Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Human in the Scriptures A True faith in the Scriptures must have its strength in the Scriptures themselves. This would seem to be a proposition of the clearest reason. If the Bible be the word of God with a human voice, then must it speak to the human soul directly as no other word, no other voice, can speak. Too much have we relied on outward helps. Not casting away, then, but leaving behind our Apologies for the Bible, our Philosophies of the Bible, our Reconciliations of the Bible with Science, we should come directly to the Scriptures, with the rational as well as reverent belief, that if they are divine they must contain within themselves their own strong self-evidencing power. We would say to the young man disturbed with scepticism, Read your Bible. We would say to all who have difficulties which they honestly wish removed, Study the Scriptures, meditate therein by day and by night - Nocturna versate manu, versale diurna. It is the only true and lasting cure of scepticism, whether for an individual or an age. It might be thought that there is some risk in the prescription, and doubtless it may be so with its first effects; for the difficulties and stumbling-blocks may show themselves before the deep verities have begun to arrest and amaze the soul: but let there be perseverance, and the divine medicine will reveal its power; "the sun of righteousness will at length arise with healing in its wings." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relation Between the Divine and Human Elements in Holy Scripture: Eight Lectures Preached Before the University of Oxford in the Year 1863, on the Foundation of the Late Rev. John Bampton, M.A., Canon of Salisbury The Spirit itself beareth witness with our Spirit, that we are the children of God.' introduction. - the influence of the Holy Spirit, whether before or since the Fall, not such as to supersede the free agency of man. The unfettered action of our faculties within their own sphere compatible with our dependence on the grace of God for all good. The consequent combination of a divine and human element in all our holy thoughts and works. Probability that in that purest form of spiritual influence to which we owe the Holy Scriptures the divine and human elements will both be complete. Erroneous tendencies of opposite theories, which on the one hand cause the divine to exclude the human, and on the other hand cause the human to blot out the divine. In suggesting that these may be corrected by admitting the completeness Of both elements, we make no attempt to draw a frontier line between those elements, or to define the mode of the Divine influence; but we know the avenue through which the Holy Spirit reaches us - namely, through the spirit in ourselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Inspiration of the Bible If the Bible is the Word of God; if it stands on an in finitely exalted plane, all alone; if it immeasurably tran scends all the greatest productions of human genius; then, we should naturally expect to find that it has unique cre dentials, that there are internal marks which prove it to be the handiwork of God, that there is conclusive evidence to show that its Author is superhuman, Divine. That these expectations are realized we shall now endeavor to show; that there is no reason whatever for any one to doubt the Divine inspiration of the Scriptures is the purpose of this book to demonstrate. As we examine the natural world we find innumerable proofs of the existence of a Personal Creator, and the same God who has manifested Himself thro' His works has also revealed His wisdom and will thro' His Word. The God of creation and the God of written revelation are One, and there are irrefutable arguments to show that the Almighty who made the heavens and the earth. Is also the Author of the Bible. Book excerpt: God has provided a way for all people, not just scholars, to know that the Bible is the Word of God. John Piper has devoted his life to showing us that the glory of God is object of the soul’s happiness. Now, his burden in this book is to demonstrate that this same glory is the ground of the mind’s certainty. God’s peculiar glory shines through his Word. The Spirit of God enlightens the eyes of our hearts. And in one self-authenticating sight, our minds are sure and our hearts are satisfied. Justified certainty and solid joy meet in the peculiar glory of God.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holy Scripture Verified: Or, the Divine Authority of the Bible, Confirmed By; An Appeal to Facts of Science, History, and Human Consciousness Whether the Bible is true, and worthy of all acceptation, or whether it is a wicked fabrication, and a clumsy imposture, is a question not merely nor mainly speculative, but strictly and highly practical, involving the interests, the happiness, and the obligations of all. As we believe and feel upon this question, so will our conduct be affected for good or evil; and in so far as the generations coming after us must take their education, their institutions, their habits, and their religion, from us; so far their moral and social condition, also, to an extent scarcely appreciable, will depend upon the opinions we may form upon this momentous subject. In an age when the inroads of Infidelity are feared by some, and the growth of superstition by others, it cannot be deemed unseasonable to attempt an illustration, under a somewhat new form, of the eternal and blessed verity of Holy Scripture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Plan of Revelation: An Argument From Internal Evidence in Support of the Structural Unity of the Bible; Being the Boyle Lectures for 1863 The Lectures contained in this volume were preached in 1863, - the third and last year of my office as Lecturer in the foundation of the Hon. Robert Boyle. The Lectures for 1861 were published in the same year, under the title of The Bible and its Critics, and were received in a much more favourable manner than I could have ventured to anticipate. The Lectures for 1862 dealt with The Conflict between Science and Infidelity, and were directed to prove that the principles of judgment applied by modern rationalism to the Sacred Scriptures were contradictory to the principles applied to other scientific inquiries, and were subversive of the very foundations of human knowledge. Such thought, as the claims of a lectureship held for three years and the pressure of ministerial engagements have allowed me to give to the subject since then, has confirmed me in my belief of the solidity of this view. But the treatment of the subject involved so wide a range of inquiry and so great a variety of topic that I have been anxious to give it a more thorough reconsideration than circumstances have hitherto rendered possible. The Lectures for 1863 are now printed in this volume, with slight additions and revision from the original manuscript. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible and Modern Life IT is the purpose of this book to suggest a type of Bible study fitted to the needs of modern times. Bible study to many people is a dreary business. It seems far away from the com mon vital interests of humanity. Those who have made any thoroughgoing study of the Bible, however, know that it takes hold upon the realities, the common tasks, and the deep human loyalties in which men and women live and move and have their being. Should not, therefore, the Christian Scrip tures, both through courses of study and methods of organization, be treated natu rally, scholarly, sensibly, practically, and always in relation to real life and conduct? Modern scholarship is ministering greatly to the study of the Scriptures; it is helping to make the Bible real, not by making it less divine, but more human, more intelligent, preface more capable of sustaining faith In the liv ing God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Library of Biblical and Theological Literature, Vol. 6 It is not to be thought strange that theories differed. The sub dwerences ject is one of the profoundest. It lies in the mystery OF doctrine Of the divine incarnation. The divine Son invests him self in human nature. SO far the Statement of the incarnation is easily made but the statement leaves us on the surface of the pro found reality. With a merely tactual or sympathetic union of the two natures, and consequently two distinct persons in Christ, the reality of the divine incarnation disappears. With the two distinct natures, and the two classes of divine and human facts, how can he be one person? Is the divine nature humanized, or the human nature deified in him? Or did the union of the two natures result in a third nature different from both, and so provide for the oneness of his personality? The Scriptures make no direct answer to these questions. They give us many Christological facts, but in elementary form, and leave the construction of a doctrine of the person of Christ to the resources of Christian thought.
