Book excerpt: On the basis of the presently available evidence, the following picture emerges: Quantum jumps induced by thermal phonon excitation in the near infrared disconnect water dipoles sufficiently from their surroundings to allow reorientation of these dipoles and a subsequent reorganization of their near-surroundings. In an applied electric field, these jumps can be measured as polarization spike signals in the time domain. The statistical correlation time between consecutive jumps of the same water molecule determines the relaxation time in the frequency domain. With increasing temperature the statistical average of the required activation energy moves from the intramolecular into the intermolecular region, and the effect of deuterium substitution on vibration frequency and time consequently falls. Infrared excitation and microwave relaxation spectrum are coupled in the frequency domain with opposite trends: motion of the excitation spectrum toward higher frequencies moves the relaxation spectrum toward lower frequencies and vice versa. VON Hippel and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memory of oriented dipole patterns can be imprinted into the randomized proton system of ice by the field-directed motion of Bjerrum L-, D-defects or of ionic defects, measured as polarization or antipolarization, respectively. The molecular build-up of these effects is discussed in detail. Both defect types contribute to transconduction and can be converted into each other by proton injection and ejection respectively at anode and cathode. Changes of the crystal anisotropy under mechanical stress cause tensorial drift direction changes that may produce electric quadrupole moments. Superposition of an electric field should lead to electromechanical effects. The effects of HF doping of ice, 'ohmic' electrodes, and the injection and ejection of electrons and protons at the electrodes are considered. The present report analyzes in detail the molecular mechanisms of polarization and conduction in ice single crystals. (Author).

Book excerpt: A fully automatic, low-frequency dielectric measurement system has been developed that will extend the measurement facilities of the Laboratory for Insulation Research two decades below 100 Hz. The system automatically balances, sweeps from 1 to 200 Hz while retaining balance, computes the value of loss tangent, and plots loss tangent and sample capacitance vs. frequency by means of two external recorders. Accuracy of the output plots is within 1% plus or minus 1 pf for the sample capacitance and 10% plus or minus 0.0001 for the loss tangent. Samples from 100 to 1100 pf, and 0.0002 to 0.35 loss tangent can be measured directly, while accuracy criteria determine minimum or maximum values for substitution measurements. A run from 200 to 1 Hz can be completed in about 45 minutes. (Author).

VON Hippel and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report consists of three scientific papers, the outcome of three years of experimental work on ice I(h) single crystals and its theoretical interpretation. In the first paper a short description is given of crystal growing and sample handling techniques and of equipment covering the range (10 to the 5th) to (8 x 10 to the -3rd) Hz, 0C to -180C. Rigorous control of error limits and an improved computerized evaluation procedure alloys to resolve the dielectric spectrum of ice into four significant components with very characteristic trends. The interpretation of these data requires new models developed in the second paper. The third paper supplements the a-c polarization studies by d-c and transient measurements ranging from 0.01 to 40000 V/cm, from nanoamperes to microamp. and from 100 microseconds to 3 hrs. It appears that an ideal ice crystal seems really to have no ionic charge carrier transport through its volume but a very strong one along its surfaces. Instead of a saturation current we find a small extrinsic saturation charge, extractable in high fields and giving no evidence of a special proton transfer mechanism across hydrogen bridges. Aged single-crystal samples show six clearly separated relaxation spectra. Many contradictory statements in the literature about activation energies of conduction, etc., become clarified experimentally and understood. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a research monograph summarizing recent advances related to the molecular structure of water and ice, and it is based on the latest spectroscopic data available. A special focus is given to radio- and microwave frequency regions. Within the five interconnected chapters, the author reviews the electromagnetic waves interaction with water, ice, and moist substances, discussing the microscopic mechanisms behind the dielectric responses. Well-established classic views concerning the structure of water and ice are considered along with new approaches related to atomic and molecular dynamics. Particular attention is given to nanofluidics, atmospheric science, and electrochemistry. The mathematical apparatus, based on diverse approaches employed in condensed matter physics, is widely used and allows the reader to quantitatively describe the electrodynamic response of water and ice in both bulk and confined states. This book is intended for a wide audience covering physicists, electrochemists, geophysicists, engineers, biophysicists, and general scientists who work on the electromagnetic radiation interaction with water and moist substances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on ferroelectricity and ferroelectric materials started in 1920 with the discovery by Valasek that the variation of spontaneous polarization in Rochelle salt with sign and magnitude of an applied electric field traced a complete and reproducible hysteresis loop. Activity in the field was sporadic until 1935, when Busch and co-workers announced the observation of similar behavior in potassium dihydrogen phosphate and related compounds. Progress thereafter continued at a modest level with the undertaking of some theoretical as well as further experimental studies. In 1944, von Hippel and co-workers discovered ferroelectricity in barium titanate. The technological importance of ceramic barium titanate and other perovskites led to an upsurge of interest, with many new ferroelectrics being identified in the following decade. By 1967, about 2000 papers on various aspects of ferroelectricity had been published. The bulk of this widely dispersed literature was concerned with the experimental measurement of dielectric, crystallographic, thermal, electromechanical, elastic, optical, and magnetic properties. A critical and excellently organized cpmpilation based on these data appeared in 1969 with the publica tion of Landolt-Bornstein, Volume 111/3. This superb tabulation gave instant access to the results in the literature on nearly 450 pure substances and solid solutions of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric materials. Continuing interest in ferroelectrics, spurred by the growing importance of electrooptic crystals, resulted in the publication of almost as many additional papers by the end of 1969 as had been surveyed in Landolt-Bornstein.
