Book excerpt: The bibi iograp hy includes papers in a l I fields of photosynthesis research - from stu dies of model biochemical and biophysical systems of t he photosynt hes is mechanism to primary prod ucti on studied by t he so-ca Ile d growth analysis . In addition to papers devoted enti rel y to photosynth es is, papers on other topics are inc luded if t hey con t ai n data on photosynthetic activity, photorespiration, chloroplast structure, chlo rophylland carotenoid synthesi s and destruction, eta., or if they conta in valuable methodological information (measurement of selected environmentaI factars, leaf area, eta.) . In many branches it has been difficult to defi ne th e limits of int erest for photosynthesis researchers. This problem has arisen e. g. in topics deal ing with t he transfer of gases, where - in addition to t he papers on ca rbon dioxide transfe r - so me pape rs on water vapour transfer are included, these being of general appl icat ion or bringing new approaches . On th e other hand, m any papers deal ing wit h the anatomy and phys io logy of stomata have been omitted, if the aspect of ca rbon dioxide or water vapour exchange has not been discussed.

Book excerpt: Ancient lakes are exceptional freshwater environments that have continued to exist for hundreds of thousands of years. They have long been recognized as centres of biodiversity and hotspots of evolution. During recent decades, speciation in ancient lakes has emerged as an important and exciting topic in evolutionary biology. The contributions in this volume deal with patterns and processes of biological diversification in three prominent ancient lake systems. Of these, the famous East African Great Lakes already have a strong tradition of evolutionary studies, but the two other systems have so far received much less attention. The exceptional biodiversity of the European sister lakes Ohrid and Prespa of the Balkans has long been known, but has largely been neglected in the international literature until recently. The rich biota and problems of its evolution in the two central lake systems on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, in turn, have only lately started to draw scientific attention. This volume aims at deepening the awareness of the unusual biological diversity in ancient lakes in general, and of the role of these lakes as natural laboratories for the study of speciation and diversification in particular. It should stimulate further research that will lead to a better understanding of key evolutionary processes in these lakes, and to knowledge that might help in mitigating the deterioration of their diversity in the future.

Book excerpt: The Biochemistry of Plants: A Comprehensive Treatise, Volume 8: Photosynthesis provides information pertinent to the biochemistry of photosynthesis. This book focuses on the photosynthesis of higher plants but some consideration is given to algal and bacterial photosynthesis. Organized into 11 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the excitation of a light-harvesting pigment by an absorbed light quantum. This text then discusses the evidence to support the hypothesis that chlorophyll–protein complexes are represented at the supramolecular level by some of the intramembranous particles seen on chloroplast freeze-fracture faces. Other chapters consider the absorption of light energy by accessory pigments and transferred to chlorophyll in the blue-green, red, and brown algae. This book discusses as well that certain cyanobacteria respond to the color of the incident light by altering their biliprotein composition. The final chapter deals with dark reaction of photosynthesis. This book is a valuable resource for plant biochemists, neurobiochemists, molecular biologists, senior graduate students, and research workers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade ecotoxicology has emerged as a distinct subject of interdisciplinary character. Courses in ecotoxicology reflect this and are taught by specialists in chemistry and biochemistry through to population genetics and ecology. As the first textbook to incorporate all relevant aspects of chemistry, biochemistry, toxicology, physiology, population ecology and population genetics, the first edition of this book proved to be well received across several industries. Featuring fully revised text and new illustrations, Principles of Ecotoxicology identifies the major classes of organic and inorganic pollutants, their properties, release and environmental fate, and transport in air, water and along food chains, before considering the effects that they might have upon individual organisms and ultimately whole ecosystems. This timely second edition of Principles of Ecotoxicology incorporates data collected since the first edition on subjects of current research and media interest such as organochloride pesticides, endocrine disruptors, aquatic toxicity, industrial waste and ecotoxicity testing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any concentration of a substance measured in a living or non-living system results from its distribution among all of the environmental compartments: air, water, sediments, and biota. The transfer of a substance from one compartment to another is regulated by physical forces and the chemical properties of the substance and also those of the compartments. When transfer processes are nearly constant in time, a substance will achieve predictable equilibria distributions. It is of utmost importance that students, environmental scientists, and policymakers understand the basic processes which control the distribution of a substance in order to interpret measurements obtained from within a limited number of compartments.

This book was released on 2013-11-08 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquatic systems play a salient role in the complex processes of energy and matter exchange between the geosphere and the atmosphere. For example, reactions taking place in cloud water droplets can substantially alter the atmospheric budget and chemistry of trace gases; pollution induced weathering reactions at water/soil interfaces can affect the availability of nutrients and increase the concentration of potentially toxic metals in groundwaters. Moreover, the inextricable links between the water cycle, the geosphere and the atmosphere ensure that apparently localized environmental problems have increasingly impacts in other parts of the world. To identify local-to-global scale variables associated with environmental changes, a focus must be placed on the recognition of processes, rather than a continued reliance on monitoring state variables. However, in heterogeneous aquatic systems, small scale aspects of a process under observation may not be summed directly to obtain regional estimates because of process nonlinearities with change in scale. To understand this, the integrated use of measurements across a range of scales is required.
