Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Declaration of Independence For while the Declaration included nothing that was not familiar to every frequenter of the taverns, to every reader of the news papers and pamphlets, Jefferson yet couched this memorable paper in such powerful terms that even wavering minds could not but be fired with something of enthusiasm by its perusal. Though this remarkable summary of grievances needed no elucidation to men of that generation, it is almost meaningless to us. In but few instances do the histories covering the period lend any aid. An explanation, therefore, of the Declaration of Independence as understood by the men of the Revolution may prove of interest, especially as we are again hearing constant reference to the undying principles of that document. Passing over the philosophy of the Opening paragraph with the remark that it breathes the spirit of Locke throughout, with naught of French casuistry in it, we come immediately to the counts in the indictment against King and Parliament. They show a total of twenty-six. For seventeen of these the King alone is held accountable, while for the remainder he is made to share the responsibility with Parliament. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence The venerated emigrants who first planted America, and most of their distinguished successors who laid the founds tion of our civil liberty, have found a resting place in the peaceful grave. But the virtues which adorned both these generations; their patience in days of suffering; the courage and patriotic zeal with which they asserted their rights; and the wisdom they displayed in laying the foundations of our government; will be held in lasting remembrance. It has, indeed, been said, that the settlement of America. And the history of her revolution, are becoming a trite theme. The remark is not founded in truth. Too well does the present generation appreciate the excellence of those men, who guided the destinies of our country in days of bitter trial; too well does it estimate the glorious events, which have exalted these United States to their present ele vation, ever to be weary of the pages which shall record the virtues of the one, and the interesting character of the other. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a stunningly original look at the American Declaration of Independence, David Armitage reveals the document in a new light: through the eyes of the rest of the world. Not only did the Declaration announce the entry of the United States onto the world stage, it became the model for other countries to follow. Armitage examines the Declaration as a political, legal, and intellectual document, and is the first to treat it entirely within a broad international framework. He shows how the Declaration arose within a global moment in the late eighteenth century similar to our own. He uses over one hundred declarations of independence written since 1776 to show the influence and role the U.S. Declaration has played in creating a world of states out of a world of empires. He discusses why the framers’ language of natural rights did not resonate in Britain, how the document was interpreted in the rest of the world, whether the Declaration established a new nation or a collection of states, and where and how the Declaration has had an overt influence on independence movements—from Haiti to Vietnam, and from Venezuela to Rhodesia. Included is the text of the U.S. Declaration of Independence and sample declarations from around the world. An eye-opening list of declarations of independence since 1776 is compiled here for the first time. This unique global perspective demonstrates the singular role of the United States document as a founding statement of our modern world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Declaration of Independence: Or Notes on Lord Mahon's History of the American Declaration of Independence The English Government, it is said, engaged the services of Scott, the novelist, to write the Life of Napoleon. When it was thought that their "own "story" of the American War "would bear telling, "and ought to be told," Southey, the poet, was applied to to tell it. His other engagements compelled him to decline "the proposal made to him, so much to his "honour, by the British Government, to undertake a "History of the American War;" but he suggested the work to Lord Mahon as a fine subject, and which, treated as he would treat it, "would vindicate the "honour of this country, (England, ) at the same time "that it would render full justice to the opposite "cause." The letter of Mr. Southey, making this suggestion to Lord Mahon, is dated August 13, 1832. Twenty-two years later the "story" was told by his Lordship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Declaration of Independence an Interpretation and an Analysis It has been my endeavor to show, in the first five chapters, the close interrelation between the development of the authority and jurisdiction of the Continental Congress and the evolution of the sentiment for independence. The gradual, though occasionally rapid manner in which the Congress acquired power, and the ways in which this was exercised, went side by side with the growth of the idea that independence was a necessary outcome of the controversy between England and America, that had been raging for nearly fifteen years. As the authority and jurisdiction of the Congress were extended, it adopted various means to further the desire for independence. Also, as this desire became more widely spread, the Congress, the embodiment of the union sentiment, acting for all and in behalf of all, gained additional strength. The highest point of its power was reached on July 4, 1776. It was never again so powerful as on the day it declared independence of England. The decline of its authority dates from this time, when the first steps were taken to define the limits to its jurisdiction, by means of the Articles of Confederation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Antecedents of the Declaration of Independence It has been necessary thus to define our position in regard to this doctrine of inalienable rights in order to show clearly the attitude which we occupy in tracing the history of this and'the other doctrines contained in the Declaration. The connection between these doctrines and the works of Hooker, Hobbes, and Locke is so generally acknowledged that I shall confine my attention only to their history before the time of Hooker (1554 2 Even in the period before his time it is my intention to touch only upon such authors as state most clearly the substance of the doctrines of the Declaration, for I wish to avoid reading into many of the theories more than is really there.
