This book was released on 2011-02-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twin sisters Agnes Lewis (1843-1926) and Margaret Gibson (1843-1920) were pioneering biblical scholars who became experts in a number of ancient languages. Travelling widely in the Middle East, they made several significant discoveries, including one of the earliest manuscripts of the four gospels in Syriac, a dialect of Aramaic, the language probably spoken by Jesus himself. Originally published in the Horae Semitica series, this fascicule contains the Syriac text of an Assyrian bishop's biblical commentary. Considered by some to be the father of the Eastern Church, Isho'dad of Merv produced detailed discussions of most books of the Bible for his congregation in the ninth century. This volume, first published in 1911, is a detailed interpretation of the gospels of Luke and John, drawing from many ancient sources. Edited by Margaret Gibson, this is a valuable and informative resource for theologians by a key figure in Eastern Christianity.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Commentaries of Isho'dad of Merv, Vol. 1 of 3: Bishop of Hadatha (C. 850 A. D.); In Syriac and English In view of the loans which Isho'dad makes from earlier writers, especially Ephrem and Theodore, it would be well to have the commentaries upon the Acts and Pauline epistles published. They would not be as interesting or important as Ephrem's commentaries on the Pauline Epistles (preserved in Armenian), but they would be sure to furnish valuable matter to the student of the Syriac literary tradition. Book Synopsis The Torn Veil by : Daniel M. Gurtner
Download or read book The Torn Veil written by Daniel M. Gurtner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-12-21 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 2006 text, Daniel M. Gurtner examines the meaning of the rending of the veil at the death of Jesus in Matthew 27:51a by considering the functions of the veil in the Old Testament and its symbolism in Second Temple and Rabbinic Judaism. Gurtner incorporates these elements into a compositional exegesis of the rending text in Matthew. He concludes that the rending of the veil is an apocalyptic assertion like the opening of heaven revealing, in part, end-time images drawn from Ezekiel 37. Moreover, when the veil is torn Matthew depicts the cessation of its function, articulating the atoning role of Christ's death which gives access to God not simply in the sense of entering the Holy of Holies (as in Hebrews), but in trademark Matthean Emmanuel Christology: 'God with us'. This underscores the significance of Jesus' atoning death in the first gospel.
