Download or read book Maggie Walz and the Early Finns on Drummond Island written by Beth Maki and published by . This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maggie Walz was a Finnish-American lady of many hats. Not only was she a newspaper publisher, teacher, ticket agent, sponsor of many of her countrymen and women, temperance leader, and suffragette, but also a United States land agent.Drummond Island lies the furthest east you can go in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In May 1905, land was available there for homesteading. The dream of many Finns was to own their own land. They no longer wanted to have to work in the depths of the mines with all of its dangers. A number of Finns traveled with Maggie from the Copper Country to Marquette. There she and six others filed homestead patent papers. They all then continued on to Scammon Cove on the Island. They were going to start their "utopian" community. This is the story of those first Finnish homesteaders and the others who followed. The author, Beth Maki, is the granddaughter of one of those first homesteaders, Jacob and Liisa Heikkinen. Six children were born to the Heikkinens while living on Drummond. Among them was Beth's Mother, Allie. Many Finns with Drummond Island connections shared their pictures and stories with Beth. This book, with 259 pictures, 3 fold-out maps, and many family's stories, is a compilation of information received, and data that the author has been able to glean from census records, land patent applications, and other sources. There is still more to the story. It is the hope that this book will continue the conversation about those Finns who are only represented by a name.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drummond Island: The Story of the British Occupation, 1815-1828 Tory is a sealed book. Where once was the life and bustle of a military post, garrisoned by warlike Britons, now are only the remains and sad ones - of the populous and well built garrison town. There are broad and well graded avenues lined with Lombardy poplars, roads upon which was handled the heavy artil lery, great chimnevs of stone with their ample fireplaces. Marking where stood upwards of fifty buildings, kitchen garden plats grown up to luxuriant grass, wild flowers and under brush intermingled with rose bushes which still bear their sweet blossoms, while apple, cherry, plum and pear trees are not infrequent, and still yield their fruit. And at no great dis tance lies the city of the sleeping dead, who since their comrades were driven thence. Have been undisturbed by the sunrise gun, and over whom the winds alone have chanted requiems. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Captured, he was a POW in the United States for nine months. Following his release, Wingfield had some intriguing adventures on the Upper Great Lakes before returning to England. Once home, he used his handwritten notes, kept during his time in North America, as the basis for an account of his experiences there This unique account of the history of Canada during the events of the War of 1812 and the stories of the people and places he was exposed to during this time is being made available in book form for the first time. This is the only account of the War of 1812 as seen through the eyes of a young seaman. Included is a Wingfield genealogical description that spans the modern world.
