This book was released on 1973 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A better understanding of weed-soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) interference is necessary before accurate damage thresholds can be determined for weeds growing in soybeans. The objective of this study was to use area of influence methodology to evaluate weed-soybean interference. This objective was accomplished by: (a) monitoring the length and area of soybean row influenced by one common cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium L.) and one sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia L.) plant throughout a growing season and (b) monitoring soybean interference effects on the vegetative growth of these two weed species. Results from this two-year field study indicate that in both years, soybeans' first measurable effect on common cocklebur and sicklepod vegetative dvelopment occurred betweeen the sixth and eighth week after palnting, and soybean continued to strongly interfere with common cocklebur and sicklepod development over the course of the growing season. However, common cocklebur was less affected than sicklepod by soybean interference. Common cocklebur's first measurable effects on soybean vegetative development occurred 10 weeks after planting in 1984 and 12 weeks after planting in 1985. Sicklepod's first measurable effect on soybean growth occurred 12 weeks after planting in both years. Weed interference effects were greatest on soybean plants closest to the weed and decreased linearly with increasing distance from the weed. At seed harvest, the number of soyban pods per plant was the primary yield component influenced (...).

Book Synopsis Soybean Production in the Midsouth by : Larry G. Heatherly
Download or read book Soybean Production in the Midsouth written by Larry G. Heatherly and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-09-29 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compiles information relevant to understanding soybean production processes and condenses it into a single volume. The authors identify production practices and bring together diverse information that suggests ways for producers to better utilize the soil and climatic resources of the midsouthern U.S. to enhance production of this valuable and versatile crop. This publication makes a special effort to focus on information that will enhance soybean production in the midsouth, where yields have been lower than those in the upper midwester n portion of the U.S., however, much of the information, such as statistics and crop models, will be applicable to other regions, from Texas to the Carolinas.
Book Synopsis Weed-Crop Competition by : Robert L. Zimdahl
Download or read book Weed-Crop Competition written by Robert L. Zimdahl and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-11-19 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past 20 years, the first edition of this text has been widely cited as authoritative academic reference. The latest edition continues the tradition set by the original book, and covers weed science research that has been published since 1980. This book aims to reduce the instance of research duplication—saving scientists and supporting institutions time and money. Not only does the second edition of Weed Crop Competition review, summarize, and combine current research; it critiques the research as well. This text has the potential to accelerate advancements in weed crop competition, which remains an important factor that affects crop yields. Scientists in foreign countries where access to literature is often limited or nonexistent, will find the information in this text invaluable. Weed scientists, crop scientists, plant ecologists, sustainable agriculturists, and organic agriculturists will be well-pleased with this long overdue and much needed new editionWeed Crop Competition provides a unique reference that reviews, summarises and synthesizes the literature published concerning research on this topic. The first edition has been one of the most frequently cited sources in weed science for the past 20 years. The second edition covers the significant body of literature that has been published since 1980. Originally intended to survey existing research, the intent of the book is to reduce the instance of research duplication, thus saving scientists and their institutions time and money, and expediting advancements in weed crop competition, an important factor affecting crop yields. Scientists in foreign countries where access to the literature is often limited or non-existent, find the information an invaluable resource. This long overdue and much needed new edition rejuvenates the tradition set by the original book.
