Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume looks at graduate education, specifically the doctorate, through the lens of adult education practice. Students in doctoral programs are, after all, adults. Building on principles of adult learning, the authors provide examples of academic excellence achieved through the incorporation of best practices in adult education, including: practical suggestions for democratically negotiating the curriculum, best practices for nurturing responsible action for social justice, ways of encouraging collaborative and noncompetitive learning and research, and support in shifting paradigmatic assumptions beyond the Eurocentric frame. This is the 147th volume of the Jossey Bass series New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education. Noted for its depth of coverage, it explores issues of common interest to instructors, administrators, counselors, and policymakers in a broad range of education settings, such as colleges and universities, extension programs, businesses, libraries, and museums.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Teachers Centre for Continuing Education was established to provide opportunities for teachers to undertake further study in order to upgrade their professional qualifications. The Western Australia Post Secondary Education Commission, acting on the Partridge Report on Post-Secondary Education in Western Australia, investigated recommendations that the Centre be phased out. It was suggested that a multi-campus education institution offer part-time and external courses for inservice study. Reasons for this change include: (1) declining Centre enrollment; (2) decreased need for the Centre, which was originally established when opportunity for inservice study was limited; (3) ability of existing education institutions to offer more appropriate courses; and (4) limited geographic applicability of Centre courses. The Commission recommends that the Teachers Centre for Continuing Education be phased out over a three year period. This phasing out must be well publicized. No new students are to be permitted to enroll, and all possible steps to ensure that the rights and interests of Centre staff members are preserved are to be taken. (CJ)

"Insights and practical suggestions to college educators for whom teaching students is a major part of their professional responsibility.... [Brookfield] will become to the field of education what Peter Drucker has become to management: a scholar who educates and influences practitioners in the field through incisive and challenging writing." --Canadian Journal of University Continuing Education "Readable, innovative, and perceptive. . . . The final chapters on the political realities and phenomenological truths of college teaching alone are worth the price of the book, especially for prospective, new, or veteran college, adult, or continuing education teachers." --Choice Brookfield shows new and veteran teachers how to thrive on the unpredictability and diversity of classroom life. He draws from his own teaching experience and extensive research to identify critical areas in the teacher-learner relationship--such as building trust with students and overcoming resistance to learning.

Book excerpt: This volume reviews the trends in professional continuing education, including the major players - professional associations, commercial vendors, proprietary schools, not-for-profit organizations, and more - partnerships between the academy and employers, and what makes continuing education programs successful. The professional continuing education market in the United States continues to grow. U.S. employers spent more than $51 billion annually on employee training in the 1990s. This monograph reviews the recent literature and focuses on the reasons for the huge expansion of the professional continuing education market: competitive world economies that are technology-driven; the modern citizen who has family and job demands; the constantly evolving technology that affects both work and learning; and the world of higher education that is poised to participate in the community and, in turn, generate additional revenues. This is volume 32, number 2, of the ASHE Higher Education Report, a bi-monthly journal published by Jossey-Bass. See our entire list of ASHE Higher Education Report titles for a wide variety of critical issues facing Higher Education today.
