Book excerpt: "The arctic is a vast and unforgiving region of the planet. One might say that this region has been a small player on the global geopolitical scale. However, the 21st century has seen unprecedented annual reductions in arctic sea ice and a seemingly unwavering trend of decrease each year. Geological assessments report significant quantities of untapped natural resources. The anticipation of increased trade through the region and access to valuable resources has brought the arctic into the modern geopolitical landscape. The US and Russia have increased strategic focus in the arctic and bolstered military presence throughout the area. Although the arctic climate is trending in a milder direction, it is still a harsh and austere environment. The increased US military activity finds more aircrew members over frigid waters, uninhabited tundra, and barren ice pack. This study employs a scenario-planning framework to answer the question of how well current and near-future USAF rescue capabilities measure in response to an increased potential of personnel being isolated in the arctic. This study examines key factors of the US arctic search and rescue construct, survival capabilities, and rescue platforms to develop a basis for scenario generation. The HH-60G and new HH-60W capabilities provide results for each scenario. Examining near-future vertical lift platforms may provide insight to possible advancements in arctic rescue. The study concluded that current capabilities are adequate but the HH-60W brings no large leaps in advancement. The study supports recommendations to increase the current density of Alaskan rescue assets and the pursuit of future vertical lift aircraft to significantly decrease the risk and rescue times for any potential isolated personnel."--Abstract.
