Book Synopsis Eat & Beat Diabetes with Picture Perfect Weight Loss by : Dr. Howard M. Shapiro
Download or read book Eat & Beat Diabetes with Picture Perfect Weight Loss written by Dr. Howard M. Shapiro and published by Harlequin. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beat diabetes and lose weight! Ask any doctor or nutritionist who treats patients with diabetes: the first focus for controlling the disease is a healthy eating plan. But typical diabetic eating plans have been all about what you can't eat and what to do if you fall prey to a craving for foods you shouldn't have. But now a typical day in the life of a diabetic might start with a smoked salmon-and-dill omelet, continue to a lunch of three-bean chili, salsa and guacamole, and finish with a dinner of grilled shrimp and shaved fennel, topped off by a dessert of chocolate terrine. It's a kind of eating that virtually guarantees not just control of the disease and a satisfying of the appetite, but an emphasis on specific nutrients that actually target diabetes, beating back its potential side effects and maintaining the healthy weight that is key to controlling the disease. In Eat & Beat Diabetes with Picture Perfect Weight Loss, Dr. Howard Shapiro uses the same visual method of food comparisons that made his bestselling weight-loss books so popular and easy to use. Now he has teamed with top chef Franklin Becker, a diabetic himself, and together they reveal the secrets to a diet that can actually help you prevent and beat diabetes—without depriving yourself of delicious food.
Download or read book The Cook Not Mad written by The Cookbook and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-16 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1830 in North America, this volume in the American Antiquarian Cookbook Collection stresses American cooking over European cuisine. Within a year of its publication in the United States, The Cook Not Mad was also published in Canada and thus became Canada’s first printed cookbook. In contrast to some of the larger encyclopedic cookbook collections of the day, The Cook Not Mad provides 310 recipes and household information designed to be a quick and easy reference guide to domestic organization for the contemporary housewife. The author describes the content as “Good Republican dishes” and includes typical American ingredients such as turkey, pumpkin, codfish, and cranberries. There are classic recipes for Tasty Indian Pudding, Federal Pancakes, Good Rye and Indian Bread (cornmeal), Johnnycake, Indian Slapjack, Washington Cake, and Jackson Jumbles. In spite of the author’s American “intentions,” the book does include foreign influences such as traditional English recipes, and it also contains one of the earliest known recipes for shish-kebab in American cookbooks. Reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts, founded in 1812.
Book Synopsis The Edible Tao by : Ruth Pennington Paget
Download or read book The Edible Tao written by Ruth Pennington Paget and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-08 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My sister worked as a waitress at the Ho-Ho Inn, a Chinese restaurant, on Cass Street in Detroit. She sat a plate of Egg Foo Yung in front of five-year-old me. I had a way with words and quickly renamed this Egg Foo "Yuck." Tears ran down my cheeks as I thought about eating this worm-like mess of food. The Chinese waiter called George came in and looked at me. They took the Egg Foo "Yuck" and threw it in the garbage, then he went to the freezer and got me one of those ice cream treats that Chinese restaurants serve; a coconut flavored outer shell of ice cream surrounding a mango core. My sister came in and glared at me. George said, "She ate everything, so I gave her an ice cream." I smiled sweetly at George. My love for the Chinese, if not their food, began at that instant. --"The Edible Tao"

Download or read book Fat Chance written by Robert H. Lustig and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-12-31 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The landmark New York Times best seller that reveals how the explosion of sugar in our diets has created an obesity epidemic, and what we can do to save ourselves. Robert Lustig is at the forefront of war against sugar — showing us that it's toxic, it's addictive, and it's everywhere because the food companies want it to be. His 90-minute YouTube video "Sugar: The Bitter Truth" has been viewed more than 7 million times. Now, in this landmark book, he documents the science and the politics that have led to personal misery and public crisis — the pandemic of obesity and chronic disease--over the last thirty years. In the late 1970s, when the U.S. government declared that we needed to get the fat out of our diets, the food industry responded by pumping in more sugar to make food more palatable (and more salable), and by removing the fiber to make food last longer on the shelf. The result has been a perfect storm for our health, disastrously altering our biochemistry to make us think we're starving, drive our eating habits out of our control, and turn us into couch potatoes. If we cannot control how we eat, it's because of the catastrophic excess of sugar in our diet--the resulting hormonal imbalances have rewired our brains! To help us lose weight and recover our health, Lustig presents strategies we can each use to readjust the key hormones that regulate hunger, reward, and stress, as well as societal strategies to improve the health of the next generation. With scientific rigor and even a little humor, Fat Chance categorically proves that "a calorie is not a calorie," and takes that knowledge to its logical conclusion--an overhaul of the global food system.

Book Synopsis The Edible South by : Marcie Cohen Ferris
Download or read book The Edible South written by Marcie Cohen Ferris and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-09-22 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Edible South, Marcie Cohen Ferris presents food as a new way to chronicle the American South's larger history. Ferris tells a richly illustrated story of southern food and the struggles of whites, blacks, Native Americans, and other people of the region to control the nourishment of their bodies and minds, livelihoods, lands, and citizenship. The experience of food serves as an evocative lens onto colonial settlements and antebellum plantations, New South cities and civil rights-era lunch counters, chronic hunger and agricultural reform, counterculture communes and iconic restaurants as Ferris reveals how food--as cuisine and as commodity--has expressed and shaped southern identity to the present day. The region in which European settlers were greeted with unimaginable natural abundance was simultaneously the place where enslaved Africans vigilantly preserved cultural memory in cuisine and Native Americans held tight to kinship and food traditions despite mass expulsions. Southern food, Ferris argues, is intimately connected to the politics of power. The contradiction between the realities of fulsomeness and deprivation, privilege and poverty, in southern history resonates in the region's food traditions, both beloved and maligned.
