Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This inaugural volume of a four-volume set marks the beginning of the publication of all 180 of the extant sermons composed and delivered by Emerson between the start of his ministerial career in 1826 and his final retirement from the pulpit in 1838. Edited from manuscripts in the Houghton Library, Harvard University, the sermons are presented in chronological order in a clear text approximating as nearly as possible the original version read by Emerson to his congregation. The historical introduction by David M. Robinson gives a significant appraisal of Emerson's life between 1826 and 1838 and of his absorption in and reaction against the religious culture of his time.

This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing primarily from previously unpublished manuscripts in the Ralph Waldo Emerson Memorial Association Collection in the Houghton Library at Harvard University, recent editions of Emerson's correspondence, journals and notebooks, sermons, and early lectures have provided authoritative texts that inspire readers to consider Emerson's place in American culture afresh. The two-volume Later Lectures of Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1843–1871, presents the texts of forty-eight complete and unpublished lectures delivered during the crucial middle years of Emerson's career. They offer his thoughts on New England and “Old World” history and culture, poetic theory, education, the history and uses of intellect—as well as his ideas on race relations and women's rights, subjects that sparked many debates. These final volumes contain some of Emerson's most timelessly relevant work and are sure to engage and inform any reader interested in discovering one of our country's greatest intellectuals. The following sections, although appearing only in the volume designated, contain information that pertains to both volumes and are available on the University of Georgia Press website. Volume 1: 1843–1854 contains: Preface Works Frequently Cited Historical and Textual Introduction Volume 2: 1855–1871 contains: Manuscript Sources of Emerson's Later Lectures in the Houghton Library of Harvard University Index to Works by Emerson General Index
Book Synopsis The Strains of Eloquence by : Wesley T. Mott
Download or read book The Strains of Eloquence written by Wesley T. Mott and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sermons of Ralph Waldo Emerson were central to his emergence as thinker and writer. This is the first extended study of the formative role of these long-neglected documents. Wesley Mott explores major topics and issues in Emerson scholarship: his vocational self-image; the significance and meaning of such quintessentially Emersonian concepts as self-reliance, the over-soul, and compensation; his sense of language his vision of America; his relation to Puritanism. Emerson's aphorisms, taken out of context, have enabled readers of every stamp to enlist him in their cause. Reformers, on the one hand, have claimed him as a prophet of social change, while, on the other hand, Henry Ford and Woody Hayes have found him a champion of conservative American values. These seemingly contradictory elements can be reconciled in large part by an understanding of Emerson's roots in "liberal Christianity" and of his lifelong religious habits of mind. Instead of regarding Emerson's career as a series of distinct stages (as Stephen Whicker did in Freedom and Fate), Mott emphasizes the essential continuity of his growth. David Robinson has so viewed Emerson's career as preacher and lecturer in Apostle of Culture (1982).Mott's study emphasizes the dynamics of specific sermons (mostly previously unpublished) and their role in shaping Emerson's understanding of major issues in his life of the mind. The book anticipates publication of The Complete Sermons of Ralph Waldo Emerson, to be issued by the University of Missouri Press, 1989-92.

This book was released on 1963 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ralph Waldo Emerson's life from 1826 to 1832 has a classic dramatic structure, beginning with his approbation to preach in October 1826, continuing with his courtship, his brief marriage to Ellen Tucker, and his misery after her death, and concluding with his departure from the ministry. The journals and notebooks of these years are far fewer than those in the preceding six years. Emerson noted down many ideas for sermons in his journals, but as time went on he wrote the sermons independently. Occasionally he wrote openly about family matters, but except for the passionate response to Ellen and her death the journals tell little about the impact upon him of other people and outside events. The pattern is consistent with the earlier journals: Emerson used them mainly to record his thought, to develop and express his ideas. His religious and intellectual interests were undergoing significant changes in orientation or emphasis. He was less concerned with the existence of God than with the nature and influence of Christ. He continued to reassert the truth of Christianity, but in his growing unorthodoxy he came to show less and less sympathy with the church, with forms and ritual, with convention. And he began to wonder whether it is not the worst part of the man that is the minister. During these years, Emerson read more in Madame de Sta l, Wordsworth, G rando, and Coleridge, less in Milton, the Augustans, Dugald Stewart, and Scott. In style, he moved from a rambling, bookish rhetoric to the tautness and the cadences that mark his later Essays.
