This book was released on 1990 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring the same practical guidelines for ridding schools of incompetent teachers as the 1984 edition, this new edition incorporates substantially revised material on three topics: criteria and information sources for evaluating teaching effectiveness, remediation procedures, and grounds for dismissal. The book presents an eight-step systematic, organizational approach to resolving several interrelated problems: (1) the legal barriers to dismissing tenured teachers for classroom incompetence; (2) the technical problems of evaluating teacher effectiveness; and (3) the human obstacles, chiefly supervisors' unwillingness to discharge teacher evaluation, remediation, and dismissal responsibilities. The eight steps are: (1) establishing teaching excellence as a high district priority; (2) adopting and publishing reasonable teacher evaluation criteria; (3) adopting sound procedures for determining whether teachers satisfy these criteria; (4) providing unsatisfactory teachers with remediation and a reasonable time to improve; (5) ensuring that appraisers have the requisite competencies; (6) providing appraisers with necessary resources; (7) holding appraisers accountable for evaluating and dealing with incompetent teachers; and (8) providing incompetent teachers with a fair hearing prior to making the dismissal decision. The final chapter recommends strategies for creating environmental conditions conducive to success. A commitment to ongoing leadership is essential. An appendix contains the District Evaluation Practices Inventory, designed to be used in conjunction with this handbook. (143 references) (MLH)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Setting the record straight about the institution of academic tenure, this book elucidates its history, legal status, and common misunderstandings. Meiners argues that the original aim of tenure—to ensure academic freedom and integrity—can still be achieved and that the belief by many professors that tenure is a guarantee of lifelong entitlement, whereby only the commission of a crime can lead to dismissal, is wrong. He contends that as long as college administrators follow the rules of their own institution, there is little to prevent universities from dismissing tenured faculty who have become incompetent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is tenure? It is a policy which gives teachers a permanent contract ensuring them a guarantee of employment like for life. Tenured teachers cannot be fired unless for just cause such as gross misconduct, or incompetence. Proponents of teacher tenure say that it is good. They argue that tenure prevents teachers from being fired for inappropriate reasons; tenure protects teachers from false accusations; tenure reduces teacher anxiety and allows them to become even better educators; properly used, tenure creates an environment where teachers are encouraged to improve; and lastly tenure protects good but veteran teachers from being fired for being too expensive. Opponents of teacher tenure say that it is bad. They argue that tenured teachers if they are ineffective are often extremely difficult to dismiss; dismissing tenured teachers takes a long time and is often extremely expensive; almost every k-12 teacher receives tenure whether they have earned it or not; and last but not least teacher tenure leads to complacency. The purpose of the book is not to further debate the pros and cons of teacher tenure. Rather it examines the critical elements to better prepare teachers for the tenure application and the tenure decision makers to make better informed evaluation. Teacher Tenure: An Analysis of the Critical Elements begins with an unlikely introduction of a story that uses rhetorical comparison of the shoe experience to connote the wisdom of the teacher tenure process.
