabetes. The text provides the reader with an understanding across three different levels: • Reviews how strong the evidence is for recommending one approach over another • Highlights areas where evidence is not based on the types of studies needed to provide ‘highgrade recommendations’, but where there is a general consensus as to the most sensible approach • Identifies the issues that remain inadequately addressed such that no definitive recommendations can be made As the incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus continues to increase worldwide, and type 2 is being seen in more young people, this timely volume will help a wide range of health care professionals deliver the best possible care to their young patients.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) must adhere to a complex treatment regimen. Adherence is often poor during adolescence, when the regimen behaviours may interact negatively with many of the developmental tasks. In a randomized controlled outcome study, 15 adolescents and their families participated in a family-based intervention for improving adherence to the diabetic regimen. Fourteen comparison group adolescents with IDDM spent a comparable amount of time learning stress management techniques. Adolescents in both groups attended a diabetes management review session with the clinic nurse. Inclusion criteria included mean glycosylated hemoglobin (HbAlc) levels $>$9.0% over the previous nine months. At a 6-month follow-up, adolescents in the family intervention group were testing blood glucose levels more regularly (p $$1% (0% vs. 29%, $\chi\sp2$ = 6.32, p =.05). Methodological issues were discussed.
