Book excerpt: Multicultural Education of Children and Adolescents explores the foundations of diversity through cultural portraits of young people from a variety of backgrounds, and provides practical strategies for shaping and implementing a multicultural curriculum. In Part I, the authors introduce multicultural education as a concept and document the increasing cultural diversity of the United States. The text describes, in Part II, various cultural groups—including African, American Indian, and Hispanic cultures—to help pre-service teachers better understand the backgrounds of diverse learners. Part III focuses on topics that educators should consider when planning and implementing programs that teach acceptance and respect for cultural diversity. Through this series of applied chapters, teacher candidates will learn to use the most effective instructional practices with diverse learners, and to work successfully with families, school personnel, and administrators to implement a multicultural program. Content and features new to the sixth edition include the following: Every chapter opens with a real-life story that introduces the subject matter by showing the ideas in action. Points to Ponder boxes urge readers to reflect more deeply on information they have just read. Additional Case Studies with accompanying Questions for Discussion in all chapters enable nuanced consideration of the crucial differences between culturally specific learning styles. Increased emphasis on Social Justice and White Privilege, including its effects on all people. Chapter 13 has been significantly revised to include increased and updated information on sexual orientation, including transgender students. Chapters in Part II now feature further expanded sections on socioeconomic status and conditions of each ethnic group.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essential text unpacks major transformations in the study of learning and human development and provides evidence for how science can inform innovation in the design of settings, policies, practice, and research to enhance the life path, opportunity and prosperity of every child. The ideas presented provide researchers and educators with a rationale for focusing on the specific pathways and developmental patterns that may lead a specific child, with a specific family, school, and community, to prosper in school and in life. Expanding key published articles and expert commentary, the book explores a profound evolution in thinking that integrates findings from psychology with biology through sociology, education, law, and history with an emphasis on institutionalized inequities and disparate outcomes and how to address them. It points toward possible solutions through an understanding of and addressing the dynamic relations between a child and the contexts within which he or she lives, offering all researchers of human development and education a new way to understand and promote healthy development and learning for diverse, specific youth regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or history of adversity, challenge, or trauma. The book brings together scholars and practitioners from the biological/medical sciences, the social and behavioral sciences, educational science, and fields of law and social and educational policy. It provides an invaluable and unique resource for understanding the bases and status of the new science, and presents a roadmap for progress that will frame progress for at least the next decade and perhaps beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigrant children and youth are the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population, and so their prospects bear heavily on the well-being of the country. Children of Immigrants represents some of the very best and most extensive research efforts to date on the circumstances, health, and development of children in immigrant families and the delivery of health and social services to these children and their families. This book presents new, detailed analyses of more than a dozen existing datasets that constitute a large share of the national system for monitoring the health and well-being of the U.S. population. Prior to these new analyses, few of these datasets had been used to assess the circumstances of children in immigrant families. The analyses enormously expand the available knowledge about the physical and mental health status and risk behaviors, educational experiences and outcomes, and socioeconomic and demographic circumstances of first- and second-generation immigrant children, compared with children with U.S.-born parents.

Book excerpt: This book investigates the psychology of family relationships, including parent-child relations, sibling relations, maternal-foetal and marital relations. The influence of prenatal mother-child attachment on intrauterine foetal movements is examined, as well as mother-infant interaction, which was studied by looking at Nicaraguan and Italian mothers and how they engage in social play, object play, and what their overall verbal behaviours were towards their infants. In addition, rather than the usual focus on dietary and physical activity aspects of child weight management, certain family relationships are highlighted, which might either enhance or hinder coping with child weight management. Sensitivity is reflected in many different ways in maternal behaviour. This book examines maternal sensitivity and its association with child-directed speech (CDS). In addition, the changes in how parents interact with their toddler-aged children are described as they move from dyadic to family contexts. Several models depicting the role of adolescent ratings of self-esteem anxiety and/or depression, particularly in late adolescence, are also examined. This book addresses the relationships among siblings and how individual differences in emotionality at the behavioural level of analysis correlates at the cognitive and physiological levels. In addition, childhood sibling relationship quality is examined in terms of how it is correlated with achievement motivation and college GPA in young adulthood. The association between the child's personal characteristic with their relationships in family and social environments are also described. Furthermore, psychological processes affecting post-divorce paternal functioning are explored. In addition, a psycho-educational program for advancing children's coping skills and helping them to cope with marital conflict is also examined.
