Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of the American Citizen IN many of the political writings of the day, there is a tendency to lay too much stress on the mechanism of government and of industry, and too little stress on the force by which this mechanism is kept at work. In recent educational movements, also, too much thought is perhaps given to the problem of preparing men and women to take their several places in a social machine, and too little to the development of that power and spirit upon which the perpetuation of our whole social order depends. From my public addresses and magazine articles of the past few years, I have tried to select those which emphasize the more neglected side of these questions, and to arrange them in a continuous series. In a book thus prepared, it is inevitable that there should be some repe tition and some apparent inconsistencies. If the reader is perplexed by any of these things, he will perhaps find the explanation in the date of the different utterances and the special conditions under which they were made public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years after A Nation at Risk, conservatives’ ideas to reform America’s lagging education system gained much traction. Key items like school choice and rigorous academic standards drew bipartisan support and were put into practice across the country. Today, these gains are in retreat, ceding ground to progressive nostrums that do little to boost the skills and knowledge of young people. Far from being discouraged, however, conservatives should seize the moment to refresh their vision of quality K–12 education for today’s America. These essays by 20 leading conservative thinkers do just that. Students, according to this vision, should complete high school with a thorough understanding of the country’s history, including gratitude for its sacrifices, respect for its achievements, and awareness of its shortcomings. They should also learn to be trustworthy stewards of a democratic republic, capable of exercising virtue and civic responsibility. Beyond helping to form their character, schools ought to ready their pupils for careers that are productive, rewarding, and dignified. Excellent technical-training opportunities will await those not headed to a traditional college. Regardless of the paths and schools that they select, all students must come to understand that they can succeed in America if they are industrious, creative, and responsible. Anchored in tradition yet looking towards tomorrow, How to Educate an American should be read by anyone concerned with teaching future generations to preserve the country’s heritage, embody its universal ethic, and pursue its founding ideals.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Education of an American Citizen The purpose of this series of loosely connected chapters is to call attention to some of the influences which direct, and some of the qualities which mark, the religious education of an American citizen. The normal life of an American proceeds from childhood to youth and from youth to manhood, through the shifting environments of home, school, college, business, citizenship and Church; and at each step he is met by conditions and demands which may either promote or obstruct his religious education. What, then, are the circumstances which are likely to be most favorable for a healthy-minded and progressive religious experience? What can be done by parents, teachers, employers, statesman, or pastors, to reinforce American citizenship with a rational religious life? What are the special obstacles which American civilization offers to religious progress? What are the traits of the American character on which teachers of religion may most confidently depend? Book excerpt: This is a story of hope, but also of peril. It began when our nation’s polarized political class started conscripting everyday citizens into its culture war. From their commanding heights in political parties, media, academia, and government, these partisans have attacked one another for years, but increasingly they’ve convinced everyday Americans to join the fray. Why should we feel such animosity toward our fellow citizens, our neighbors, even our own kin? Because we’ve fallen for the false narrative, eagerly promoted by pundits on the Left and the Right, that citizens who happen to vote Democrat or Republican are enthusiastic supporters of Team Blue or Team Red. Aside from a minority of party activists and partisans, however, most voters are simply trying to choose the lesser of two evils. The real threat to our union isn’t Red vs. Blue America, it’s the quiet collusion within our nation’s political class to take away that most American of freedoms: our right to self-governance. Even as partisans work overtime to divide Americans against one another, they’ve erected a system under which we ordinary citizens don’t have a voice in the decisions that affect our lives. From foreign wars to how local libraries are run, authority no longer resides with We the People, but amongst unaccountable officials. The political class has stolen our birthright and set us at one another’s throats. This is the story of how that happened and what we can do about it. America stands at a precipice, but there’s still time to reclaim authority over our lives and communities.

Book excerpt: Education affects these two dimensions in distinct ways, influencing democratic enlightenment through cognitive proficiency and sophistication, and political engagement through position in social networks. For characteristics of enlightenment, formal education simply adds to the degree to which citizens support and are knowledgeable about democratic principles.
