Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hysteria Neurasthenia I have attempted in this little book to give a concise account of Hysteria and Neurasthenia. The clinical aspect of these diseases has been kept in view throughout. The literature of the subject is now so enormous that without very greatly exceeding my limits it was obviously impossible to deal at all fully with it, but it would not be right for me not to acknowledge, even thus imperfectly, my great indebtedness to former writers, and especially the more recent ones, on Hysteria and Neurasthenia. The perusal of their works, so many of them distinguished by wealth of observation and breadth of knowledge, makes me fully conscious of my own shortcomings. Whilst, however, my endeavour has been to keep within moderate limits, and to give the results of my own clinical observation, I trust that I have left out nothing of importance, and that this little work may prove of some service as a practical guide, and that the statements made in it have at least the merits of accuracy and clearness. Download or read book Care of the Psyche written by Stanley W. Jackson and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, a distinguished historian of medicine surveys the basic elements that have constituted psychological healing over the centuries. Dr. Stanley W. Jackson shows that healing practices, whether they come from the worlds of medicine, religion, or philosophy, share certain elements that transcend space and time.Drawing on medical writings from classical Greece and Rome to the present, as well as on philosophical and religious writings, Dr. Jackson shows that the basic ingredients of psychological healing-which have survived changes of name, the fall of their theoretical contexts, and the waning of social support in different historical eras-are essential factors in our modern psychotherapies and in healing contexts in general.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fat and Blood: An Essay on the Treatment of Certain Forms of Neurasthenia and Hysteria The continued favor which this book has enjoyed in Europe as well as in this country has rendered me doubly desirous to make it a thorough and clear statement of the treatment of the kind of cases which it discusses as carried out in my practice to-day. In the endeavor to do this, the present edition, like the last two, has been carefully revised by my son. Dr. John K. Mitchell, and there is no chapter, and scarcely a page, where some alteration or addition has not been made, besides those of the sixth and seventh editions, as the result of added years of experience. Especially in the chapters on the means of treatment some details have been thought worth adding to help the statement so often repeated in the book that success will depend on the care with which details are carried out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treatment of Neurasthenia The recognition of relaxing climates as an exciting cause (or at least exacerbating cause) of neurasthenia, suggests an addition to the prophylactic rules given in Part V. A young man with an inherited predisposition to neurasthenia should, in choosing a profession, avoid one that may lead him into such climates; and if he decides on a colonial life, he must select a colony that will not develop the complaint. Book Synopsis Neurasthenic Nation by : David G. Schuster
Download or read book Neurasthenic Nation written by David G. Schuster and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the United States rushed toward industrial and technological modernization in the late nineteenth century, people worried that the workplace had become too competitive, the economy too turbulent, domestic chores too taxing, while new machines had created a fast-paced environment that sickened the nation. Physicians testified that, without a doubt, modern civilization was causing a host of ills—everything from irritability to insomnia, lethargy to weight loss, anxiety to lack of ambition, and indigestion to impotence. They called this condition neurasthenia. Neurasthenic Nation investigates how the concept of neurasthenia helped doctors and patients, men and women, and advertisers and consumers negotiate changes commonly associated with “modernity.” Combining a survey of medical and popular literature on neurasthenia with original research into rare archives of personal letters, patient records, and corporate files, David Schuster charts the emergence of a “neurasthenic nation”—a place where people saw their personal health as inextricably tied to the pitfalls and possibilities of a changing world.

Book Synopsis Hysteria Beyond Freud by : Sander L. Gilman
Download or read book Hysteria Beyond Freud written by Sander L. Gilman and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "She's hysterical." For centuries, the term "hysteria" has been used by physicians and laymen to diagnose and dismiss the extreme emotionality and mysterious physical disorders presumed to bedevil others—especially women. How did this medical concept assume its power? What cultural purposes does it serve? Why do different centuries and different circumstances produce different kinds of hysteria? These are among the questions pursued in this absorbing, erudite reevaluation of the history of hysteria. The widely respected authors draw upon the insights of social and cultural history, rather than Freudian psychoanalysis, to examine the ways in which hysteria has been conceived by doctors and patients, writers and artists, in Europe and North America, from antiquity to the early years of the twentieth century. In so doing, they show that a history of hysteria is a history of how we understand the mind. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1993.

Here, she is to rest alone – forbidden to leave her room. Instead of improving, she starts hallucinating, imagining herself crawling with other women behind the room's yellow wallpaper. And secretly, she records her experiences. The Yellow Wall-Paper [1892] is the short but intense, Gothic horror story, written as a diary, about a woman in an attic – imprisoned in her gender; by the story. Charlotte Perkins Gilman's feminist novella was long overlooked in American literary history. Nowadays, it is counted among the classics. CHARLOTTE PERKINS GILMAN (1860–1935), born in Hartford, Connecticut, was an American feminist theorist, sociologist, novelist, short story writer, poet, and playwright. Her writings are precursors to many later feminist theories. With her radical life attitude, Perkins Gilman has been an inspiration for many generations of feminists in the USA. Her most famous work is the short story The Yellow Wall-Paper [1892], written when she suffered from postpartum psychosis.
Download or read book Stigma written by Erving Goffman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-11-19 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life analyzes a person’s feelings about himself and his relationship to people society calls “normal.” Stigma is an illuminating excursion into the situation of persons who are unable to conform to standards that society calls normal. Disqualified from full social acceptance, they are stigmatized individuals. Physically deformed people, ex-mental patients, drug addicts, prostitutes, or those ostracized for other reasons must constantly strive to adjust to their precarious social identities. Their image of themselves must daily confront, and be affronted by, the image others reflect back to them. Drawing extensively on autobiographies and case studies, sociologist Erving Goffman analyzes the stigmatized person’s feelings about himself and his relationship to “normals” He explores the variety of strategies stigmatized individuals employ to deal with the rejection of others, and the complex sorts of information about themselves they project. In Stigma, the interplay of alternatives the stigmatized individual must face every day is brilliantly examined by one of America’s leading social analysts. “This short book established the conceptual understanding of stigma that continues to buttress contemporary sociological thinking.” —Sociological Review
