Book excerpt: The intent of this project is to replicate a specific instructional method used in Wood et al.0́9s study focusing on the use of the pegword mnemonic strategy paired with stories and illustrations for 15 targeted multiplication facts remaining after mastering math facts in the zeros, ones, twos, fives, or nines groups. Three questions will be asked during this project on the effects of mnemonic instruction using pegword strategies on the percentage of multiplication facts answered correctly by third, fourth, and fifth grade students with learning disabilities? 1) Does pegword instruction paired with stories and illustrations result in immediate improvement for the specific multiplication facts taught? 2) Are students0́9 performances on previously taught multiplication facts maintained as new multiplication facts are introduced? 3) Do students maintain accuracy on 2 and 4 week follow-up tests?

Book excerpt: Abstract: Math fact fluency is a critical aspect of becoming proficient in the area of mathematics. This study was designed to determine whether incremental rehearsal of basic multiplication facts had an effect on the fact fluency of middle school students with learning disabilities. The researcher used a multiple baseline across subjects design to determine the effect of incremental rehearsal on fact fluency for three seventh-grade students with learning disabilities. To measure fact fluency, the researcher created a curriculum-based assessment. The participants took a two-minute multiplication test consisting of 80 single-digit facts using factors of 1-9 weekly. Visual inspection of the data was used to analyze the results. The data was graphed with both median and trend lines. The results of the data analysis indicated that prediction, verification, and replication did not occur, thus the results of the study did not demonstrate a functional relationship between the independent variable, incremental rehearsal and the dependent variable, fact fluency. Without further research, this study brings into question the effectiveness of incremental rehearsal for middle school students with learning disabilities.

Book excerpt: This quasi-experimental study examines the academic effects that an interdisciplinary program, Hopscotch Math, has on the development of multiplication facts knowledge of 3rd-grade English-speaking and Spanish-speaking bilingual students. This study also examines teacher perception with regard to Hopscotch Math's effects on students' academic progress and on students' behavioral changes with regard to multiplication facts development. The researcher used three research groups, each comprising approximately 23 subjects. One group received the entire Hopscotch Math program; a second group received the Hopscotch Math program less the movement-based portion of the program, and the third group served as the control group and received no intervention. Students in all research groups took three 50-question multiplication facts tests at three different points in the study: one pre-intervention, one mid-intervention, and one post-intervention. The interventions lasted approximately 8 weeks. The researcher also conducted two round-table question-and-answer sessions with the teachers whose students were the research subjects in this study: one mid-intervention and one post-intervention. The researcher asked questions with regard to teacher perceptions toward Hopscotch Math's academic effectiveness and its effect on student behaviors. From a quantitative perspective, the researcher was ultimately interested in Hopscotch Math's overall academic effectiveness. Pairwise comparisons resulted in one comparison that showed significance (p= 0.0267). This comparison was between the full Hopscotch Math group and the control group. This same comparison had the highest effects size (r=0.2801) of all the pairwise comparisons, but is still categorized as a small effect size. From a qualitative perspective, the responses to the questions asked during the two round-table question-and-answer sessions were generally positive. Results indicate that Hopscotch Math, when used in its entirety, can be an effective tool for teaching basic multiplication facts to elementary-aged students.

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of basic multiplication mastery (0-12) and self-efficacy outcomes for elementary age students attempting to master multiplication facts in a Computer-Assisted Instructional (CAI) environment. Timez Attack (TA), a modern Internet based 3-D multiplication video game, was the computer program used in this study. Four third- and four fourth-grade classes of students at a public charter school received either 12 20-minute Teacher-Led Instructional (TLI), or TA multiplication practice sessions. Pre- and post Math Attitude Survey (MAS), timed multiplication tests, observations, and informal interviews were used to assess and compare TA and TLI's learning environments, performance, and self-efficacy outcomes. Both third- and fourth-grade TA students' level of multiplication mastery improved significantly after intervention. Results from the post-MAS also revealed significantly higher self-efficacy beliefs, and reduced nervousness in learning multiplication facts amongst some TA students. Statistical data analysis revealed no significant performance outcome differences between TLI and TA third-grade classes; however, post-test comparisons between fourth-grade TLI and TA students showed TA students significantly outperforming their comparison group counterparts by answering approximately 50% more problems in a given time and feeling significantly less nervous toward learning new multiplication math facts. The TA program's motivational, self-paced, and self-evaluative features seemed to produce a positive learning environment, which encouraged student learning. Educators should consider using CAI with features similar to TA's to improve students' academic performance and self-efficacy.

Revealing students’ thought processes with extensive annotated samples of student work and vignettes characteristic of classroom teachers’ experience, this book provides teachers a research-based lens to interpret evidence of student thinking, inform instruction, and ultimately improve student learning. Based on research gathered in the Ongoing Assessment Project (OGAP) and updated throughout, this engaging and easy-to-use resource also features the following: New chapters on the OGAP Multiplicative Reasoning Framework and Learning Progressions and Using the OGAP Multiplicative Progression to inform instruction and support student learning In-chapter sections on how Common Core State Standards for Math are supported by math education research Case Studies focusing on a core mathematical idea and different types of instructional responses to illustrate how teachers can elicit evidence of student thinking and use that information to inform instruction Big Ideas frame the chapters and provide a platform for meaningful exploration of the teaching of multiplication and division Looking Back Questions at the end of each chapter allow teachers to analyze student thinking and to consider instructional strategies for their own students Instructional Links to help teachers relate concepts from each chapter to their own instructional materials and programs Accompanying online Support Material that includes an answer key to Looking Back questions, as well as a copy of the OGAP Fraction Framework and Progression A Focus on Multiplication and Division is part of the popular A Focus on . . . collection, designed to aid the professional development of preservice and in-service mathematics teachers. As with the other volumes on addition and subtraction, ratios and proportions, and fractions, this updated new edition bridges the gap between what math education researchers know and what teachers need to know to better understand evidence in student work and make effective instructional decisions.
