Book excerpt: Structure is a central theme of construction, of interest to both engineers and architects; this book on architectural structures aims to facilitate the dialogue between these two professions. The chapters are organized into a progressive, step-by-step analysis of increasing complexity - a structural path - stressing an intuitive approach and conveying with diagrams and simple equations the requirements behind the dimensioning of all types of structures employed in construction. This approach is particularly useful for students, providing them with an intuitive understanding of form and function, as well as the insight to make their designs more sensible, coherent and elegant. "The art of structures" has been written for architects, civil engineers and construction professionals, and for all those need to acquire an intuitive and practical approach to the design and appropriate dimensioning of load bearing structures.

Book Synopsis Economic Prehistory by : Gregory K. Dow

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around 15,000 years ago, almost all humans lived in small mobile foraging bands. By about 5,000 years ago, the first city-states had appeared. This radical transformation in human society laid the foundations for the modern world. We use economic logic and archaeological evidence to explain six key elements in this revolution: sedentism, agriculture, inequality, warfare, cities, and states. In our approach the ultimate cause of these events was climate change. We show how shifts in climate interacted with geography to drive technological innovation and population growth. The accumulation of population at especially rich locations led to creation of group property rights over land, stratification into elite and commoner classes, and warfare over land among rival elites. This set the stage for urbanization based on manufacturing or military defense and for elite-controlled states based on taxation. Our closing chapter shows how these developments eventually resulted in contemporary global civilization.

Book Synopsis Dynamic Timing Decisions Under Uncertainty by : Nguyen M. Hung
Download or read book Dynamic Timing Decisions Under Uncertainty written by Nguyen M. Hung and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jay Forrester's Economic Dynamics was published in 1971 and The Limits to Growth by Dennis Meadows and his associates appeared a year later. The publication of those two books gave rise to twenty years of intense research into the economics of exhaustible resources, research which everywhere has had a substantial impact both on public debate and on academic curricula. And now, just as that line of research is losing steam, economists are focussing on problems associated with the degradation of the natural environment, problems which call for models which, in their formal structure, are quite similar to those already developed in resource economics. This is therefore an appropriate moment for the appearance of a thorough exposition of the economics of exhaustible resources. For that is what Nguyen Manh Hung and Nguyen Van Quyen have provided. Their splendid new book covers equally well the older Hotelling-inspired theory of cake-eating and the economics of search and R&D designed to uncover new and cheaper sources of supply. It provides an entree to the whole subject of resource economics, as well as many new discoveries which will be of interest to experienced researchers.
