Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of God: In the Jewish Apocryphal, and Apocalyptic Literature No attempt has been made in this work to classify the authors of the apocryphal and apocalyptic literature according to various religious sects, for this cannot be done with any confidence. As Dr. M. Gaster says: "The claim put up by some modern scholars to determine exactly whether a writer be longed to the Sadducees or the Pharisees rests on a very slender basis... We cannot dogmatise on these questions, which are thus far only postulates and lack scientific proof." The various books of the literature are here discussed, as far as that is possible, in their chronological order. It does not come within the scope of this work to attempt anything like a full treatment of questions of "Introduction," but it seems necessary to state briefly the reasons which have led the present writer to adopt certain critical theories as to the composition of the books under discussion and as to the dates to which they should be assigned. This has accordingly been done in a short introductory chapter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Sigvartsen seeks to examine the immense interest in life after death, and speculation about the fates awaiting both the righteous and the wicked, that proliferated in the Second Temple period. In this volume Sigvartsen explores the Apocrypha and the apocalyptic writings in the Pseudepigrapha. He identifies the numerous afterlife and resurrection beliefs and presents an analysis that enables readers to easily understand and compare the wide-ranging beliefs regarding the afterlife that these texts hold. A careful reading of these resurrection passages, including passages appearing in Sirach, Maccabees, the Sibylline Oracles and the Ezra texts, reveals that most of the distinct views on life-after-death, regardless of their complexity, show little evidence of systematic development relational to one another, and are often supported by several key passages or shared motifs from texts that later became a part of the TaNaKh. Sigvartsen also highlights the factors that may have influenced the development of so many different resurrection beliefs; including anthropology, the nature of the soul, the scope of the resurrection, the number and function of judgments, and the final destination of the righteous and the wicked. Sigvartsen's study provides a deeper understanding of how the “TaNaKh” was read by different communities during this important period, and the role it played in the development of the resurrection belief – a central article of faith in both Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Jews and Christians alike, this whole apocalyptic literature is of the utmost significance because of its claim to be "the child of prophecy". But for Christians, it has an additional importance. Not only is it, in its teaching, a continuation of the Old Testament, it is also an anticipation of the New Testament. The apocalyptic literature helps bridge the gap between the Old Testament and the New Testament and illustrates certain significant developments in religious belief, especially of an eschatalogical and messianic kind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This probe into Paul's theology argues that in his eschatological thinking there is a conceptual overlap between Jesus and God. As in several pseudepigraphical texts, there is in Paul a certain identification of the roles of God and the messianic figure. Especially in Paul's doctrines of the parousia and the final judgment this overlap features the Old Testament idea of the Day of the Lord Yahweh becoming transposed into the Day of the Lord Christ. In examining Paul's teaching on the messiah and the Kingdom, Kreitzer offers a penetrating analysis of how Paul balanced theocentricity and christocentricity within his eschatology, and how the theme of Christ's subordination to God is interjected into his doctrine.

Book excerpt: The nature and origin of Jewish mysticism is a controversial subject. This volume explores the subject by examining both the Hebrew and Aramaic tradition (Dead Sea Scrolls, 1 Enoch) and the Greek philosophical tradition (Philo) and also examines the Christian transformation of Jewish mysticism in Paul and Revelation. It provides for a nuanced treatment that differentiates different strands of thought that may be considered mystical. The Hebrew tradition is mythical in nature and concerned with various ways of being in the presence of God. The Greek tradition allows for a greater degree of unification and participation in the divine. The New Testament texts are generally closer to the Greek tradition, although Greek philosophy would have a huge effect on later Christian mysticism. The book is intended for scholars and advanced students of ancient Judaism and early Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The religion and theology of Jewish Apocryphal and Pseudepigraphic writings is here set forth in eight chapters dealing with Prophecy and Apocalyptic, The Kingdom of God in Apocalyptic Literature, The Messiah in Prophecy and Apocalyptic, The Rise and Development in Israel of the Doctrine of a Blessed Future Life, Man's Forgiveness of His Neighbor, A Study in Religious Development, Reinterpretation and Comprehension, The Literature, The Old Testament Apocrypha, The Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament. Dr. Charles will be at once remembered as the editor of the recent commentary, in two quarto volumes, on The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament, as the editor and commentator of numerous Jewish pseudepigraphic works, and as the author of the important Eschatology-Hebrew, Jewish, and Christian. He is the world's best authority on the literature of what used to be called "four centuries of silence between the Old Testament and the New." These four centuries have been revealed by modern scholarship as filled by a vigorous literary activity, the products of which are important beyond estimation in the development of religious thought from Old Testament ideas to those of the New Testament. The theological, religious, and literary evolution of that period is here set forth in topical form and in popular phraseology, encompassed in a volume that slips easily into the pocket. Praise of Dr. Charles' work is superfluous. Only one criticism is suggested-were the last two chapters made the first two a considerable gainwould result for those who approach this subject for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark McEntire continues the story begun in Portraits of a Mature God, extending his narrative beyond the conclusion of the Hebrew Bible as Israel and Israels God moved into the Hellenistic world. The narrative McEntire perceives in the apocryphal literature describes a God protecting and guiding the scattered and persecuted, a God responding to suffering in revolt, and a God disclosing mysteries, yet also hidden in the symbolism of dreams and visions. McEntire here provides a coherent and compelling account of theological perspectives in the writings of Hellenistic Judaism.
