Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to determine what differences existed between incidences of violence in high schools with a mandatory uniform policy and schools with no mandatory policy in one school district located in the central part of the United States. Nineteen schools, 10 with no mandatory uniform policy and nine with a policy, served as the setting for the study. Data were collected for the 2010, 2011, and 2012 school years and consisted of archival demographic data retrieved from the school district website and incidences of school violence as measured by Violent Crime and Incident Reports (VCIRs). The research question queried if there was a statistically significant difference in incidences of school violence in high schools with a mandatory uniform policy compared to high schools with no mandatory uniform policy as measured by the Violent Crime and Incident Reports. Bandura's theory of learned behavior and rational choice theory formed the theoretical foundations of the study. Data were analyzed using SPSS, version 21.0. Descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations) and inferential statistics (t test for independent samples) associated with this design was used. The t test examined the dependent variable (incidences of school violence) on each of the two levels of the independent variable for statistically significant differences. Findings showed there was no statistically significant difference in incidences of school violence between the two groups of schools. Therefore, in efforts to further establish safe climates, school leaders might want to consider alternatives such as metal detectors, resource officers, cameras, and character education programs to help reduce incidences of school violence.
